Muscat: The Sultanate of Oman joins the world in celebrating Planet Earth Day, which falls on April 22nd each year, under the theme "Our Power... Our Planet."
This event highlights the collective efforts to effect change and protect the planet, as it is everyone's responsibility.
This occasion brings together more than 190 countries to raise awareness among individuals, communities, and organizations about the importance of protecting the environment and its natural resources, the risks and environmental issues facing the planet, and to consolidate the values of sustainability and promote climate action.
In this context, the Environment Authority is working to implement sustainable environmental policies that pay increasing attention to environmental protection through the management of nature reserves, pollution control, and adaptation to climate change.
The Authority also works to develop specific and strategic plans, projects, and initiatives through programs to restore ecosystems, support innovation in clean energy, expand the scope of carbon sequestration projects, promote investment in nature reserves, energy, green hydrogen, and blue carbon, implement environmental policies, and balance modern requirements for implementing environmental, economic, and social projects, such as reducing carbon emissions and increasing green spaces, to achieve a prosperous and sustainable future, prioritizing the environment and natural resources.
The Authority seeks to achieve significant progress in the Global Environmental Performance Index for 2024, with the Sultanate of Oman topping the list of Arab countries and ranking 22nd globally for the least polluted country by 2025, according to the Numbeo platform.
It's worth noting that the event aims to unify international efforts to protect the environment and address the climate challenges threatening the planet. It also aims to inspire action for a cleaner, more just, and more sustainable future by focusing on renewable energy, accelerating the adoption of policies that apply it, and transitioning to clean, green, and circular economies with an environmental dimension, while raising awareness of the need to adhere to them.

Whale carcass washed ashore in South Al Sharqiyah

Al Ashkharah: A whale was found dead on the shores of Al Ashkharah in South Al Sharqiyah this week, after becoming fatally entangled in fishing nets — yet another example of the growing threat marine debris poses to wildlife along Oman's coasts. According to an initial examination, the whale had a rope tightly wrapped around its body, which restricted its movement and ultimately prevented it from breathing. The entanglement is believed to have originated from discarded or lost fishing gear drifting in the water — a recurring hazard in Omani waters. Environmental experts say such cases underscore the dangers of ghost gear — abandoned fishing nets and ropes that continue to trap, injure, and kill marine animals long after they've been discarded. Large marine mammals like whales are especially vulnerable due to their size and the distances they travel. After the carcass was discovered by locals, the Environment Authority was notified and dispatched a team to handle the situation. The authority confirmed the cause of death and carried out standard procedures for carcass removal. In a statement, the Environment Authority reiterated calls for fishermen and sea-goers to properly dispose of fishing gear and avoid polluting marine environments. Officials warned that irresponsible dumping not only threatens marine life but also disrupts delicate ocean ecosystems. Marine conservationists have long pushed for stronger regulations, more rigorous cleanup efforts, and better education around the impact of ghost nets. As cases like this continue to surface, pressure is mounting for immediate action to protect Oman's marine biodiversity from further decline.

Initial examinations conducted by the department's specialists determined that the whale's death was caused by suffocation. Ropes had become tightly wrapped around its body, severely restricting its movement and preventing it from breathing. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the negative effects of marine debris, particularly discarded fishing nets and gear, on marine life. The Environment Authority used the incident to underscore the critical importance of environmental awareness among fishermen and beachgoers. The Authority called for the safe and responsible disposal of fishing gear and urged the public to refrain from throwing any waste into the sea to preserve marine life and maintain ecological balance.
