EVANS, Ga (WJBF) – Local first responders gave people the chance to learn how they keep their community safe.
Hundreds were at the fair Saturday morning to meet with emergency workers and learn more about what they do.
This is the 3rd year of the Public Safety and Preparedness Fair, and dozens of organizations were there.
Shepeard Blood Center, The Red Cross, The Gold Cross, AU Air Care and more were able to give the public a glimpse into what they do every day.
'Even Georgia Power, the Corps of Engineers, everybody is here, everybody that serves the public is here to showcase what they do for the public.' said Danny Kuhlmann, Operations Chief of Columbia County Fire Rescue.
There was live music, carnival rides, food trucks a rock wall and more at the festival.
Kids were able to get inside the emergency vehicles, explore a dive boat, and learn more about the equipment our first responders use on a daily basis.
Kuhlmann says members of the community were showing sympathy for the events that occurred this weekend killing Deputy Brandon Sikes and injuring Deputy Gavin White.
'I was by the sheriff's office tents and they were getting a lot of condolences from the public.' said Kuhlmann.
The event was free to the public and is always one for the whole family to enjoy.
'Kids are a big part of who we like to talk to, everybody gives them toys and swag and stuff to carry around and they like that.' Kuhlmann said.
Organizers say while the events of last week are heavy on everyone's minds, this event was meant to uplift the community and show their support for our local heroes.

Aiken fire survivor once lost his legs, now his home

AIKEN, S.C. (WJBF) — A sanitation worker who lost his legs in an accident in Aiken County two years ago now faces a new battle after a housefire destroyed his home. 'I start hearing pops. I kid you not, sound like gunshots pop bang pop,' Matthew Lex recalled. The fire at Matthew's home on Friday, June 6 spread fast. Windows shattered. What sounded like explosions followed. Inside—Matthew, an amputee, fighting to get out. 'I threw my legs off,' he said. I took because my leg was half off. I threw this leg up and I bolted for the back door. The time I got out there, the battery exploded. It sounded like a train locomotive exploded.' 'He was here going down the hill,' neighbor Charlie Stokes Jr. said. 'And we just basically told him he didn't need to go any further, that we would get him, you know, where he needs to be as far as to safety and everything.' Smoke, flames, and water wrecked everything. Matthew's safe space — gone. His wheelchairs and medical gear — destroyed. 'You can see the damage, and this is a picture of our family in Myrtle Beach when my husband and I melted,' his mother Cheryl Welsh showed Shawn. 'And you can see it's melted. So, a lot of memories, a lot of pain in this room because we came here and we watched a lot of movies and spent quality time together. So, this is a very surreal situation. It's painful.' Matthew says the 911 dispatcher was confused—and it took nearly 40 minutes to get help. His family wants to know why the closest fire station did not respond. 'I always have had a concern because even when Matthew was injured in his accident, I'm concerned about Aiken and their timeliness to some of these,' Cheryl added. They're staying with relatives for now but say Matthew's wheelchair makes it tough. They need a more accessible home — and answers. 'It doesn't matter about a district at that time. It matters about life and the sanctity of life and whatever it takes to save lives,' she said. 'We've been through a lot — pinned between a Dodge Caravan, the garbage truck, escaping a burning house. You gotta be brave,' Matthew added. A Go-fund-me has been set up to help the family. You can donate, here. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Local bikers looking for answers from the Richmond County Sheriff's Office after one of their own was severely injured in a hit-and-run

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WJBF) – Family and friends say they want justice for 27-year-old Morgan Gray. Gray was injured in a hit-and-run on her motorcycle on May 28th. She's in critical condition here at Doctors Hospital. And her loved ones say someone needs to be held accountable. The accident occurred just before 9 pm at the intersection of Wheeler Road and Frontage Road. Since this incident, bikers have been coming and forming a prayer circle in front of her window at the Hospital. 'We're Morgan Strong all day,' said Dalton Taylor, a Friend of Morgan. 'This little girl shouldn't be going through this all because of a hit and run. So, it's just pretty much just trying to get peace, get justice.' Summer Ivey, Morgan's cousin, has been working to obtain information from the Richmond County Sheriff's Office about the investigation but told me she feels she is getting the bare minimum from them. 'We've asked for updates. We've called, no reply,' said Summer Ivey, Morgans's Cousin. 'We've posted on social media. We've been loud. We've been doing prayer circles, just trying to be there for her. Her son needs her; her family needs her. Her friends, obviously, and we're just steadily going to fight.' The Sheriff's Office located the vehicle and its owner. The vehicle was a company vehicle. They are collecting evidence about the driver but are unable to say anything at this time. 'We have our suspicions, but there's a protocol that we follow,' said Major Robbie Silas, Special Operations Richmond County Sheriff's Office. 'I have a great team that is working tirelessly, you know, around the clock, trying to find the driver of this vehicle. Again, like I said, we are collecting evidence. The vehicle has been processed, and once we get all that, and we'll run that to the DA's office and let them see all the stuff that we have, and then we'll make those charges.' While they continue to seek answers about what happened and who is responsible, they have this solution to keep drivers on both four- and two-wheels safe. 'Regardless of what the situation is. We're on two wheels. Pay attention,' said Taylor. They have a GoFundMe for Morgan Grey. They are also hosting a fundraiser on Saturday, June 21st, at Street & Trail Motorsports from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
