Sources said both jurists are of the view that the concept of 'one nation one election' is not violative of the basic structure of the Constitution but have questioned the extent of power vested with the Election Commission in the proposed law. They have also made certain suggestions while throwing light on the journey of parliamentary system of democracy in the country.
The Joint Committee of Parliament headed by BJP MP P P Chaudhary has been speaking to jurists and legal experts as it prepares its recommendation on the bill. Two other former chief justices of India, U U Lalit and Ranjan Gogoi, have appeared before the committee in past.
While both of them did not question the constitutionality of simultaneous elections, they have questioned some aspects of the bill and offered suggestions.

1 2 Kolkata: As many as 27 of 30 Bengali migrant workers, held by Surajkund police in Faridabad since July 15, have been released, Trinamool Congress MP and chairman of West Bengal Migrant Workers' Welfare Board Samirul Islam said on Saturday. While they were released in a phased manner, three still remain in detention. All of them worked as ragpickers and hail from Nadia. On July 16, CM Mamata Banerjee walked from College Square to Esplanade to protest the detentions of Bengali migrants in different parts of the country. She claimed that the Centre "issued a secret notification in Feb to detain and arrest anyone speaking in Bengali in case of any suspicion". "The same thing happened in BJP-governed Maharashtra too. In Pune, Matuas were detained on suspicion of being Bangladeshi nationals. Shockingly, BJP MP and junior Union minister Shantanu Thakur, himself a Matua, is silent on the issue," he said. Mamata Bala Thakur, TMC's RS MP and a Matua leader , on Saturday visited the houses of some of the detained Matuas living in Bongaon to assure them that the state govt was taking all steps to ensure their early release.

1 2 Guwahati: Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday hit back at his Bengal counterpart Mamata Banerjee following her social media allegations that BJP was pursuing a "divisive agenda in Assam". Sarma said his administration's stance targeted "unchecked" Muslim infiltration from across the border and not its own citizens. In response to Banerjee's claims that the Assam govt was threatening Bengali-speaking residents for asserting their linguistic identity, Sarma accused her of jeopardizing Bengal's future by allegedly promoting illegal encroachment by a "particular community" for electoral gains. Sarma posted on X: "Didi, let me remind you — in Assam, we are not fighting our own people. We are fearlessly resisting the ongoing, unchecked Muslim infiltration from across the border, which has already caused an alarming demographic shift. In several districts, Hindus are now on the verge of becoming a minority in their own land." Gehlot likens Rahul Gandhi to Jyotiba Phule
Jaipur: Former Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot , speaking at the Congress's OBC wing conference here on Saturday, highlighted Rahul Gandhi 's commitment to fighting for OBC rights, comparing him to social reformer Jyotiba Phule. Gehlot said he sees Gandhi as a reformer and saint. Gehlot suggested that many OBC community members were unaware of Gandhi's efforts on their behalf. Challenging Prime Minister Modi's mandate, Gehlot pointed out that 69% of the voters had not supported the current govt. He praised Gandhi's compassionate nature and inclusive vision, predicting that the Congressman might "become a saint" due to his empathy for the poor. The former CM emphasised that India's global leadership aspirations could only be realised through unity across castes and religions, aligning with Gandhi's vision for the nation. Addressing the recent announcement of a caste census, Gehlot credited Gandhi's social justice campaign for forcing the Union govt's hand. However, he expressed scepticism about BJP's commitment, suggesting the announcement might be politically motivated due to upcoming Bihar elections. In a notable statement about religious politics, Gehlot rejected BJP's claimed monopoly over Lord Ram. "Our Ram is 'Maryada Purushottam' Ram," he declared, citing Congressmen with "Ram" in their names while accusing BJP of misusing religion for political gains.
