Mercedes-Benz GLC electric teased ahead of Munich debut
Mercedes-Benz teased the upcoming GLC electric.
advertisementTest prototypes of the electric GLC, heavily camouflaged, recently completed rigorous winter testing in Arjeplog, Sweden, near the Arctic Circle. Tackling sub-zero temperatures, icy roads, and frozen lakes, the all-electric GLC reportedly impressed engineers with its blend of efficiency, safety, comfort, and dynamic capability, reaffirming its readiness for extreme real-world conditions.'Our new electric GLC is a car without compromises and we test it just as uncompromisingly,' said Christoph Starzynski, Vice President Overall Vehicle Development & Integration, Mercedes-Benz Group AG.
Designed from the ground up as a battery electric vehicle (BEV), the GLC EV will feature single and dual-motor configurations, with outputs ranging from 272bhp to 490bhp. A new two-speed transmission is fitted to the primary rear motor, delivering strong acceleration while maintaining high efficiency at cruising speeds. The SUV also adopts Mercedes' new eATS 2.0 electric drivetrain, previously showcased in the Vision EQXX concept. The heart of the GLC EV will be a 94.5kWh NMC battery, supported by an 800V electrical architecture enabling DC fast charging at over 320kW. Reportedly, the car can recover up to 260km of range in just 10 minutes under optimal conditions. Despite the harsh Arctic temperatures during testing, the SUV maintained strong range and quick charging.
The GLC EV's 4MATIC all-wheel-drive system uses independent electric motors on each axle, capable of distributing torque precisely for maximum grip. A new Disconnect Unit (DCU) allows the front axle to be decoupled when not needed, improving range. In cold conditions, the SUV's advanced heat pump system plays a crucial role, drawing energy from the electric drive units, battery pack, and ambient air to warm the cabin using up to 70% less energy than conventional heaters.
Also, new is a brake-by-wire energy recuperation system, which blends regenerative and friction braking seamlessly. The system not only recovers energy to extend driving range but also ensures consistent brake pedal feel, with a built-in hydraulic fallback layer for safety.
Unlike previous standalone EQ models, the GLC EV follows Mercedes-Benz's new EV strategy that emphasises design cohesion with ICE counterparts. This means the EV version will look nearly identical to the standard GLC, aligning with the brand's effort to make electrification more accessible and production-efficient.
Production of the electric GLC will take place at Mercedes-Benz plants in Bremen (Germany) and Beijing (China), with potential expansion to the Tuscaloosa (USA) facility. There's no official word on an India launch yet.Subscribe to Auto Today Magazine- Ends

What is Amadea? US auctioning seized $325M Russian superyacht equipped with 8 state rooms, helipad, gym and more
The United States is auctioning off the $325 million luxury superyacht Amadea, its first sale of a seized Russian superyacht since the launch of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Amadea: The 348-foot-long (106-meter-long) yacht, seized three years ago and currently docked in San Diego, was custom built by the German company Lürssen in 2017. (AP) The auction, which closes Sept. 10, comes as President Donald Trump seeks to increase pressure on Russian President Vladimir Putin to end the war. The U.S. has said it's working with allies to put pressure on Russian oligarchs, some of whom are close to Putin and have had their superyachts seized, to try to compel him to stop the war. The 348-foot-long (106-meter-long) yacht, seized three years ago and currently docked in San Diego, was custom built by the German company Lürssen in 2017. Designed by François Zuretti, the yacht features an interior with extensive marble work, eight state rooms, a beauty salon, a spa, a gym, a helipad, a swimming pool and an elevator. It accommodates 16 guests and 36 crew members. Determining the real ownership of the Amadea has been an issue of contention because of an opaque trail of trusts and shell companies. The superyacht is registered in the Cayman Islands and is owned by Millemarin Investments Ltd., also based in the Cayman Islands. The U.S. contends that Suleiman Kerimov, an economist and former Russian politician, who was sanctioned by the U.S. in 2018 for alleged money laundering, owns the yacht. Meanwhile, Eduard Khudainatov, a former chairman and chief executive of the state-controlled Russian oil and gas company Rosneft, who has not been sanctioned, claims to own it. U.S. prosecutors say Khudainatov is a straw owner of the yacht, intended to conceal the yacht's true owner, Kerimov. Litigation over the true ownership of the yacht is ongoing. A representative of Khudainatov said in an emailed statement Wednesday that the planned sale of the yacht is 'improper and premature' since Khudainatov is appealing a forfeiture ruling. 'We doubt it will attract any rational buyer at fair market price, because ownership can, and will, be challenged in courts outside the United States, exposing purchasers to years of costly, uncertain litigation,' said the representative, Adam Ford. The yacht has been virtually untouched since the National Maritime Services took custody of it in 2022. To submit a sealed bid on it, bidders must put in a 10 million euro deposit, the equivalent of roughly $11.6 million, to be considered. Ford said Khudainatov would go after any proceeds from the sale of the yacht, estimated to be worth $325 million. 'Should the government press ahead simply to staunch the mounting costs it is imposing on the American taxpayer, we will pursue the sale proceeds, and any shortfall from fair market value, once we prevail in court," Ford said. A U.S. aid package for Ukraine signed into law in May 2024 gave the U.S. the ability to seize Russian state assets located in the U.S. and use them for the benefit of Kyiv, which was attacked by Russia in February 2022.

