Andrew Castle's commentary 'dampens' BBC Wimbledon record as fans demand he's removed

The BBC has released viewing figures for the 2025 Wimbledon Championships, which saw Jannik Sinner and Iga Świątek claim the men's and women's singles titles respectively
Jannik Sinner's remarkable triumph over Carlos Alcaraz in the men's singles final at Wimbledon was viewed by a whopping 8.8 million spectators, according to figures released by the BBC.

The majority of this audience, some 8.3 million, tuned in via BBC One, marking a significant increase from last year's viewership of 7.5 million. Sinner secured his inaugural Wimbledon title following an enthralling four-set contest, one of many highlights during the BBC's fortnight of coverage.

In the women's singles final, Iga Świątek clinched her first Wimbledon title with a commanding straight sets victory over Amanda Anisimova, drawing a peak audience of 4.1 million on BBC One. The match was also streamed over one million times on BBC iPlayer and the BBC Sport website and app.

However, while Świątek's win was certainly noteworthy, British sensation Emma Raducanu proved to be the bigger draw for TV audiences, reports the Mirror.
Her Centre Court showdown with Aryna Sabalenka pulled in a peak TV viewership of five million – the third highest for a non-final match in the past four years.
These numbers were only surpassed by Raducanu's own fourth-round nail-biter against Lulu Sun in 2024 and Andy Murray's clash with John Isner in 2022.

The BBC also announced that it achieved its largest ever overall audience for a Wimbledon tournament, with a record-breaking 69.3 million accessing coverage across BBC iPlayer, the BBC Sport website, and BBC Sport app throughout the championship's two-week duration.
The figures soared past the 50.1 million online requests made in 2024, and also eclipsed the previous high of 54.3 million online requests recorded in 2023.

Alex Kay-Jelski, Director of BBC Sport, remarked: "This year's record-breaking digital figures for Wimbledon are testament to the huge appeal of the sport amongst audiences and the power of digital innovation to bring both new and existing fans closer to the action than ever before.
"The way people are following Wimbledon is changing but that is exciting for us as we look to tell the best stories in different ways".
Despite these impressive numbers, the BBC has faced pressure on social media platforms to remove a member of its commentary team.

Andrew Castle, long associated with the broadcaster's Wimbledon coverage, was selected to commentate the men's singles final between Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz on Sunday, a decision that did not sit well with some viewers.
"Why oh why do the BBC put Andrew Castle on lead commentary for the Men's Singles final every year, he's terrible. My ears have already start to bleed," one viewer complained.

Another lamented: "Massive build up to this #WimbledonFinal and then BBC put Andrew Castle on commentary. Way to kill the match for me before it even starts."
"Wow Andrew Castle is so bad he is already trending internationally," observed one viewer. "Heart sinks when I hear the words '... and your commentator is Andrew Castle'. Ruins enjoyment of every match. @BBCSport needs to cut the chord," remarked another.

Castle's role at Wimbledon has sparked debate previously, especially following Andre Agassi's guest appearance on the BBC's commentary panel during the semi-final showdown between Alcaraz and Taylor Fritz.
Agassi's involvement triggered a wave of enthusiastic responses from audiences, with many appearing to favour his analysis over Castle's contributions.
Whether any changes are being considered for next year's broadcasting line-up is yet to be revealed, though.

Mikel Arteta finally got his way after being overruled on £52m Arsenal signing

You certainly can't accuse Arsenal of being inactive in the window this summer, but whether the new signings and potential new recruits will be enough to power the Gunners to the title remains to be seen. The naysayers will point to Liverpool's already impressive summer, which has seen Arne Slot add two top class full-backs and smash the British transfer record to snare Florian Wirtz. Building from a position of strength, the best are getting even better, even without the arrival of a new centre forward, an issue that looks likely to be addressed imminently. Arsenal, however, can only look after themselves and while it might have been tempting to enter the race to sign Alexander Isak, plugging the gaping holes in their squad, exposed by last season's injury crisis, represents a far smarter use of the considerable funds that have again been made available to Mikel Arteta. Of the new additions, Martin Zubimendi's is perhaps the most intriguing. Will the addition of a genuine deep-lying playmaker, one in the prime of his career, prompt a more expansive style of play? If the Spaniard's addition shifts Arsenal back towards a side somewhere between the buccaneering nearly-men of two years ago and the overcautious, safety first unit that lost their way last term then there is no reason to suggest they cannot last the distance. The rest of the signings represent gambles, while even Eberechi Eze and Rodrygo, although level raisers, would come with no guarantees given it is not clear where the Crystal Palace playmaker would fit in, while there have been plenty of Real Madrid cast offs who have failed to shine in the Premier League. That said, this is a top class Arsenal side whose consistency over the last three years is often overlooked as a consequence of their lack of silverware. The new signings may only need to contribute the extra 10% required to get the Gunners over the line given the quality that Arteta already has at his disposal. If you're looking for a positive omen, cast your minds back to the summer of 2001 when Arsenal brought in Richard Wright, Francis Jeffers, Giovanni van Bronckhorst and Sol Campbell at significant cost, while Edu was effectively a new signing given he hardly played following his arrival in January. Of that group, only Campbell could have been considered a genuine game changer, but that group all made valuable contributions across a campaign which saw Arsenal end a run of three second place finishes to complete a Premier League and FA Cup double under Arsene Wenger. How much will Daniel Dubois and Oleksandr Usyk earn from fight?

