Josh McErlean and Eoin Treacy up to 10th after first leg of Delfi Rally Estonia

Irish Examiner18-07-2025
Having finished Thursday night's opener in Delfi Rally Estonia - round eight of the World Rally Championship - in thirteenth place, Josh McErlean declared: "You need big commitment in this rally."
During Friday's seven high speed stages the Kilrea driver and his Killeagh co-driver Eoin Treacy showed good form and ended the first leg in tenth place.
It was a spectacular day for Swedish ace Oliver Solberg, back behind the wheel of a Rally1 car for the first time in almost three years, the 23-year old, onboard the Toyota GR Yaris Rally1, leads the way - 12.4s ahead of home hero Ott Tanak (Hyundai i20 N Rally1) with reigning World champion Thierry Neuville (Hyundai i20 N Rally1) just 1.2s further behind in third.
Solberg, a regular WRC2 competitor took his maiden WR stage win on the morning opener (SS2) to move into a 5.3s, he was also quickest on the repeat stage and held an 8.5s lead over Tanak at service.
With a beaming smile, he enthused: "It's the best car I have ever driven. I am just enjoying and if I need to back off, I will back off, but so far I am just building up step by step.'
Surprisingly Tanak, who was best on SS3 and SS5, opined that he struggled for confidence. McErlean had a trio of top ten stage times and held ninth and the top M-Sport Ford driver.
Fourmaux, Solberg and Neuville took stage wins during the afternoon where McErlean admitted that one of the ruts almost took the steering wheel from his hands. As he gained in confidence, his commitment levels also increased, however, he couldn't prevent team mate Martin Sesks from leapfrogging him into ninth.
Winning the unofficial "drift" competition at the roundabout on the day's final but shortest stage, McErlean said: "We were chatting about it at the start of the stage, I channelled my inner Conor Shanahan from the Red Bull Event (Spike Island), at least we have won something today."
On a more serious note, he added: "It's been good, we are not that far away from Martins (Sesks). It's more about the feeling and the confidence in the car. I think we can improve a lot still, it's just trusting that last bit with the pacenotes and the feeling.
"Yeah, a lot more to come from me and Eoin rather than the car."
Championship leader Elfyn Evans (Toyota Gr Yaris Ral1y1) had a tough day running first on the road and sweeping the loose gravel, he ended the day in seventh. There are nine stages today (Saturday) and three on Sunday.

Newcastle to revive Marc Guehi transfer bid but are £10million off Crystal Palace's valuation for defender

However, the Toon are £10million short of Crystal Palace's valuation, according to reports. Guehi has just one year left to run on his contract. And SunSport understands the defender may well stay at the club - along with Eberechi Eze - this summer, in spite of being in demand. Newcastle had three bids for Guehi rejected last year, while Tottenham saw a £70m offer turned down in January - months before the Eagles won the FA Cup. Advertisement READ MORE SPORT STORIES SES PLEASE Benjamin Sesko 'tells both Man Utd and Newcastle he only wants them' Liverpool were believed to be leading the race to sign Guehi this summer as part of their major spending spree to bolster their defence, particularly with Real Madrid sniffing around Ibrahima Konate. The Reds also value Guehi at around £40m, given the length of time left on his contract. But Newcastle's interest suggests they may have leapfrogged the Reds in the hunt for the in-demand defender. The Magpies welcomed Alexander Isak back on Monday after he trained at former club Real Sociedad after attempting to force a move to Liverpool. Advertisement The Swedish striker has agreed personal terms with the Reds, but Newcastle rejected a £110m bid. Isak spent three hours at the training ground before leaving, as he recovers from his injury. 3 TRANSFER NEWS LIVE - KEEP UP WITH ALL THE LATEST FROM A BUSY SUMMER WINDOW Advertisement With Isak expected to leave, the arrival of Guehi to shore up the other end would be a major coup. But SunSport can reveal both Guehi and Arsenal target Eze are potentially set to spend 2025-26 in South London. The Gunners are seemingly unwilling to trigger the England midfielder's £68m release clause. With Palace not needing to sell financially, they are unlikely to lower their demands and Arsenal could look at other targets. Advertisement The Eagles have not received any firm offers for either player and are in no rush to sell. This is good news for the club's fans who are still reeling from their European heartbreak and the fact they look set to be demoted into the Conference League. The club's fans are still stunned at Uefa's decision having qualifed for the Europa League after winning the FA Cup. Palace's appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) will be on Friday. As things stand, they are set to play the loser of Midtjylland vs Fredrikstad in their Conference League play-off.

