3 Killed After Vehicles Fall Into River As Bridge Collapses In Gujarat

NDTV09-07-2025
New Delhi:
Three people were killed and several vehicles fell into the Mahisagar (Mahi) River after a section of the Gambhira-Mujpur bridge in Padra taluka of Gujarat's Vadodara collapsed on Wednesday,
The bridge, which connects the Anand and Vadodara districts, gave way during peak morning traffic hours, resulting in fatalities and injuries to three others.
According to initial reports, four vehicles, including two trucks, a Bolero SUV, and a pickup van, were crossing the bridge when it suddenly crumbled.
Eyewitnesses said a loud cracking noise was heard moments before the vehicles dropped into the river. Fire brigade teams, local police, and members of the Vadodara district administration rushed to the spot and launched immediate rescue operations.
Locals also joined in, helping to extract the injured from the wreckage. So far, three people have been rescued and taken to nearby hospitals for treatment.
Padra MLA Chaitanyasinh Zala visited the site shortly after the incident.
Authorities have cordoned off the area to prevent further accidents and initiated a probe into the cause of the collapse.
Locals allege that the bridge, a key artery linking Central Gujarat to Saurashtra and vital for commuters between Anand, Vadodara, Bharuch, and Ankleshwar, had long been neglected by the administration.
"The Gambhira bridge has become notorious not just as a traffic hazard but also as a suicide point. Repeated warnings about its condition were ignored," said one resident.
Senior Congress leader Amit Chavda posted on social media: "The main Gambhira bridge connecting Anand and Vadodara districts has collapsed. Many vehicles have fallen into the river, and major casualties are feared. The administration must immediately carry out rescue operations and arrange alternate routes for traffic."
Drivers were continuing to search the river for any missing persons, and cranes had been brought in to retrieve the submerged vehicles.
More details were awaited.
A detailed technical inspection and safety audit of similar structures in the region is expected to follow.

AAP councillors meet Manish Sisodia, seek break with Cong

Chandigarh: In the backdrop of ongoing political uncertainty in the city, councillors from Aam Aadmi Party's (AAP) Chandigarh unit recently held a meeting with senior party leader and former Delhi deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia. The meeting, held a few days ago, marked the first formal interaction between Sisodia and municipal councillors since the party's controversial loss in the mayoral election earlier this year. According to party sources, the discussion revolved around several pressing issues, including the decision to elect the mayor, senior deputy mayor, and deputy mayor through show of hands rather than secret ballot, alliance with the Congress, and internal party discord. A significant number of councillors reportedly voiced their dissatisfaction with the current coalition and urged the leadership to consider contesting future elections independently. "There is growing sentiment among councillors that AAP can perform better on its own in the upcoming municipal corporation elections scheduled for December, 2026," a senior party source said, adding, "The alliance with Congress is seen as a limiting factor, especially with the Punjab assembly elections also approaching in the next year and a half." by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo The councillors emphasised that any political decision taken in Chandigarh could have ripple effects in Punjab, where AAP holds significant ground. While the final call on the alliance rests with the party's central leadership, councillors expressed the need for an early decision to allow adequate time for campaign planning and strategy. The issue of internal rifts within the Chandigarh unit also surfaced during the meeting. The councillors raised concerns over cross-voting in the January mayoral election, which led to AAP's defeat despite having a majority. They urged Sisodia to take disciplinary action against those responsible. Sources indicated that Sisodia listened to the concerns and assured that the party leadership would consider all viewpoints before making a final decision. The meeting is seen as a pivotal moment for AAP's local leadership, as it seeks to recalibrate its strategy ahead of key elections. With growing pressure from within, all eyes are now on AAP's central command to see how it navigates the alliance debate and addresses internal challenges in Chandigarh. MSID:: 122784755 413 |