The two heavyweight stars are set to earn millions once again ahead of their mouthwatering heavyweight showdown at Wembley this evening Daniel Dubois and Oleksandr Usyk will earn millions from their mouthwatering undisputed heavyweight title fight. ‌ More than 90,000 fans are expected to be in attendance for the historic rematch. The two stars first met back in 2023 - with Usyk going on to score a vicious knockout in the ninth round. However, their fight was not without drama. In the fifth round, the Ukrainian was sent crashing to the canvas with what many believed was a shot to the body. ‌ It was eventually ruled a low blow - much to the frustration of Dubois - and it allowed Usyk to take a few minutes to recover fully. In their initial encounter, the Brit reportedly took home around £1.5million, while Usyk pocketed £4.4m. Needless to say both men will be earning much more for their display in the rematch. ‌ After suffering the second defeat of his professional career to Usyk two years ago, Dubois has been on an absolute tear - defeating Jarrell Miller and Filip Hrgovic. 'Triple D' comes into the showdown off the back of a brutal knockout victory over Anthony Joshua last September. Despite the current run of form, the 27-year-old has constantly faced accusations of being a 'quitter' after taking a knee against Joe Joyce and failing to beat the count against Usyk. Usyk's team are confident that Dubois will struggle once again come fight night. "It is the same guy. What can he change in a couple of years? You cannot train your mind and that is what I think his weaknesses are," said the Ukrainian's manager Egis Klimas Dubois' promoter Frank Warren hit back at the comments. "We will see on Saturday," he said. ‌ "He certainly trained his mind against (Jarrell) Miller, he certainly trained his mind against (Filip) Hrgovic and he certainly trained his mind against 'AJ'... in a big way. And he has got better and better and he has shown his power. His power, I mean he knows he can hurt Mr Usyk. He knows that. He has felt the power and he is a much better fighter from two and a half years ago." Throughout the pre-fight press conference on Thursday afternoon, both men remained calm and barely traded verbal jabs. But asked about his advancing years, Usyk said: "I respect this guy, this young guy. I'm not an old guy, 38 is not old. We will see Saturday." As for Dubois, the British star is looking to become Britain's first undisputed heavyweight champion since Lennox Lewis in 1999. "He's making the mistake of believing I'm still the same boy he beat in our first fight two and a half years ago. Wrong. I'm in my prime now," he said. "Right now, I just want to get it on. I'm going to write my own script. I'm going to win these belts. I'm going to be the man." When is Oleksandr Usyk vs Daniel Dubois? The rematch between Usyk and Dubois is scheduled to take place tonight at Wembley Stadium. The fight will be exclusively broadcast live on DAZN PPV. The entire fight card for the night can be accessed live on DAZN PPV, priced at £24.99 in the UK; $59.99 in the US; and $19.99/equivalent in ROW. The DAZN coverage is set to kick off around 5:30pm BST (12.30pm ET / 9.30am PT), with the first undercard fight expected to start at approximately 5.40pm BST (12.40pm ET / 9.40am PT). Usyk and Dubois are anticipated to make their ringwalks at 9:45pm BST (4:45pm ET / 1:45pm PT).

Shocking Lions incident that had fans calling for Maro Itoje to be banned

Marjson Itoje will skipper the British and Irish Lions against Australia, and the lock will be desperate to ensure he keeps his cool in Brisbane following previous calls for him to be banned Maro Itoje will take the reins as British and Irish Lions captain for Saturday's Test opener against Australia, marking the start of their summer campaign. He's expected to lead by example as the squad eyes an early series advantage. ‌ Having stumbled against Argentina in Dublin prior to their trip, the Lions have since gone unbeaten in five matches on Australian ground. But things will heat up in Brisbane, where Itoje faces scrutiny both for his conduct and his impact. ‌ That's partly due to past controversy. During the 2021 South Africa tour, the Saracens lock drew heavy criticism after a high-profile clash with Damian de Allende, with the 30-year-old becoming the focus of outrage from Springboks fans and South African media outlets for his in-game antics. ‌ He was seen pressing his knee onto De Allende's upper body - specifically around the chest, shoulder, and neck - during the second Test in Cape Town. That match ended 27-9 in South Africa's favour, tying the series before the decider. De Allende retaliated from the ground by dragging Itoje down and then shoving him in the head. Itoje responded by complaining to referee Ben O'Keeffe. Although no action was taken against either, the online backlash was severe. One fan posted to X: "[Maro Itoje] should be banned after his knee on De Allende's neck! That's dangerous." Another user said: "Itoje also deserved red for this. This is intentional." ‌ "Shocked he wasn't thrown out of the game," another comment read. One supporter wrote: "Unacceptable! Maro had a terrible game overall, actually. Complaining and moaning." Itoje, though, seems to have turned the page. His recent form suggests he's grown into the leadership role, becoming a consistent presence throughout the preparatory fixtures. He was on the scoresheet in the Lions' 52-12 rout of the Queensland Reds, showcasing endurance and focus throughout the match. Australia, led by ex-Ireland coach Joe Schmidt, will likely make Itoje a priority target as they seek to disrupt the Lions' plans at Lang Park. Itoje is set to line up in the second row alongside Joe McCarthy and is one of four Englishmen in the starting side, joined by Ellis Genge, Tom Curry, and Tommy Freeman. But more than anything, Itoje must avoid the sort of confrontations that invite disciplinary trouble. With the captain's armband now on his arm, fans will hope he's left the drama behind and embraced the responsibility.
