Horse racing: The top five moments of the Sydney autumn carnival

Don't miss out on the headlines from Horse Racing. Followed categories will be added to My News.
From champion mare Via Sistina to boom fillies Lady Shenandoah and Treasurethe Moment, Sydney's autumn carnival delivered more unforgettable highlights.
Saturday's Group 1 All Aged Stakes meeting at Royal Randwick brought another sensational carnival to a close so this week's Blackbook looks back at the five biggest moments on the track.
1 – VIA LA VIDA
Anytime a horse can emulate an achievement of former superstar mare Winx, it deserves significant recognition. Via Sistina did just that with an awesome autumn carnival that included three Group 1s, headlined by her all-important Queen Elizabeth Stakes triumph that was enhanced by a masterful James McDonald ride. It took her tally to seven Group 1s for the season, equalling the record of Chris Waller's greatest ever horse Winx. Via Sistina is a lock to win Australian Horse of the Year and she was the star of the autumn.
2 – BAKER GOODS
This was the autumn Bjorn Baker has been craving. The affable Warwick Farm conditioner has been one of Sydney's best for some time but solidified his standing among Australia's elite trainers with stellar carnival. Stefi Magnetica gave Baker his 'major' in the Group 1 Doncaster Mile before Arapaho produced a performance for the ages to win the Group 1 Sydney Cup. It could have been even better with Group 1 near misses of Overpass (TJ Smith Stakes) and Within The Law (Champagne Stakes).
3 – LAURIE LEAVES MARK
A year after he went within a whisker of claiming the Golden Slipper, Victorian trainer Matt Laurie returned to Sydney with a bang. While he only saddled up three starters in the autumn, he finished with three Group 1 winners. Treasurethe Moment did the Vinery Stud Stakes-Australian Oaks double while unbeaten colt Vinrock's ATC Sires' Produce Stakes win was industry defining. Vinrock, the first Australian two-year-old winner by I Am Invincible, was quickly snapped up by Yulong and is now one of the most valuable stallion prospects in the country.
4 – FILLIES FILL UP
It's hard to remember a more exciting crop of three-year-old fillies than what we witnessed this autumn. An embarrassment of riches stepped out in Sydney over the autumn with Lady Shenandoah, Treasurethe Moment, Aeliana and Autumn Glow all leaving a lasting impression. It was two Group 1s each for Treasurethe Moment and Lady Shenandoah while Aeliana put the boys with a dominant Australian Derby win. In one start, Autumn Glow lived up to her substantial boom. The Australian three-year-old of the year is destined to be a filly, the only question is, which one?
5 – NEW KIDS ON THE BLOCK
The Australian sprint ranks 'next gen' have arrived and all eyes now look to The Everest. Nathan Doyle's unbeaten boom colt Private Harry is already locked in for the world's richest race on turf after his impressive The Galaxy win. Brilliant TJ Smith Stakes winner Briasa is sure to join him as will Saturday's All Aged Stakes victor Jimmysstar. Hong Kong superstar Ka Ying Rising may dominate Everest betting but the challenge Down Under may be greater than many think.
Special Mentions: Nathan Doyle, Ash Morgan, Hawkes Racing, Michael Freedman, Damian Lane, Tom Charlton.

‘My best win': Aussie Neil Robertson takes down snooker king, wins $1 million

Neil Robertson held off a spirited comeback from Ronnie O'Sullivan to land a £500,000 (A$1.04 million) desert jackpot in a final-frame thriller on Sunday (AEST). The Australian cueist, 43, secured the biggest pay cheque of his career as he beat the Rocket 10-9 in a wonderful Saudi Arabia Snooker Masters final. The Sun reports Robertson, who was dominant in the afternoon session, led 7-2 and was only three frames away from the victory in the so-called 'fourth major'. O'Sullivan, 49, won five frames in a row – his 139 in frame 10 was the 1300th century of his career – to level up at 7-7. Yet despite going 9-8 down following his opponent's fightback, Robertson did not lose faith in Jeddah. Following an O'Sullivan error, he capitalised with a superb break of 87 in a nervy clincher. It was the second year running that this title had gone down to a final frame. It was Robertson's 26th ranking tournament victory, his second this calendar year, and frame 19 was the most expensive in snooker history – worth £300,000 (A$625,000) to the winner. When Robertson became champion of the world in 2010, he earned £250,000 (A$520,000) for his troubles. But the Saudis have stumped up half a million quid for this tournament, now in its second year, to rival the same fee for the current Crucible conqueror. Watch Neil Robertson's matchwinning frame in the video above For Robertson, he gets to enjoy the glory of success as well as the cash. Speaking after the victory, he said: 'I cannot possibly explain in words what it means. 'To play Ronnie in a final of this magnitude when I was a kid in Australia, I could never have dreamt of that. 'The way he came back, my God, being in this arena was the last place I wanted to be. 'It was incredible. The frame he won to go 8-8, the brown was absolutely incredible. He was unlucky in the last frame. 'If he lands on the ball at 9-8, it's all over. I'm incredibly grateful to be able to share this stage with him. 'It's not about winning and losing, it's about me doing my best and putting on a great match for everyone. The crowd got their money's worth these last two years. 'I think this surpasses the World Championship win. I have had to answer a lot of questions. 'Can I beat someone like Ronnie in a final of this magnitude? To beat him with so much on the line, it's definitely my best win.' While O'Sullivan said: 'Neil deserved his victory. He was the better player. I tried to hang up to him, make a game of it. 'I was pleased I did that tonight. At 6-2 down, he outplayed me. At 7-2 it looked like it was an early night. 'I'm pleased to take it a little bit longer. Neil played the best snooker all week. 'I came here and would have been happy to win a couple of matches. So, to get to the final, I'm very, very happy. You cannot be too greedy. I am disappointed I didn't win.' O'Sullivan, using a new cue for this season, will not be too disappointed by his performance in the Kingdom. He will fly back to his new base in Dubai with £200,000 (A$416,000) for being the finalist at this nine-day event, a £147,000 (A$306,000) 147 bonus plus an extra £33,333 (A$69,000) for getting the event's high break. That is because on Friday evening he hit two 147s in the 6-3 semi-final win over fellow Englishman Chris Wakelin. It was an incredible feat – it had only ever been done once before in professional snooker – and he has earned a whopping bonus off the World Snooker Tour. Welshman Jackson Page hit two maximums in World Championship Qualifying in Sheffield, but O'Sullivan's pair of clearances came in a best-of-11 frames match.