Eamonn Kelly and Conor Mohan win in Junior WRC category of Secto Rally Finland

Donegal's Eamonn Kelly (Ford Fiesta Rally3), co-driven by Monaghan's Conor Mohan, won the Junior WRC category of Secto Rally Finland, finishing 8.3s ahead of series leader Taylor Gill. The twenty-six year old Frosses driver also secured extra championship points courtesy of three stage wins. Moving into the lead on Saturday's penultimate stage when rival Taylor Gill had trye issues, Kelly punched in the fastest time (SS17) to lead by 21.2s. The Irish pair managed their advantage well. On the final leg - a double run over the famous 23.98km Ouninpohja stage - they went on to claim a famous win. Standing on the top step of the podium, a delighted Kelly, who previously won the JWRC round in Croatia in 2023, said: "This is probably the first win we have really earned. Finland is the place of speed and one of the most iconic rallies in the world, it's a special event to win. "It's a proper rally from the word go, there's no minding, it's flat out, especially when you're racing against really fast guys. "From the start we were in the mix and it's been so enjoyable to be battling it out on these roads, the buzz is unbelievable." Meanwhile, in the main event, another all-Irish crew - Josh McErlean/Eoin Treacy (Ford Puma Rally1) took a season equalling seventh place after they benefitted from the final stage retirement of Hyundai's Adrien Fourmaux. Just like Monte Carlo, they were the top M-Sport Ford crew and also netted their highest points (6) haul. Home hero Kalle Rovanpera, with his maiden Secto Rally Finland, victory led home a Toyota GR Yaris Rally1 top five with a masterful display that powered him into WR title contention - three points behind team mate Elfyn Evans, who regained the championship lead. Irish co-driver Aaron Johnston and Japan's Takamoto Katsuta took second place (39.2s behind) with Sebastien Ogier completing the podium line-up and even though he's on a partial programme, the French ace is only 13 points off the championship lead - the same as pre-event series leader Ott Tanak, who eventually finished tenth after the organisers imposed a five minute penalty. Rovanpera began Saturday's eight stages with a 4.9s lead over the Hyundai of Thierry Neuville whose team mate Adrien Fourmaux was 2.8s further behind in third, but that was as close as they got. Apart from a slow puncture on SS13 where Rovanpera found the conditions the most difficult he's ever faced on home soil, the Finn won five stages and ended the day with a 36.1s advantage. His nearest challengers were his own team mates, a staggering quartet of Toyota GR Yaris Rally1 that provided the Japanese outfit with a lock-out of the top five places. Neuville and Fourmaux stayed in touch and were within 15s of Rovanpera at the midday service, but all changed on the repeat run. Neuville, who lost brakes for a few kilometres on SS14, and Fourmaux both suffered front right wheel puncture early in SS16 before ending the day in sixth and seventh respectively with Neuville also struggling with brake issues. Having begun the day with some understeer, the demise of the Hyundai duo propelled Katsuta into second, Ogier in third had one objective - to stay ahead of fourth placed Evans, who was set to regain the championship lead. Josh McErlean was eighth - gaining a position when his team mate Sesks struggled for vision through a misted screen on SS15 as he lost some two minutes when he had to stop and clear the screen. The wet conditions posed plenty of issues on the same stage for McErlean, who declared: "So, so sketchy. You don't know where the water is or the puddles appear. So tricky. At the start we couldn't see, we opened the vents on the high speed road." Sami Pajari completed Toyota's noteworthy top-five lockout. M-Sport's Gregoire Munster and Martins Sesks completed the top ten. Pre-event series leader Ott Tanak was down in fourteenth position due to the addition of a five-minute penalty imposed for an incident involving a scrutineer on Friday. On the final leg Rovanpera, whose average speed was 129.95kph, went on to take a maximum thirty-five championship points winning the Power Stage as Toyota became the first manufacturer in 35 years to take the top five positions equalling Lancia's record set in 1990. Newcastle make Benjamin Sesko bid with Alexander Isak's future ‘complex'

