Aussies make history with Windies demolition

Yahoo29-07-2025
A T20 'transition' is happening in real time and tracking towards World Cup success, according to spin star Adam Zampa, as Australia completed a first-ever 5-0 series clean sweep against the West Indies in Basseterre.
In the absence of key fast bowlers Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins, Ben Dwarshius and Nathan Ellis combined for five wickets to roll the home team for just 170 batting first in the final encounter.
A golden duck to fill-in opener Glenn Maxwell as a part of a top-order collapse that reduced the tourists to 3-25 put the chase in jeopardy.
But then Tim David smashed 30 runs off 12 balls and the powerful Australian middle order, including revelation Mitch Owen (37 off 16) and man of the series Cameron Green (32 off 17), pushed hard to set up the history-making, three-wicket win with three overs to spare.
'I didn't expect 5-0 at the start of the series,' captain Mitch Marsh said.
'But we played some great cricket. It was something we spoke about after the fourth game. We knew no Australian team had completed a clean sweep.
'We've had guys come in and played different roles for us. We spoke pre-tour about having flexibility and fluidity as a group.
'The way T20 is going teams just keep going now and it's exciting and hopefully we can continue our power hitting.'
Owen and Green smashed 22 runs off the eighth over, the biggest haul of the game, with the duo and David combining for nine fours and seven sixes, including one Owen smashed out of the ground as the new power-hitting Aussies showed the way.
'I'm still trying to work T20 batting out. I had some great partnerships during the series,' said Green, who hopes to be back bowling soon.
Playing in his 100th T20 international, becoming just the fourth Australian to reach the mark, Zampa said the team's rebuilding had taken a huge step in the West Indies.
The emergence of Green in the batting order, debuts for Owen and spinner Matt Kuhnemann, as well as an increased presence from all-rounder Aaron Hardie and more game time for left-arm quick Dwarshius, were all standouts.
Zampa, who hasn't missed a T20 international for 18 months, said it all pointed the team in the right direction ahead of the next World Cup in 2026 in India.
'We've been playing really good cricket; our World Cups haven't gone to plan the last couple, but there's a lot of new guys, new faces and new roles, so getting ready for whatever pops up in that T20 World Cup. It's all (about) the build up to that,' he said.
'I've seen a transition in the way that T20 is played in particular and the depth that we've got.
'Guys like Mitch Owen, (have) a lot of power (and there's) a lot of dynamic players through the middle, guys that can hit it out of the ground.
'That's just the way T20 is going and it's the way that we're playing our game as well and it's really exciting.'
SPINNER JOINS 100 CLUB
Zampa became the fourth Australian, but first bowler, to play 100 T20 internationals, joining Maxwell (120), David Warner (110) and Aaron Finch (103), and is his country's most prolific wicket-taker in the format with 124 wickets.
He's also played 100 ODIs and his combined 221 white-ball appearances puts him in the same company as Aussie bowling greats Glenn McGrath (250 ODIs and two T20Is) and Brett Lee (221 ODIs and 25 T20Is).
'A proud moment to play 100 T20 internationals, not many of us have done it,' Zampa said.
'I've played a lot more than I thought I would … it's a nice achievement, it goes to show the longevity and I've just tried to make this spot mine.
'I love playing for Australia and I've always tried to put that first. I've always made sure that I'm tip-top for these games, it's something I pride myself on.'

Praggnanandhaa looks to achieve the No. 1 chess ranking to add to India's dominance

India has become a major power in international chess led by its highest-ranked player, Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa. He's No. 4 in the world, one place above compatriots Gukesh Dommaraju, the current world champion, and Arjun Erigaisi, who are tied for fifth. Praggnanandhaa, who will celebrate his 20th birthday on Sunday, has an ambition to be the best. Beating the current No. 1 Magnus Carlsen in 2022, when Praggnanandhaa was congratulated by India cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar, was an early sign that his ambition is realistic. 'I can become world No. 1 and world champion,' he told The Associated Press. He said the presence of his Indian compatriots near the top of the rankings helps. 'We all push each other. Gukesh winning the world championship inspired me to push myself. We are growing together and it's good for all of us," he said. At 12 years and 10 months, 'Pragg' became one of the youngest-ever grand masters, the title awarded to exceptional players by the world's chess federation. 'I think (in India) all of us have these common traits that I think comes from the Indian background. I think we are all, hard-working and we focus on improving more, rather than results ... but it is an individual sport, so people have their own strengths and weaknesses.' In 2023, he was praised by India Prime Minister Narendra Modi for beating the second- and third-ranked players to make it to the World Cup final — India accounted for four of the last eight in the tournament — where he was beaten by Carlsen. A long journey He has come a long way since he first picked up chess pieces at the age of five to play against his sister — Vaishali Rameshbabu is a double youth champion — at home, never imagining that he would one day be recognized in the streets of his hometown Chennai, the capital of Tamil Nadu that has been at the center of the chess explosion. Before 2000, India had three grand masters but has produced over 80 since, with 30 coming from the southern state alone. The most famous was the godfather of Indian chess. Viswanathan Anand became a grand master in 1988 as a teenager and went on to win five world championships. 'We started playing chess when Anand was world champion,' said Praggnanandhaa. 'He inspired all of us.' Having a star at the top was helped by healthy grassroots competition in Chennai. 'There were lots of local events happening every weekend and the players were really strong," he said. "I was always playing in higher categories, so when I was playing my age category, I was just already way stronger because of that experience.' Financial help needed When players reach a certain level, resources are needed. For those not from wealthy backgrounds, the private as well as the public sector can help young talents turn a hobby into a career. There may be more money in the future due to digital world getting involved in one of the most ancient of games. Praggnanandhaa competed at the esports World Cup in Saudi Arabia in July, the first edition to feature chess. ___