Baghel's son laundered Rs 16.7 crore through shell firms: ED to court

RAIPUR: ED informed a special court that former Chhattisgarh CM Bhupesh Baghel's son Chaitanya Baghel laundered Rs 16.7 crore through shell firms and under-invoiced real estate deals tied to a Rs 2,100 crore liquor scam. Chaitanya was arrested under Prevention of Money Laundering Act on July 18 (his 38th birthday) following searches at his home. A PMLA court in Raipur granted five days' remand. Congress functionaries responded to this with a call for statewide 'Aarthik Nakabandi' on July 22. It has planned road blockades, protests, and mineral transport disruption across Chhattisgarh. The protest aligns with the final day of Chaitanya's ED custody and his scheduled production before a PMLA court. According to ED's remand report, Chaitanya played a 'central and active role' in laundering illegal proceeds from a liquor syndicate that allegedly manipulated Chhattisgarh's excise system from 2019 to 2022. One transaction flagged involved Rs 5 crore funnelled from Saheli Jewellers into a project, Vitthal Green, by Baghel Developers. While project costs were officially declared as Rs 7.14 crore, ED estimates actual expenditure between Rs 13 crore and Rs 15 crore — mostly in cash. Key witness Pappu Bansal told ED that only Rs 2.62 crore was recorded in payments to the contractor, while Rs 4.2 crore was allegedly paid off the books. On Oct 19, 2020, liquor businessman Trilok Singh Dhillon allegedly paid Rs 5 crore for 19 flats in the same project under employee names. CM Vishnu Deo Sai defended ED's actions. 'ED doesn't act randomly. It knows what it's doing,' he said Saturday. While ex-CM Baghel accused the Centre of vendetta politics. 'They raided me during Budget session. Now, after Mahant's adjournment notice on Hasdeo forest felling, they've targeted my son,' he said. 'I won't break. Let them jail him — he's strong.' Baghel alleged a 'selective pattern' of enforcement: 'Nothing happens to Himanta Biswa Sarma, or Suvendu Adhikari, or Ajit Pawar. Those who bow walk free.' Ex-CM's son arrested to bury the truth, crush people's voice, says Priyanka Congress' Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Saturday claimed that as former Chhattisgarh CM Bhupesh Baghel was about to raise the issue of govt 'gifting' all the state's forests to industrialist Adani in the assembly, govt arrested his son to pressure him to bury the truth. The public has understood that these tactics under BJP are aimed at crushing the voice of people but it will not succeed, she said. 'The forests are being destroyed in defiance of PESA Act and NGT directives. Baghel was going to raise the issue in the assembly. To stop him, ED raided his house early in the morning and arrested his son. In past 11 years, the country has understood well that these are methods to suppress opposition. But every Congress worker stands firmly with Baghel,' Priyanka said.

Hry releases 27 Bengal workers, 3 still in detention

1 2 Kolkata: As many as 27 of 30 Bengali migrant workers, held by Surajkund police in Faridabad since July 15, have been released, Trinamool Congress MP and chairman of West Bengal Migrant Workers' Welfare Board Samirul Islam said on Saturday. While they were released in a phased manner, three still remain in detention. All of them worked as ragpickers and hail from Nadia. On July 16, CM Mamata Banerjee walked from College Square to Esplanade to protest the detentions of Bengali migrants in different parts of the country. She claimed that the Centre "issued a secret notification in Feb to detain and arrest anyone speaking in Bengali in case of any suspicion". Calling it "super-Emergency", Banerjee also signalled that the state administration would legally challenge the detentions of Bengali-speaking migrant workers. Highlighting the continuing harassment of Bengali-speaking workers in BJP-governed states like Odisha, Assam, and Delhi, Islam added that even members of the Matua community and Rajbanshis were being detained and arrested. "The same thing happened in BJP-governed Maharashtra too. In Pune, Matuas were detained on suspicion of being Bangladeshi nationals. Shockingly, BJP MP and junior Union minister Shantanu Thakur, himself a Matua, is silent on the issue," he said. Mamata Bala Thakur, TMC's RS MP and a Matua leader , on Saturday visited the houses of some of the detained Matuas living in Bongaon to assure them that the state govt was taking all steps to ensure their early release.