Updated at 15.03 NEWCASTLE HAVE MADE an official bid to sign RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko after boss Eddie Howe admitted the situation surrounding unsettled star Alexander Isak was 'far from ideal'. All eyes are on St James' Park right now as the Premier League club look to keep the Swedish sharpshooter while also attempting to bring in a big-name striker. The PA news agency understands Newcastle have accelerated talks with Leipzig to sign Sesko, who Manchester United also have in their sights, and submitted an offer reportedly worth up to £69.7million (€80 million). The development comes after the Magpies rejected a £110m (€126m) bid for Isak on Friday from Liverpool, who recently beat them to the signing of Frankfurt frontman Hugo Ekitike. 'I think from my situation, I am very much removed from everything that is happening back home,' Newcastle boss Howe said on Isak. 'I was made aware that there was a bid yesterday. That bid was turned down all before I even heard about it, so I think there's people back in England dealing with the situation. 'I really don't know what's going to happen next, but from our perspective we still support Alex in every way, and my wish is still that we see him in a Newcastle shirt again.' Advertisement Isak did not travel to Asia for Newcastle's pre-season tour due to what the club called a 'minor thigh injury', only for talk of his unhappiness to emerge. Howe admitted 'you don't know what's going to happen from this point' and, surprisingly, that he found out that the 25-year-old was training with former club Real Sociedad through the media. 'I know where he is, really, through the media, so I think from that perspective it's difficult for me to go into any kind of detail,' the Newcastle boss said. 'The situation is far from ideal, and it is quite complex. I think that's all I have got to say.' Newcastle boss Eddie Howe and striker Alexander Isak. Alamy Stock Photo Alamy Stock Photo Howe was speaking at a press conference in Seoul, previewing a friendly against Tottenham and was tight-lipped when quizzed on Newcastle's pursuit of Slovenia international Sesko. The manager said 'he can't talk about individual targets' in the wake of reports in the striker's homeland overnight claiming that the 22-year-old wants to move to St James' Park rather than Old Trafford. Newcastle have now reportedly made a €75m (£65.4m) bid to Leipzig, with a further €5m (£4.3m) in potential add-ons. Howe said: 'We are looking for the best players that we can get. Whatever our target position is, we're looking for the best, so I see all situations open and available to us. 'I feel that's the only way that we're going to get to where we want to go, which is to maximise, and it's quality over quantity. It always has been. 'That's always been the way that we try to work and try to recruit, and I think we've done it pretty well to this point. 'It's been a challenging summer, as you know, because we've missed out on various targets for loads of different reasons. 'But we're still very competitive and we're still in there trying to bring very good players to the club and that won't change until the window shuts.' Meanwhile, Newcastle have completed the signing of Southampton goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale on a season-long loan, with an option to buy. The 27-year-old moved to St Mary's from Arsenal for an initial £18million (€20.6 million) last August and performed well in an embarrassing campaign for the relegated Saints. Ramsdale has secured a Premier League return by joining Newcastle for the 2025-26 season, with Southampton receiving a substantial fee and seeing his wages covered in full as part of the loan. The PA news agency understands the Magpies, who lost out on Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford to Manchester City, also have a purchase option as part of the agreement.
