Daily Mail09-07-2025
Real Madrid and Paris St-Germain will meet in the FIFA Club World Cup semi-final on Wednesday, with the European heavyweights bidding to join Chelsea in the final of the expanded competition.
A major subplot will be Kylian Mbappe's first match against PSG since his fractious departure from the club on a free transfer last summer.
Ahead of the match, the Real Madrid star has reportedly dropped the legal harassment case he had brought against his former club.
Mbappe will undoubtedly be keen to make his mark against PSG, who went on to win the Champions League for the first time last season in the first campaign since his exit.
Sky Bet are offering odds of 4/1 for Mbappe to score the first goal of the semi-final, while he is 6/5 to score at anytime in the match.
Mbappe's involvement has been a doubt after he was forced to miss Real Madrid's group stage matches with illness.
The French superstar came off the bench in the closing stages of their last-16 and quarter-final ties, with the forward netting a crucial goal in the 3-2 win over Borussia Dortmund.
Real Madrid's breakout Club World Cup star Gonzalo Garcia is second favourite to score first for the Spaniards at 11/2, with the young forward the tournament's joint top scorer with four goals in five games.
Vinicius Jr is third favourite to score first for Real Madrid at 15/2.
As for PSG, Ousmane Dembele can by backed at 5/1 to score the first goal of the semi-final, while Bradley Barcola, Desire Doue, Goncalo Ramos and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia are all priced at 13/2.
PSG are 6/5 favourites to win the match over 7/4 outsiders Real Madrid and reach the final.

England to stop taking the knee over racist abuse

The Lionesses will not take the knee before their Euro 2025 semi-final with Italy on Tuesday after the squad condemned the abhorrent racist abuse suffered by Jess Carter. The defender shared on Instagram that she had been targeted by racist comments online since the start of the tournament. England's players have taken the knee before each of their four games so far but have decided they will remain standing before kick-off on Tuesday, with the squad stating they and football need to find another way to tackle racism. The players' statement read: 'We stand with Jess and all Lionesses players past and present who have suffered racism. 'No one should have to endure such vile abuse, be that in football or any walk of life. Representing our country is the greatest honour. It is not right that while we are doing that some of us are treated differently simply because of the colour of our skin. 'Until now, we have chosen to take the knee before matches. It is clear and football need to find another way to tackle racism. We have agreed as a squad to remain standing before kick-off on Tuesday. 'It is clear we and football need to find another way to tackle racism. We have agreed as a squad to remain standing before kick-off on Tuesday. 'We hope the game can come together to see what more can be done. 'For now, we will return our total focus to an important semi-final. In the meantime, we know the FA are working with UK police and the appropriate bodies. Those behind this online poison must be held accountable.' Carter has started all four of England's matches at the Euros. She endured a difficult night in the opening game with France and in the quarter-final against Sweden but put in excellent displays against Netherlands and Wales. The defender, who plays her club football for American side Gotham FC, penned an emotional statement on social media, detailing the abuse she had received. Her post read: 'A message to the fans…From the start of the tournament I have experienced a lot of racial abuse. 'Whilst I feel every fan is entitled to their opinion on performance and result I don't agree or think it's ok to target someone's appearance or race. As a result of this I will be taking a step back from social media and leaving it to a team to deal with. 'As ever I am grateful for all of the support from the genuine fans but I am taking this measure to protect myself in a bid to keep my focus on helping the team anyway I can. Hopefully speaking out will make the people writing this abuse think twice so that others won't have to deal with it. We have made some historic changes with this Lionesses squad that I am so proud to be a part of and my hope is that by speaking out about this it will make another positive change for all. I'm now looking forward and focusing on putting all of my energy into helping my team. Jess Carter.' The statement was shared by England manager Sarina Wiegman while the Football Association's chief executive Mark Bullingham also condemned the abuse. 'Our priority is Jess and giving her all the support she needs,' Bullingham said. 'We strongly condemn those responsible for this disgusting racism. 'As soon as we were made aware of the racist abuse Jess received, we immediately contacted UK police. They are in touch with the relevant social media platform, and we are working with police to ensure those responsible for this hate crime are brought to justice. 'Regrettably, this is not the first time this has happened to an England player, so we had measures in place to allow us to respond quickly and where possible provide information to support any potential police action. 'We will continue to discuss with the relevant authorities and social media companies about what more can and should be done to prevent this abhorrent abuse.'

Leeds United ready to sell Emile Heskey's relative in £10m deal to raise money for Rodrigo Muniz transfer

LEEDS want a bidding war for forward Mateo Joseph. The Elland Road club are after £10million for the 21-year-old Spain Under-21 striker. 3 3 3 That was proving too rich for Real Betis but fellow LaLiga side Celta Vigo are in the mix, armed with cash from the sale of Fer Lopez to Wolves. Leeds need to boost their kitty to make a new bid to land Fulham's Brazilian hitman Rodrigo Muniz, 24. Joseph's father is a cousin of former England striker Emile Heskey, but despite his dad's English family, Joseph was born in Spain. The 21-year-old grew up in Santander, where he joined the academy of LaLiga 2 outfit Real Racing Club. After impressing in their youth set-up, Joseph left home at just 13 to move to the city of Barcelona and join the academy at Espanyol. The centre-forward spent six years with the Catalan club before leaving Spain for Leeds United when his deal with Espanyol expired in 2022. Since joining Leeds, the 21-year-old has been a mainstay in the team. Last season, he played 39 Championship games, scoring three goals as Leeds secured promotion back to the Premier League. But promotion means they must now invest heavily and are looking to cash in on the Spain Under-21 striker to fund other deals. BEST ONLINE CASINOS - TOP SITES IN THE UK They have been strongly linked with Fulham's Brazilian hitman, Muniz, and even though the player is open to a move, they must meet Fulham's £50million asking price. In the last two seasons, all six teams promoted from the Championship faced relegation, and Leeds manager Daniel Farke is determined to build a team that avoids the same fate. They have already agreed a deal for £17.4m with Hoffenheim midfielder Anton Stach.

Open leader Scottie Scheffler starts with birdie to dampen hopes of chasing pack

A brilliant opening birdie from Scottie Scheffler doused the fire in Rory McIlroy's partisan home crowd as the unflappable world number one began what was expected to be a procession to his first Open title. The American, who did not drop a shot on Saturday in establishing a four-stroke lead, would have heard the chants of 'Rory, Rory, Rory' as his rival strode off the first tee in the group ahead. Advertisement But he was, unsurprisingly, unfazed and despite finding the rough off the tee he struck a brilliant approach to inside a foot and immediately was seven ahead of the Northern Irishman. Playing partner Haotong Lee also birdied so his overall lead remained four. A statement start from Scottie. — The Open (@TheOpen) July 20, 2025 McIlroy birdied the second to reduce the gap to the leader back to six but there were no signs of the early fireworks of the previous day when he was three under through four on his way to a 66. The Masters champion knew he would have to realistically better that if he were to stand a chance of winning his second Claret Jug but struggled for momentum and bundling a chip out of the rough way past the pin resulted in a dropped shot at the fourth he could ill afford. Advertisement Also back at eight under was playing partner Matt Fitzpatrick, who began the day one shot better off only to bogey the par-three third. Bryson DeChambeau was also on that number through 16 holes after a six-birdie charge, while former Masters champion Hideki Matsuyama carded seven birdies and one bogey in the group behind.
