The Ministry of Municipalities Affairs and Agriculture has successfully concluded the 'Seeds of Bahrain' campaign, a transformative initiative aimed at expanding green spaces and fostering sustainable urban development across the Kingdom.
Launched in collaboration with the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat), the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), and the National Initiative for Agricultural Development (NIAD), the campaign ran for nearly three months and left a lasting impact on communities across Bahrain.
The campaign toured 57 locations, distributing over 13,000 saplings to citizens and residents. Its mobile truck visited neighborhoods, schools, and institutions, engaging directly with communities to raise awareness about the importance of greenery and environmental responsibility.
Supporting National Goals
Eng. Sheikh Mohammed bin Ahmed Al Khalifa, Undersecretary for Municipal Affairs, highlighted the campaign's significance in advancing Bahrain's environmental goals, including the ambitious target to plant 3.6 million trees by 2035.
'The 'Seeds of Bahrain' campaign has played a pivotal role in increasing green spaces in the Kingdom, contributing to sustainable environmental solutions that leave a lasting impact on urban life and its residents,' Sheikh Mohammed stated.
Community-Driven Success
The campaign not only fostered a sense of environmental responsibility but also showcased the power of partnerships. Contributions from government entities, private sector collaborators, and civil society organizations underscored a shared commitment to building a sustainable future.
Ghadir Al-Aradi, Communications and Public Relations Officer at UN-Habitat Bahrain, expressed pride in the initiative's outcomes. 'This campaign goes beyond planting trees; it's about fostering a culture of sustainability and community engagement,' she said.
Looking Ahead
While the campaign has officially concluded, its impact will endure through the partnerships and awareness it has cultivated. Al-Aradi noted that these collaborations will drive future initiatives focused on urban afforestation, sustainability, and environmental protection.
The success of the 'Seeds of Bahrain' campaign underscores the Kingdom's dedication to its environmental commitments and sets a strong foundation for a greener, more sustainable future.

76 dead, dozens missing after migrant boat sinks off Yemen

At least 76 people have been killed and dozens are missing after a boat carrying mostly Ethiopian migrants sank off Yemen, in the latest tragedy on the perilous sea route, officials said yesterday. Yemeni security officials said 76 bodies had been recovered and 32 people rescued from the shipwreck in the Gulf of Aden. The UN's migration agency said 157 people were on board. The accident occurred off Abyan governorate in southern Yemen, a frequent destination for boats smuggling African migrants hoping to reach the wealthy Gulf states. Some of those rescued have been transferred to Yemen's Aden, near Abyan, a security official said. UN agency the International Organization for Migration earlier gave a toll of at least 68 dead. The IOM's country chief of mission, Abdusattor Esoev, told AFP that "the fate of the missing is still unknown." Despite the civil war that has ravaged Yemen since 2014, the impoverished country has remained a key transit point for irregular migration, in particular from Ethiopia which itself has been roiled by ethnic conflict. Each year, thousands brave the so-called "Eastern Route" from Djibouti to Yemen across the Red Sea, in the hope of eventually reaching oil-rich Gulf countries such as Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. The IOM recorded at least 558 deaths on the Red Sea route last year, with 462 from boat accidents. Last month, at least eight people died after smugglers forced migrants to disembark from a boat in the Red Sea, according to the UN's migration agency. The vessel that sank off Abyan was carrying mostly Ethiopian migrants, according to the province's security directorate and an IOM source. Yemeni security forces were conducting operations to recover a "significant" number of bodies, the Abyan directorate said on Sunday. On their way to the Gulf, migrants cross the Bab al-Mandab Strait, the narrow waterway at the mouth of the Red Sea that is a major route for international trade, as well as for migration and human trafficking. Once in war-torn Yemen, the Arabian Peninsula's poorest country, migrants often face other threats to their safety. The IOM says tens of thousands of migrants have become stranded in Yemen and suffer abuse and exploitation during their journeys. In April, more than 60 people were killed in a strike blamed on the United States that hit a migrant detention centre in Yemen, according to the Huthi rebels that control much of the country. The wealthy Gulf monarchies host significant populations of foreign workers from South Asia and Africa.