Swiss Firms Rethink Global Strategy After Tariff Surge
Simon Michel couldn't take the risk of waiting any longer. As Switzerland was assessing the shock announcement that the US would impose a 39% tariff, the chief executive officer of Ypsomed Holding AG realized that he needed to act. Ypsomed plans to move some production of medical devices to the German city of Schwerin, where the tariff is less than half the Swiss level. The executive also wants to ramp up production in the US, he told Bloomberg News. The Burgdorf-based company isn't alone. Across the country, executives and owners at businesses — from large multinationals such as food giant Nestle SA to small domestic champions — are trying to figure out how to deal with the new reality. The scale of the levy exceeded all expectations and caught the Swiss business elite off guard. In a call with executives on Monday, one of Switzerland's chief negotiators said that they were still working on getting the overall tariff rate down. Their response to her was blunt: there's no substitute for the US market. Plans to move, such as Michel's, could still change if Switzerland gets Donald Trump to lower the tariff. But with so much at stake, some businesses are taking matters into their own hands. Machine-tool maker Netstal Maschinen AG is looking to reduce the share of Swiss components in its supply chain for products aimed at the US market, which accounts for approximately 15% of revenue. Orders from the US have already fallen 20% in the first half of 2025, CEO Renzo Davatz said. And it's likely to get worse if the Swiss don't get a better deal. A one-hour drive away in Weggis, Adrian Steiner, the CEO of Thermoplan AG, which builds coffee machines for Starbucks among other things, is sketching out plans to expand production capacities in the EU and the US, he said. However, he wants to wait for a final decision until the US tariffs kick in. One high-profile consumer product caught up in the Swiss tariffs is Nespresso. Though Nestle SA sells the coffee capsules all over the world, it only produces them in Switzerland. Most of its other product lines are made locally for their respective markets. The same holds true for many of Switzerland's international listed companies, including consumer brands such as Lindt & Spruengli AG and Logitech International AG, as well as industrial players like ABB Ltd and Holcim AG. After Trump's so-called Liberation Day announcements on tariffs, some firms without fully diversified production front-loaded shippings to the US. Shipping company Kuehne and Nagel International AG saw a slight increase in industry-wide shipments from Switzerland to US in the period. Switzerland is only a small part of their business. But for companies that waited, believing the government's optimistic messaging about a US deal, there was a shock last week. Now, there's no time. 'There is some movement to expedite loadings, but generally the timeline is too tight to load unplanned shipments into containers and to then gate in and get on a ship,' a spokesperson for Kuehne and Nagel said. 'Many hinterland manufacturers simply did not have time.' The risks to the Swiss economy are sizable. A 39% tariff rate might knock off 1% of Switzerland's gross domestic product over the medium term. While large multinational companies have some chance of reorienting supply chains and production to cope, it's much harder for smaller family-owned businesses. There's also the personal cost. Lobby group Swissmem says the tariffs put tens of thousands of Swiss jobs at risk. Among Switzerland's top companies, Roche Holding AG and Novartis AG are in the clear for now as pharmaceuticals are exempt. But that might soon change, with Trump warning he could announce tariffs on the sector in the next week. Some companies have tried to get ahead of the tariffs by frontloading early in the year. 'We transferred a lot of stock already in the first six months of this year when the story about the tariffs started,' watchmaker Swatch said in a statement. 'In such a situation, inventory is key and a competitive advantage.' With assistance from Naomi Kresge, Jennifer Creery, Noele Illien and Sonja Wind.
