New London School Explosion survivor relives the tragic day on the 88th anniversary
The event remains the third-deadliest disaster in the history of Texas, killing 294 people. Among the dead were mostly children from grades 5th-12th. Dozens of people who lost someone in the explosion gathered at the Cenotaph on Tuesday afternoon to remember those who were killed.
Betty Daniels Smith, 99, was in 7th grade when the explosion happened. She was on the tennis court preparing for a county meet, now known as UIL. Her heart is still heavy thinking back to that fateful day.
'I walked in the front door, my mother saw I was upset. She said, 'What's wrong'? I said the school blew up mama and she said, 'What;? 'I said, the school blew up, and I must have been a fibber because she said,' 'Betty, don't say things like that'. 'I said, it did,' said Smith
West Rusk ISD students laid flowers in honor of each student that passed away, and a local pastor spoke words of comfort and encouragement.
Every year the taps play at 3:17pm, the same time the explosion happened.
The London Museum & Café opened their doors after the ceremony for people to learn about their tragic history.
Board member Jerry Poole said that the community did not talk about the destruction or memorialize loved ones lost until the 70's.
'It was so impressive in people's minds, you know, that it was just so terrible, you know, people didn't want to mention it or think about it,' Poole said.
Poole said the best way for the small community to heal is to talk about what happened and keep the nearly 300 people's memories alive.
The explosion was worldwide. President Roosevelt and Adolf Hitler sent letters to the grieving community.
The tragedy is what eventually led to chemicals being added to natural gas, creating the rotten smell to act as a warning to others.

Fire crews put out heath fire started 'deliberately'
Firefighters have put out a wildfire at a nature reserve which is believed to have been started deliberately. The fire near Blackhill Road, on Holton Heath near Poole, broke out shortly before 18:00 BST on Thursday and has destroyed about 1.8 hectares (about 4.5 acres) of heath and scrubland. At its height 40 firefighters were on scene and a total of 18 different appliances, two Unimog trucks and 10 support vehicles were used to tackle the blaze found to be deep within the peat on the heath. Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service (DWFRS) said the fire was now out and crews had left the scene. The service said a reinspection was due later on Saturday. DWFRS said crews found fires in multiple places on areas of the heath. The fire service said: "The cause is believed to be deliberate, and we are working closely with our colleagues at Dorset Police." An amber warning of a rising risk of wildfires is in place. The alert covers Dorset and Wiltshire. One of Dorset's national nature reserves, the area of heath is owned by Natural England and spans 117 hectares (289 acres) of woodland and lowland heath. The reserve's compact bushes provide nest sites for Dartford warblers and stonechats - its areas of bare sands are home to burrowing bees and wasps, and egg-laying sand lizards. On Tuesday evening a wildfire took hold of an area of Turbary Heath in Bournemouth. Fire investigators later said the nature reserve fire was being treated as arson and police were investigating. Tyler City Council approves resolution to add new path connecting parts of the city
TYLER, Texas (KETK) — The Tyler City Council approved a resolution on Wednesday in support of a grant used to build a share use path that will connect Downtown Tyler, hospitals and Tyler Junior College. Anderson County flooding calls for water rescues and closed roads The Midtown to Downtown Shared Use Path is aimed to be a two and a half mile, 10 foot-wide path that would connect popular Tyler destinations such as Downtown Tyler, the new Smith County Courthouse and UT Tyler School of Medicine. This path would be an accessible way for Tylerites to travel on foot from East Fifth Street to South Broadway Avenue. Safety standards for the path include access ramps, lighting, wide concreate trails, signalized intersections and more. Though the path has an estimated $4.8 million price tag, the city expects to qualify for Transportation Development Credits which would completely fund the project through grants instead of a local match. Applications will open to help Tyler residents find a home
TYLER, Texas (KETK) — Neighborhood Services will reopen its Housing Choice Voucher Program later this month to help Tyler residents find safe and affordable housing. First Baptist Church of Timpson damaged during severe weather The Housing Choice Voucher Program is a way for the federal government to help low-income families, older adults and disabled people find nice homes at a fair price. Those who are accepted can use the assistance to lease single family homes, apartments and townhomes. Applications will be entirely online from June 24 at 7 a.m. to June 26 at 6 p.m. and those without internet access can use the computers at the Rose Garden Center from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tyler Parks and Recreation along with Neighborhood Services will offer support during the application period. According to the City of Tyler, 2,000 applicants will be selected at random by a computer with honorably discharged veterans, elderly and disabled people receiving priority. Those wanting to apply will need to use or create an email address and help can be requested through 903-531-1303. Status updates on applications will be available starting on June 30.