Billy Slater issues Jayden Campbell message to Titans amid uncertainty at club

Maroons coach Billy Slater says Jayden Campbell is his 'favourite player to watch' in the NRL and insists the Titans should be doing everything in their power to keep the playmaker at the club. However, the uncertainty around coach Des Hasler's future could complicate the situation around Campbell, who will be free to speak to rival clubs from November 1, if he does not agree a new deal with Gold Coast before then. Campbell signed a two-year extension with the Titans last season that keeps him on the Gold Coast until the end of 2026. But the 25-year-old is not contracted beyond next season and looms as a potential big-money recruit for rivals, if he hits the NRL open market on November 1. Perth Bears coach Mal Meninga has already made it clear he wants to attract some of the best talent when he starts building his roster for the NRL's newest franchise later this year. And Campbell certainly fits the bill as the type of superstar signing that Meninga could be targeting for their entry into the NRL in 2027. The Titans halfback has emerged as the main man for Hasler towards the back end of this season, with his dazzling form helping the cellar-dwellers spring a massive upset against the Warriors in round 21. He followed that up with another impressive display in Gold Coast's controversial golden point defeat to reigning premiers Penrith last week. However, Campbell's future beyond next season is still unclear, with no reported movement around a contract extension at the club. There were even suggestions in recent weeks the Titans were shopping the playmaker to rival clubs. But Slater insists Campbell is one of the first players he'd build the club around, and warned the Titans about the importance of locking down his future as soon as possible. Billy Slater impressed by Titans star Jayden Campbell Slater also pointed to the loyalty Campbell showed by inking an extension last year, when a big-money move to a rival club was on the cards. And he says Gold Coast would be wise to repay that loyalty by locking down one of their most talented and exciting local talents, long-term. "He'd be in my team, absolutely," the Queensland coach said on Nine's Billy Slater Podcast. "I remember when he re-signed with the Titans [in 2023], there was a lot of opportunity to go elsewhere and probably for a lot more money. "But he's a Gold Coast boy, he grew up there and he wanted to stay there. I thought that showed a whole heap of loyalty and he's someone that you can really build around. [He is] probably my favourite player to watch in the competition. "He plays with humility, he plays with respect and he is so brilliant at so many different things in the game. His running game is outstanding and the way he is elusive in traffic, it looks like he knows what he's doing and everyone else doesn't know what he's doing. "He's got a great passing game and he's evolved into this halfback now. "We all know what type of player his father (NRL great Preston Campbell) was and he's certainly got those traits that Preston had in his game." Doubts still surround Des Hasler's coaching future at Titans Complicating Campbell's contract situation is the future of Hasler, whose coaching tenure appeared to be coming to an end this season. But Gold Coast's resurgent form - off the back of Hasler's epic dressing room spray after the round 20 loss to the Tigers - has led to suggestions the veteran coach could still be at the helm next season. RELATED: Teammate detail behind Eels grand final star's fresh push to leave club Penrith's finals charge hits major hurdle after worrying Isaah Yeo news Dragons set to sign QLD Origin player as former coach lands new gig Nine's Danny Weidler reported this week that while Titans hierarchy may still call time on the veteran coach's career at the end of the season, Hasler is working his way back into their good books. "I still wouldn't put my house on him coaching next year at the Titans, but from what I was told, that spray he gave on camera impressed people," Weidler told Triple M about Hasler's Leichhardt Oval dressing room blow-up. "They have played OK the last couple of weeks... apparently it showed the passion. I still think there will be a conversation at the end of the year, see where things are at. But I think they want to treat Des with respect."
