19 identified through DNA tests: Minister

Indian Express14-06-2025
The identities of 19 of the 241 passengers who died on the AI 171 Dreamliner on June 12, were confirmed by matching DNA samples by Saturday afternoon, 48 hours after the crash. Of these, the body of Poornima Patel from Dakor in Kheda district was handed over to the family members and has been cremated.
Minister of State for Home Harsh Sanghavi said on X that until 9 pm Saturday, 19 DNA samples have been matched so far, confirming the identities of victims.
'State Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) unit team and National Forensic Sciences University (NFSU) team are working through the night to match more DNA samples,' he said in the post.
The samples which matched also include that of Kalpana Prajapati and Alysia Makwana, a British national from Vadodara.
The other bodies identified are of passengers from Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Gujarat, the source said.
'Both bodies will be sent to Vadodara on Sunday morning for the last rites to be conducted by the families,' Hemang Joshi, Vadodara MP, told The Indian Express.
To avoid chaos and distress to the next of kin, the Gujarat government has requested family members residing abroad to plan their arrival after sending their DNA report , a top source in the government told The Indian Express.
'We have requested the foreign nationals who have not yet arrived in Ahmedabad to send their DNA profile reports from wherever they are, as a reference sample, and we will then cross verify with the DNA profile of the sample extracted from the victim here and then they can come and collect the body, on a stipulated date. They will be given all the documents in a proper file for any future reference,' the source said.
There are at least 21 samples expected to be taken from foreign nationals whose family members died in the AI 171 crash on June 12.
Kheda District Collector Amit Prakash Yadav told The Indian Express, 'The mortal remains of Purnima Patel, one of the crash victims arrived in her hometown in Dakor in Kheda district on Saturday evening and the cremation was done with full rituals by the Swaminarayan community, which the family belongs to. The Gujarat government supported the community in arranging the final rites.' Patel was travelling to London to meet her son.
Yadav said that relatives of one crash victim from Kheda, a Canadian national, Piyush Patel (29), are on their way to submit the DNA samples. Yadav said, 'Piyush Patel's Canada-based wife and 7-year-old daughter are arriving in India to submit the daughter's sample for identification of the body.
An expert on DNA forensics and retired IPS officer Keshav Kumar said that in cases such as the Air India crash where bodies are severely charred, the DNA extracted from the molar tooth of the victim, is the best bet to match with the reference sample.
Kumar, who is consultant to the Home and Political Affairs department of the Government of Assam, recalls Rajkot's TRP game zone fire on May 25 last year which left 27 dead. 'Some parents had come to us saying our child is missing and we had used the RapidHIT technology to match DNA within 90 minutes from reference samples and exhibits'.

Hong Kong Court Delays Jimmy Lai's National Security Trial Over Health Issues

Last Updated: A Hong Kong court postponed Jimmy Lai's national security trial due to health concerns. Lai, 77, has been in solitary confinement for over 1,600 days. A Hong Kong court on Friday adjourned a national security trial hearing of media mogul Jimmy Lai due to concerns about his health after his defence said he had been experiencing heart palpitations. A pro-democracy firebrand and founder of the now-shuttered Apple Daily, Lai, showed up in court visibly thinner on Friday morning for the start of closing arguments of his landmark national security case. The 77-year-old has spent over 1,600 days in a maximum-security Hong Kong prison, much of it in solitary confinement, facing the prospect of spending the rest of his life behind bars if found guilty. Friday's hearing, which was already delayed on Thursday due to a major rainstorm, lasted roughly 15 minutes after the court heard about Lai's health conditions from his defence team. CNN quoted Lai's defence lawyer, Robert Pang SC, who told the judges that Lai had 'some episodes that he felt he was collapsing" and had been experiencing palpitations. Lai underwent a medical check-up, but prison staff have not yet provided him with medication or a Holter monitor — a device used to record heart activity — Pang said. Prosecutors said a team of medical professionals were on standby at the court on Friday to address Lai's medical needs. But judge Alex Lee adjourned the session to Monday, saying it was 'prudent" not to start until Lai's medical needs have been attended to. Jimmy Lai's son, Sebastien Lai, told CNN ahead of the hearing that he was deeply concerned about his father's deteriorating health. 'He's 77 this year, turning 78 at the end of the year, any type of incarceration is incredibly worrying for his health, never mind the solitary confinement and the diabetes," he said, calling his father's prolonged solitary confinement 'a form of torture." 'And during the summer, Hong Kong goes up to 30, almost 40 degrees, and he's in a little concrete cell, so he bakes in there. We're incredibly worried about him." The Hong Kong government said it 'strongly condemns" what it described as 'misleading statements" regarding Jimmy Lai's treatment in custody. 'The remarks by Sebastien Lai regarding Lai Chee-ying's solitary confinement are completely fact-twisting, reflecting a malicious intention to smear and attack the HKSAR Government," it said in a statement, adding Lai had requested his removal from the general prison population. Closing arguments are expected to last eight days, and it may take weeks or even months for the judges to deliver their verdict. Lai, a British national, is charged with two counts of colluding with foreign forces — an offence under Beijing's 2020 national security law that carries a maximum penalty of life imprisonment — along with a separate sedition charge. He has pleaded not guilty to all charges. view comments Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Please keep discussions respectful and constructive. Pro-Khalistan Protest Interrupts India's Independence Day Event In Melbourne

