Khelo India Youth Games Day 11: Maharashtra set to take team championship title; Bihar keeps winning golds
Host Bihar may not be among the top 10 teams in this edition of Khelo India but it continues to make an impression. Bihar's tally of gold medals swelled to seven with victories from an unexpected quarter, Thang-Ta, a traditional martial art practiced in North-East India. Coached by a Manipuri, Bihar won two Thang-Ta golds in Gaya.
Every evening on the tracks of the Patliputra Sports Complex, Bihar has joined the party. On another sweltering evening, Khushi Yadav ran a lonely race to win the 2000m steeplechase gold with ease. It was Bihar's second gold from Track and Field after Alka Singh's shotput gold.
The weightlifting competition, that has produced 13 youth national records, came to an end in Rajgir on Wednesday. Bihar and Jammu Kashmir won their first weightlifting medals of the Games in a sport where Maharashtra were dominant.

The boxing competition, which also came to an end, threw up a few surprises with Mizoram's Samuel Zadeng with his gold in the 70 kg category. As expected, Haryana boxers dominated the ring and have caught the attention of the talent spotters.
In the men's football final in Begusarai, Jharkhand defeated Odisha for the boys' title. Meghalaya and Mizoram finished joint third. The final was well contested with Odisha and Jharkhand finishing 2-2- after regulation time. In the shootout that followed, Jharkhand won 5-4.
On the penultimate day of wrestling competition, Haryana grapplers dominated the podium taking three of the seven golds on offer. In girls' 69kg weight division, Haryana's Manisha emerged the champion after defeating Rajasthan's Palak Yadav 4-0 while the bronze medals went to Anshika Yadav of Uttar Pradesh and Sukhdeep Kumari of Punjab.
In boys' Greco Roman category, Haryana's Vineet (71kg) took home the gold while in boys' U-17 Freestyle category, Sahil enriched the state with the third gold in the 55kg category after beating Delhi's Chirag Dahiya. The bronze medals went to Maharashtra duo of Soham Sunil Kumbhar and Dhanraj Ganapati Jamnik. Thursday will be the final day of the competition with seven wrestling gold medals up for grabs. Even if Haryana wins all seven, Maharashtra look home and dry with a massive lead of 20-plus golds.

The Los Angeles 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games will, for the first time in Games history, allow venue naming rights, organisers said on Thursday, unveiling Comcast and Honda as inaugural partners in a move aimed at boosting commercial revenues. The pilot program, developed with the International Olympic Committee (IOC), will let qualifying LA28 partners retain existing venue names during the Games and buy additional marketing assets. He noted money from selling venue naming rights would be in addition to the overall sponsorship revenue target of $2.5 billion, which LA28 calls the largest commercial revenue raise in sports. 'We've been very conservative, so we have none of this revenue in our budget, so any revenue is upside,' he said. 'Having said that, we think it could be significant. It's a really powerful platform for branded partners of ours to engage with us and also with the globe, because it's part of the broadcast. The reach is really stunning.' From a practical perspective, the potential for SoFi Stadium and Arena to maintain their names during the Games will help fans navigate the city. 'As a pure matter of wayfinding, it's actually an important piece of the puzzle,' he said. Comcast, which holds U.S. broadcast rights through NBC and Peacock, said it would support LA28 'across our entire company,' including coverage and the squash showcase. Honda, which in June was named the Games' automotive sponsor, said its long-backed Anaheim arena would 'step onto the international stage to power Olympic dreams,' according to Ed Beadle, a vice president at American Honda Motor Co. Michael Phelps has launched a fierce criticism of USA Swimming's leadership, with the 23-time Olympic gold medallist labelling the organisation as weak and calling for significant reforms following years of perceived decline. The 40-year-old American, the most decorated Olympian ever with 28 medals, expressed his concerns while admitting he may not want his four young sons to compete in swimming given the current state of the sport in the United States. Reflecting on his competitive career, Phelps conveyed his long-standing frustrations, noting that he often felt ignored, was 'told to be grateful for the chance to compete" and pressured to stay silent and maintain peace. 'First, I must be clear that I have the utmost respect for the U.S. swimmers that competed at the World Championships," Phelps, who retired in 2016, wrote in a detailed Instagram post. 'My criticism is in no way directed at them – I know how hard they work and how honoured they are to represent the U.S. National Team. My criticism targets the system, its leadership, and its failures. 'There have always been cracks in the system but in the last nine years, I've seen those cracks grow." Phelps contrasted the U.S. swim team's success at the Rio Olympics in 2016, where they secured 33 medals, with their performance at the Paris Games last year, which resulted in their lowest medal count in the pool (28) since the 2004 Games in Athens. Khelo India Water Sports Festival mascot released
The mascot for the first ever Khelo India Water Sports Festival (KIWSF), which will be held at the iconic Dal Lake from August 21 to 23 featuring more than 400 athletes from all over the country, was unveiled in Srinagar on Thursday (August 14, 2025). The Himalayan Kingfisher will be the mascot for the festival which is a part of the Khelo India calendar. Before this, the inaugural Khelo India Beach Games were held in Diu in May this year. "The Himalayan the spirit of adventure, nature, and competition in the Games. With its bold orange and blue, it represents energy, tranquillity, and the beauty of Kashmir," stated a press release from the Sports Authority of India. The festival will be hosted by the Jammu and Kashmir Sports Council in collaboration with the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports and the Sports Authority of India. For Jammu and Kashmir, this will be the second Khelo India event after Gulmarg hosted the snow events of the Khelo India Winter Games in March. The KIWSF will feature rowing, canoeing and kayaking as medal events. The demonstration events will be water skiing, shikara race and dragon boat race. More than 400 athletes from 36 states and Union Territories are expected in Srinagar. J&K's Minister for Youth Services and Sports Satish Sharma, and the Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA), Zadibal, Tanvir Sadiq, released the mascot and the logo. The official kits of the Games were also revealed. "Gulmarg has already become the winter games capital of the country, and now Dal Lake will become the water sports hub of the country," said Sadiq.
