Bishop Condemns Anti-Migrant Violence in Spain's Murcia
In his statement , published by Vatican News, the bishop stressed that violence is 'not a solution,' emphasizing that the situation contributes to a 'deeper sense of fear and unease.'
A large wave of Islamophobic attacks, xenophobia, and anti-migrant sentiment has been ongoing in Spain since Friday last week following the assault of a 68-year-old Spaniard.
Converging reports claimed three youths of North African origin had beaten him up, but an ongoing investigation has yet to determine the circumstances of the case.
Reports have confirmed arrests made by authorities, including 11 people apprehended for their involvement in the assault as well as anti-migrants riots.
Despite swirling rumors on social media and within far-right groups, the majority of those arrested are of Spanish origin.
Since the assault on the retiree, far-right groups launched violence targeting migrants and Muslims, calling for a manhunt of 'Maghrebis' or those coming from North Africa.
Many have condemned the anti-migrant and Islamophobic acts, but others have been fueling tensions and blaming Moroccans for the attacks.
Bishop Lorca Planes responded to the violence, urging all residents to avoid 'any form of extremism' and to offer peace, love, and forgiveness.
According to reports, nearly one-third of Torre Pacheco's population is of foreign origin, with many contributing to Spain's socio-economic development, particularly in agriculture and other sectors.
Earlier this week, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez condemned the wave of racism and Islamophobic attacks against migrants and Muslims.
'Racism is incompatible with democracy,' he said, noting that Spain is a country of rights, not of hate.
The Moroccan consulate in Murcia also responded to the anti-migrant violence, particularly against Moroccans living in the region.
'We express our unconditional support to those affected and affirm our commitment to preserving their moral and physical integrity,' the consulate said, noting that it is constantly in contact with Spanish authorities to ensure all necessary security guarantees are provided to Moroccans. Moroccans rally in Rabat in support of Palestine and to protest the starvation of Gazans
In a powerful display of solidarity, Rabat, the capital of Morocco, became the epicenter of a massive national march organized by the «Moroccan Front for Supporting Palestine and Against Normalization». Thousands turned out to voice their support for the Palestinian people in Gaza and to denounce the severe policies of starvation and siege imposed by the Zionist occupation. This demonstration was a direct response to the Palestinian resistance's call for a global movement to address the dire situation faced by the besieged residents of the Gaza Strip, who suffer under a brutal collective starvation policy. From the early morning hours, thousands of Moroccans gathered in Rabat, with significant representation from political party leaders, political organizations, human rights groups, and trade union representatives. The Justice and Charity Group. Al Adl wal Ihsane, was notably prominent in the march. The «Moroccan Front for Supporting Palestine and Against Normalization» emphasized in a statement that this national march is driven by «our humanitarian duty and historical responsibility as a people and activists to confront the crime of starvation and genocide». The march also seeks to «participate in the global movement on Sunday against starvation in Gaza» and to «condemn the genocide committed by the Zionist occupation against the Palestinian people, amid the silence and complicity of the international community». The statement further highlighted that «the systematic starvation inflicted by the occupation's machinery on more than one and a half million civilians in Gaza, particularly in its northern regions, through the destruction of infrastructure, food storage, and the prevention of aid, is a genocidal weapon aimed at crushing the will to resist and forcing surrender upon a people committed to resistance until liberation». The front vehemently condemned «the crime of international silence and Arab inaction in stopping this heinous crime», urging the Moroccan people to continue their mobilization and struggle in support of Palestine and its courageous resistance.