Rahm a winner despite losing LIV Golf playoff

Jon Rahm has successfully defended his LIV Golf season points title without winning an event all year, closing with an 11-under 60 before losing a playoff to Sebastian Munoz on the first extra hole in the Indianapolis event. Munoz won two days after becoming the first player to shoot 59 with a double bogey. The Colombian — with Rahm hitting balls on the driving range — birdied the final two holes in regulation for a 65 to match Rahm at 22 under at The Club at Chatham Hills. Rahm also lost on the first extra hole last week outside Chicago, falling to Dean Burmester in a three-way playoff that included Josele Ballester. On Sunday, Munoz beat the Spanish star with a birdie on the par-4 18th in the playoff. Rahm took the season points title from Chilean Joaquin Niemann, a five-time winner this season. Niemann shot a 66 to tie for fourth at 17 under, his first top-10 finish of the year that he didn't win. Munoz led Torque GC to the team event championship, finishing at 64 under to break the LIV record of 53 under. Cameron Smith (67) was the best-placed Australian at 13 under and in a tie for 14th. Compatriots Lucas Herbert (67) completed his three rounds four under the card, Matt Jones (67) three under and Marc Leishman (73) two over. The all-Aussie Ripper GC came home in 13th, and last, at 18 under. Ian Poulter birdied four of his last five holes for a 67 to tie for 17th and avoid relegation from the tour. Majesticks teammate Henrik Stenson was relegated, missing a 20-foot birdie putt on the final hole that would have keep him on the tour and left Poulter out. With AAP.

Boomers win third straight Asia Cup title after one-point thriller over China

Australia have lifted the Asia Cup for the third time in a row after a magnificent, nerve-shredding and ultimately euphoric 90-89 victory over China at the King Abdullah Sports City in Jeddah. There could not have been a tighter finish, with China missing a go-ahead shot as time expired. It was a supreme team effort but leading the way for the Boomers was the unstoppable Xavier Cooks, who paved the way with 30 points on an efficient 13-of-17 shooting. He also collected nine rebounds and constantly broke down China's defence with his drives. He was named the game's most valuable player. Jaylin Galloway, playing in his first Asia Cup final, also rose to the occasion, drilling six triples on his way to 23 points and five rebounds. He was later named the tournament's MVP and nominated in the All Star Five along with fellow Boomer Jack McVeigh. William Hickey delivered when it mattered most, finishing with 15 points, seven rebounds, four assists and two blocks, including clutch plays down the stretch. For China, Hu Mingxuan carried the offensive load with 26 points and five three-pointers, while veteran big man Hu Jinqiu supplied a 20-point, 10-rebound double-double that kept his team in contention until the final seconds. China struck first with a strong opening frame behind Jinqiu's inside scoring and Mingxuan's timely shooting, building a 25-17 lead. That cushion stretched to 36-21 in the second quarter, before Cooks powered a furious Australian fightback trimming the deficit to just four at halftime. The third quarter saw momentum swing wildly. Galloway's fastbreak slam capped a 9-0 surge that briefly put the Boomers ahead, only for China to hit back with big triples from Cheng Shuaipeng and Lei Meng. Galloway's buzzer-beating corner three left Australia trailing by just three entering the final frame, setting the stage for a tense finish. Cooks and Galloway combined for clutch baskets, while Mingxuan answered with big shots of his own. Hickey's backdoor finish, a key putback and Will Magnay's huge block kept Australia in front by the slimmest of margins. With under a minute left, Hickey's uncontested putback gave the Boomers the lead for good before Cooks and Zhao Rui traded free-throws. Mingxuan's potential game-winner at the buzzer bounced off the iron, sealing the 90-89 victory for coach Adam Caporn's side. For Australia, the win in Saudi Arabia means more than just another trophy. Since debuting in 2017, the Boomers have been untouchable in Asia Cup play, now boasting an 18-0 record and cementing themselves as the modern powerhouse of Asian basketball.