Israeli strikes kill 22 in Gaza

Civil defense reports deadly attacks on aid queues amid famine warnings • 8 died waiting for food aid • Famine 'now unfolding' in Gaza Gaza's civil defence agency said Israeli gunfire and air strikes killed at least 22 people yesterday, including eight who were waiting to collect food aid in the war-battered Palestinian territory. Civil defence spokesman Mahmud Bassal said that five people were killed in a strike in the southern Gaza Strip, and four more when a vehicle was hit in the central area of Deir el-Balah. Bassal said Israeli forces killed five Palestinians who were trying to return to the Gaza City area, in the territory's north, after word had spread that troops had withdrawn from there. There was no comment from the Israeli military, which told AFP it could not confirm any of the incidents without specific coordinates for each of them. The civil defence agency reported deadly fire at Palestinians who were seeking humanitarian aid, in a territory where UN-backed experts have reported that 'famine is now unfolding.' Bassal said six people were killed by Israeli gunfire while waiting near northern Gaza's Zikim crossing, through which aid trucks have entered from Israel in recent weeks. Israeli fire on a crowd near an aid distribution site in southern Gaza killed two people and wounded 70 others, the civil defence said. A Palestinian woman carries a wooden pallet as she returns from an area in which aid trucks entered Gaza. The site is run by the US- and Israeli-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), whose operations have been marred by chaotic scenes and near-daily reports of deadly incidents. The Israeli military did not comment on the latest reports, while the GHF has denied that fatal shootings have occurred in the immediate vicinity of its aid points. As Gazans face dire conditions after nearly 22 months of war, thousands have gathered each day near aid distribution points in Gaza, including the four operated by the GHF. Israeli restrictions on the entry of goods and aid into Gaza have led to severe shortages of food and essential goods, including medical supplies and fuel, which hospitals rely on to power their generators. The shortages were exacerbated by more than two months of a total blockade on aid imposed by Israel, which began easing the stoppage in late May as GHF began its operations. An Israeli defence ministry body overseeing civil affairs in the Palestinian territories, COGAT, said that more than 200 trucks of aid had been collected and distributed by the United Nations and international organisations on Thursday. Four fuel tankers for UN agencies also entered the Palestinian territory, and 43 pallets of supplies were parachuted into Gaza in cooperation with the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, and Jordan, COGAT added.

Revitalised 'Ain Umm Sha'oum' Spring in Mahooz Inaugurated

MP Ahmed Al-Saloum, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Better Life Charity Association, inaugurated the revitalised "Ain Umm Sha'oum" spring yesterday in the Mahooz area, in collaboration with the Capital Secretariat of the Ministry of Municipalities Affairs and Agriculture. Speaking at the ceremony, Al-Saloum emphasised the association's commitment to reviving the historic spring, citing its cultural significance and deep-rooted place in the collective memory of the Mahooz community and Bahraini society at large. Collaboration and Community Engagement He underscored the importance of collaboration between government institutions and civil society organisations, noting that the association's assumption of responsibility for the management and maintenance of the surrounding park represents a tangible example of effective community partnership. 'One of the core values embraced by the Better Life Charity Association since its inception is the support of economic and social well-being through meaningful community engagement,' Al-Saloum stated, adding that all efforts are carried out in coordination with the concerned authorities. A Space for Families and Children Parents and children expressed their joy over the reopening, praising the spring as a safe and welcoming space and a much-needed recreational outlet for families. The reopening coincides with the start of the summer vacation, offering a place for children to learn swimming and practice essential water skills. The project reflects ongoing efforts to preserve Bahrain's natural heritage while fostering social initiatives aimed at enhancing the local environment and the quality of family life.