An Independence Day celebration organized by the Indian diaspora in Melbourne was disrupted by pro-Khalistan supporters on Friday. According to The Australia Today, the incident occurred outside the Indian consulate where a group of demonstrators waved Khalistan flags in response to Indians raising the national tricolour and singing patriotic songs. Videos circulating online show heated exchanges between the two groups before local authorities intervened to prevent escalation. Hindustan Times has not independently verified these videos. This protest follows a recent surge in pro-Khalistan activities in Australia. Last month, the Swaminarayan temple in Melbourne and two Asian eateries were defaced with hate graffiti, including an image of Adolf Hitler with a racist message. Around the same time, a 23-year-old Indian student in Adelaide suffered brain trauma after an assault linked to a parking dispute. In 2024, pro-Khalistan supporters also clashed with Indian cricket fans during the fourth Test match between India and Australia. Beyond Australia, Indians have faced increasing hate crimes in other countries. In Ireland, a six-year-old Indian girl was assaulted in a racially motivated attack, prompting condemnation from Irish President Michael D. Higgins and calls for strict action against offenders.

Hong Kong tycoon Jimmy Lai's security trial delayed over health concerns

Hong Kong tycoon Jimmy Lai (AP) HONG KONG: Hong Kong postponed media mogul Jimmy Lai's trial on Friday, awaiting a heart monitoring device -- the second delay this week to the democracy campaigner's case. The 77-year-old founder of the Apple Daily newspaper is charged with foreign collusion under Hong Kong's national security law, which Beijing imposed following huge and sometimes violent democracy protests in 2019. Closing arguments in the long-running trial were originally expected to begin Thursday, but all court sessions were suspended by heavy rain. As court resumed Friday, defence lawyer Robert Pang said that Lai had heart "palpitations" and experienced the feeling of "collapsing". Lai has been kept behind bars since December 2020, reportedly in solitary confinement, and concerns have previously been raised over the septuagenarian's welfare. Pang told AFP that the defence has requested Lai be excused from the closing arguments, as he is not required to speak. "(Lai) believes the episodes will occur when he is fatigued, and coming to court fatigues him," Pang said. Judge Esther Toh said Lai should not worry about disturbing the court and could always speak up if he was uncomfortable. Prison-arranged medical staff had detected "no abnormality" with Lai's heart but had nevertheless arranged for a wearable heart monitor and medication, Toh said. Judge Alex Lee said it would be "prudent" to begin proceedings on Monday after the medical arrangements were sorted. - 'The world is watching' - The sprawling trial, which began in December 2023, is entering its final stages as Western nations and rights groups continue to call for Lai's release. Aside from the foreign collusion offence -- which could land him in prison for life -- Lai is also charged with "seditious publication" related to 161 op-eds. The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) said Thursday that "the world is watching how Hong Kong treats its journalists". US President Donald Trump told a Fox News radio programme on Thursday that he had previously brought up the Lai case with Chinese President Xi Jinping. "I'm going to do everything I can to save him... you could also understand President Xi would not be exactly thrilled," the outlet quoted Trump as saying. The Hong Kong government said Wednesday it "strongly disapproved and rejected the slanderous remarks made by external forces" regarding Lai's case. Lai is a British citizen and his son Sebastien has called on the government to do more, saying: "I don't want my father to die in jail." - 'Political prisoner' - Lai has given spirited testimony over more than 50 days, fielding questions about his political ideology, management style and overseas contacts. He described himself at least twice as a "political prisoner", which drew sharp rebukes from the three-judge panel. Prosecutors showed the court a diagram titled "(Lai's) external political connections", arguing that he had exerted influence in the United States, Britain and Taiwan. Lai has denied calling for sanctions against China and Hong Kong and said he never advocated separatism. Apple Daily was forced to close in 2021 after police raids and the arrests of its senior editors. A former Apple Daily employee surnamed Chang queued outside court on Friday to support Lai, describing him as a "caring" boss. "His health worsened after he was taken into custody, but I think his spirit is strong, and I hope he can persist," Chang told AFP.
