4 held in gang-rape of two minors; BJD seeks stringent action
'We are writing to you with a sense of profound shock, anguish and outrage over the horrific abduction and alleged gang-rape of two minor cousins within the jurisdiction of the Golanthara police station,' the memorandum said.
The BJD leaders, who included the sitting MLAs and former MLAs, urged the SP to expedite the investigation into the Golanthara incident and ensure a clear and strong message is sent that such monstrous acts will not be tolerated.
The BJD also demanded strengthening of intelligence gathering to neutralise criminal elements and prevent such heinous crimes from happening in the future. The memorandum said the BJD will be closely monitoring the progress of the case and will not rest until justice is delivered to the victims and their families.
Among others, Berhampur Mayor Sanghamitra Dalei, former MPs Rajashree Mallick and Chandra Sekhar Sahu and former MLAs Ramesh Chandra Choupatnaik, Bikram Panda and several others were part of the delegation.
Meanwhile, Odisha Police on Saturday arrested four persons on the charge of raping two minor sisters in Ganjam district. The four accused were nabbed while trying to escape from the State, the Berhampur SP said, adding they were booked under different sections of BNS and POCSO Act. He said while the accused youths were in the age group of 21-22 years, the cousins were 13 and 14 years old. The incident took place at a village in Golanthara police station area on June 3 when the sisters were on their way to attend a wedding ceremony.
The incident came to light on June 5 when the mother of one of the survivors reported the matter to the police, who subsequently arrested the four accused in a series of raids.
The SP said that one of the accused was an acquaintance of a girl. He took the two girls to a place, where the four youths allegedly gang-raped them, and later dropped them near their village. Police said the statements of the survivors were recorded. Their medical examinations have been conducted. Both the girls were produced before the District Child Welfare Committee (CWC) for
counselling.

On Tuesday, Kumar in a post on X said: 'I sincerely apologize for the tweets posted regarding Maharashtra elections. Error occurred while comparing data of 2024 LS and 2024 AS. The data in row was misread by our data team. The tweet has since been removed. I had no intention of dispersing any form of misinformation.' In his now-deleted post, Kumar had claimed that in the Ramtek assembly constituency, the number of voters decreased from 466,203 in the Lok Sabha polls to 286,931 during the assembly elections — a dip of 38.45%. Similarly, he claimed that in Devlali, the number of voters dipped 36.82% from 456,072 in the Lok Sabha polls to 288,141 in the assembly elections.

DMs refute SP's charge, Akhilesh says their action has exposed EC
1 2 3 Lucknow: A day after three district magistrates (DMs) rebutted Samajwadi Party 's claims of "illegal deletion of names" from electoral rolls in 2022 assembly polls, party chief Akhilesh Yadav on Wednesday said the move has exposed the Election Commission which had till now denied having received the complaints from his party. DMs of Kasganj, Jaunpur and Barabanki on Tuesday night had junked SP's allegations that names of voters were deleted illegally from electoral rolls in their districts. "We had filed 18,000 affidavits regarding names which were illegally deleted from the electoral rolls in the 2022 UP elections, but the EC had outrightly denied having received the complaints. The sudden activism of the three DMs in responding to our complaints has at least exposed the EC," he said. "For now, the issue is between the EC and the DM. It is for them to decide who is speaking the truth," the SP chief said. He questioned the "sudden activism" of three DMs and reiterated his demand for a probe into what he described as a "nexus" between the BJP govt, poll panel and the local administration. "Why have the DMs suddenly responded after so many years?" Akhilesh said. He said the three have formed an alliance and "lies" was the glue that was holding them together. He added that "superficial responses" by the officials amounted to an admission of their involvement, which should also be investigated. The DMs should provide copies of death certificates of the voters who have died. Kasganj DM Pranay Singh referred to the complaint regarding eight names having been deleted in Amapur constituency. He said seven names were removed as they appeared twice in the voter list and the name of one voter was removed after his wife filled Form 7 for deletion of name. Jaunpur DM Dinesh Chandra said the complaint regarding the removal of five names was received from the Jaunpur assembly seat. Five of them had died before 2022 and this was confirmed by their family members and the corporator concerned. He dismissed the complaint as "baseless and misleading". Barabanki DM Shashank Tripathi said the complaint of two names having been deleted was wrong and that the names were present in the list. Labourer who strangled woman (65) for money arrested after gunfight in Noida
Noida: A murder accused was arrested after an encounter with Badalpur police near an abandoned railway crossing at Roza Yakubpur on Tuesday night. Pappu Mistri (27), a resident of Chhapraula, was the main suspect in the murder of an elderly woman who lived near Vidya World School. Pappu allegedly committed the crime on Aug 3 at the victim's house, where he strangled her and fled with her jewellery and mobile phone. According to police, the arrest was made by a police team that was conducting checks near the closed railway gate. A man was spotted approaching, and when signalled to stop, he tried to flee. Suspecting foul play, cops chased him. Three teams were formed, and a case was registered against unknown persons by the daughter of the deceased at the Badalpur police station. "It was earlier suspected that the murder was carried out for property, but the investigations revealed that the accused worked as a labourer in the area and knew the old woman. On Aug 3, he consumed alcohol, entered the victim's house and committed the crime before fleeing. He also took her phone away to transfer the money from her account," the officer said.