Spanish authorities intercept 28,000 smuggled cigarettes from Morocco at Algeciras port
The Spanish Civil Guard and customs authorities at the Port of Algeciras have foiled two attempts to smuggle large quantities of cigarettes from Morocco, according to Spanish media reports. In two separate operations carried out on July 13, customs officers and surveillance units seized a total of 28,000 undeclared packs of cigarettes hidden inside vehicles arriving from Morocco. The individuals involved, along with the seized goods and official reports, have been referred to the Algeciras Primary Court. The first bust took place during a routine inspection in the vehicle control area for arrivals from Tangier. Officers became suspicious after noticing the nervous behavior of a semi-trailer truck driver. A thorough search revealed 3,000 packs of cigarettes concealed in the trailer. The driver was cited for an administrative offense related to smuggling. The second operation led to the arrest of two individuals after a refrigerated truck, sealed upon departure, showed signs of tampering during transit. Upon inspection, authorities uncovered 25,000 additional packs hidden inside. In total, 28,000 cigarette packs were confiscated, with an estimated value of over €140,000.

World Cup 2030: Akhannouch Calls It ‘Strategic Transformation Accelerator'
Marrakech – Head of Government Aziz Akhannouch stated Friday that Morocco's co-hosting of the 2030 FIFA World Cup alongside Spain and Portugal represents far more than a global sporting event – it serves as a 'strategic transformation accelerator' for the North African country. Speaking via video address at the 8th Morocco Today Forum (MTF) in Rabat, the country's executive leader outlined the tournament's transformative potential. 'It's an opportunity to realize, at all levels, the Royal Will to consolidate the foundations of a dynamic, inclusive and sovereign Morocco,' he said. The forum, held under the patronage of King Mohammed VI, centered on the theme 'Vision of a King – Morocco 2030: Consolidating the Foundations of a Great Nation.' Akhannouch mentioned numerous projects either completed or underway throughout the country. These include internationally-compliant infrastructure, high-speed rail networks, major airport hubs, highways, urban ring roads, and tourism and hospital infrastructure. He added that Morocco's partners, including global leaders in their respective sectors and national businesses, are engaging with opportunities created by the country's openness to cutting-edge industries, clean energy, telecommunications, digitalization and other promising sectors. 'In many sectors, Morocco is moving toward becoming a continental, regional, and even international reference,' he continued. 'The organization of the 2030 World Cup will come to consolidate and accelerate this metamorphosis of Morocco under the enlightened leadership of King Mohammed VI,' Akhannouch asserted. The prime minister noted that sporting infrastructure is experiencing considerable development to meet top international standards. These facilities are designed not only to host major international sporting events but also to drive growth and social cohesion across multiple cities. He pointed out that the hotel sector is undergoing profound overhaul, supported by unprecedented growth in demand for Morocco as a destination, with a record 17.4 million tourists in 2024. 'It's about embodying tomorrow's Morocco' In his contribution to the forum, Youssef Amrani, Morocco's Ambassador to the United States, framed the 2030 World Cup as more than a privilege – it's 'a moral contract with oneself and with the world.' 'It's not about building a few stadiums or developing infrastructure. It's about embodying tomorrow's Morocco,' Amrani said. 'A horizon cannot be decreed. It must be prepared for, anticipated, and earned.' The MTF 2025 is structured around three key panels: placing human capital at the heart of development, accelerating sustainable and inclusive economic growth, and building a resilient 'Digital Nation.' Mohammed Haitami, president of Le Matin Group which organizes the forum, clarified that this prestigious global sporting event is not merely about hosting twenty football matches but driving a national leap forward. 'It's a unique opportunity to mobilize the country around a structuring project, to modernize our infrastructure, to converge our efforts toward the same goal,' Haitami explained. The planned investment approaches MAD 500 billion ($50 billion). The event is gathering national and international decision-makers, researchers, and key figures from the sports, economic, digital, and media sectors. High-level participation includes the Head of Government, six ministers, and Fouzi Lekjaa, president of the 2030 World Cup Committee, alongside Miguel Ángel Moratinos, former Spanish minister and current UN High Representative for the Alliance of Civilizations. Based on projections from FIFA and macroeconomic analyses cited by Ambassador Amrani, the World Cup could generate a direct and indirect impact equivalent to 4% of Morocco's GDP through investment, employment, tourism, and global image enhancement. Since its inception in 2016, the MTF has established itself as a space for strategic reflection aligned with the Royal Vision. Each edition produces a White Paper submitted to decision-makers as a contribution to national development strategy.
