Chris O'Dowd voices support for controversial TV writer Graham Linehan: ‘His views are not peripheral'
Comedian Chris O'Dowd has voiced support for Graham Linehan, the Irish TV writer who claims to have become the 'most hated man on the internet' following repeated accusations of bigotry and transphobia.
O'Dowd starred in the Channel 4 sitcom The IT Crowd, which Linehan created, between 2006 and 2013. Linehan is also known for creating the Irish priest sitcom Father Ted and is listed as one of the co-creators of BBC sitcom Motherland.
Over the past several years, Linehan has become known for sharing anti-transgender rhetoric online, and has attracted heavy criticism from LGBT+ groups for characterising the trans rights movements as 'paedophilic', branding individual critics 'groomers'. Linehan has claimed that his views on trans rights have led to a blacklisting from the entertainment industry, as well as the dissolution of his marriage.
Speaking to The Times in a new interview, O'Dowd described Linehan as 'the best comedy writer' he had worked with, and claimed that Linehan's views were 'not peripheral'.
'I haven't seen him in a few years, I text him every now and again,' O'Dowd remarked. 'I have people come up to me and tell me that I've changed their life because of this show that I was really a small part in. And so I always get in touch with him and let him know, 'I just want you to know how much f***ing love I get for your work.' I wish he was writing more, and I wish he was in the industry more. I think he's the best comedy writer I've worked with.
'I don't necessarily want to get into his views,' he continued, 'but I do think that it's a shame that more people don't go and talk to him about them because – whether I agree with them or not – they're not peripheral. I know the press is trying to make loads of money out of all of the division, but don't actually want to go and talk to him about it and I think that's a shame.'
Last year, Linehan announced that he was moving to the US to film a new sitcom starring Deuce Bigalow: Male Gigolo actor Rob Schneider. Former GB News presenter Andrew Doyle is also said to be involved in the project.
Linehan is also currently involved in a legal battle after being sued by former Holby City actor David Paisley for defamation, over statements made on his substack and social media pages.

Woke-obsessed BBC would rather hand itself in to cops than air Clarkson's Farm – and that's why terrestrial TV is dying
APPROACHING four hours into the new Clarkson's Farm and not one animal had kicked or butted Jeremy in the nuts. A glaring sin of omission as far as most viewers were probably concerned. 5 Clarkson's Farm remains the best thing on TV and one of those incredibly rare shows that can make you smile just through the simple act of pressing 'play' Credit: Prime Video 5 BBC tried to copy Clarkson's Farm with shows like Kelvin's Big Farming Adventure, but has not come close to recreating the magic Credit: ITV Because, in terms of livestock, I think a bull was the only creature who hadn't poleaxed Clarkson during...

Gogglebox favourite set to become a millionaire with huge investments
The Channel 4 star, who has been a staple of Gogglebox since 2017, is now able to splash the cash thanks to keeping up his blue collar job while filming the reality show Gogglebox star Pete Sandiford is on track to become a millionaire, thanks to some seriously smart money moves away from the TV screen. The 30-year-old, who's been a fan favourite on the Channel 4 show since 2017 alongside his younger sister Sophie, has been quietly building a small fortune behind the scenes. The siblings are known for having a hilarious back-and-forth, and have become staples of the Channel 4 show. While Pete's telly antics earn him around £1,500 per episode - split with his sister, of course - he has never solely relied on fame to fund his lifestyle. In fact, he still works as a roofer and builder, and often splits his time between filming and being up on rooftops in his hometown of Blackpool. Pete co-runs a successful construction business, TJ Joinery & Construction (NW) Ltd, which posted a tidy profit of over £88,000 in its first set of accounts. But that's just the start of his entrepreneurial streak. He has recently launched two companies of his own: Corgi Media Ltd, which handles his earnings from the entertainment world, and Corgi Real Estate – a property investment firm. His first real estate ventures involved purchasing a house in Fleetwood and an apartment in Thornton-Cleveleys, which are reportedly each worth £80,000. Industry insiders say these investments, combined with his building business and TV work, have significantly boosted his net worth - and he is now well on the way to joining the millionaire club. Although his bank balance is growing rapidly, Pete has stayed humble. He told The Sun he still finds it odd to be treated as a celebrity, adding: "I'm just a builder from Blackpool. It's a bit strange when people know who we are. I was on a roof yesterday." Pete and Sophie first appeared on Gogglebox during its tenth season. Off-screen, Pete is married to Paige Yeomans, who he has two young children with. She gave birth to their son Jimmy in late 2021, and they went on to have Evie together in June 2023. He tends to keep his family life private, and only confirmed his engagement after Sophie let it slip during filming. However, he did open up about a family-related matter on Gogglebox once, admitting his wife was stressing him out during the process of trying to plan Evie's birthday party. Pete told his sister: "Paige has been doing my head in. You know [daughter] Eva's birthday party? Have you rung about the hot pot? Have you rung about the hot pot? I was in a meeting at work the other day and she rung me four times. Guess what about?" With a chuckle, he continued: "Honestly, I said, why are we not just having sandwiches? Do I look like I am Jeff Bezos?" Meanwhile, Sophie previously worked at Debenhams before retraining as a florist. She has now launched her own business called Petali Floristry. She is also in a long-term relationship with boyfriend Ben McKeown.
