Arkansas Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders to headline signature South Carolina GOP event

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Arkansas Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders is set to headline the latest iteration of an event previously billed as the largest annual gathering of Republicans in South Carolina, a state traditionally key to picking the GOP's presidential nominees, and one in which she already has deep relationships.
Rep. Sheri Biggs of South Carolina's 3rd District told The Associated Press that Sanders would be the featured speaker at her Salute to Liberty, slated to take place Aug. 18 in Anderson. In an interview last week, Biggs said she felt the governor 'represents what the people in the 3rd District believe in, our morals, just down-to-earth hardworking people that love the Lord and want to live in peace with their families and uphold our conservative values.'
Historically a catalyst for Republican White House hopefuls, the South Carolina venue provides Sanders a chance to introduce herself to a large number — typically around 2,000 — of party activists. It's also a crowd with which President Donald Trump — whom she served as press secretary during his first administration — remains popular.
Sanders, whose name comes up among potential 2028 presidential contenders, has been making trips to South Carolina since her father, former Arkansas governor and current U.S. ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee, sought the 2008 GOP nomination. She's recently been in other early-voting states herself, including a speech earlier this month at the Family Leadership Summit in Iowa, an annual event held by a conservative Christian group.
For years, the South Carolina occasion was billed as Rep. Jeff Duncan's Faith & Freedom BBQ, a fundraiser benefiting his reelection campaign. In a conservative-rich area, it became a showcase for future White House contenders, including then-Vice President Mike Pence, Sens. Ted Cruz, Tim Scott and Marco Rubio, and former U.N. Ambassador and South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley.
The barbecue was upended just weeks after the 2023 event, when Duncan's wife filed for divorce, saying the congressman left her, was having a sexual relationship with a lobbyist and had been unfaithful before during their 35-year marriage. Last year, Duncan opted not to seek reelection to an eighth term, following the 2023 diminishment of his reputation for conservative family values.
In her first political run, Biggs — a nurse practitioner and Air National Guard officer — defeated a Trump-backed primary opponent last year. Mark Burns, a Black pastor who has been by Trump's side for nearly a decade, had unsuccessfully run for Congress twice before.
Biggs easily won the general election in the district, which has been in GOP hands since Republican Lindsey Graham, who is now seeking his fifth U.S. Senate term, won it in 1994. Six months into her first term, Biggs said that she knew she wanted a district-unifying event of her own, as well as one that could continue to act as a showcase for potential GOP presidential candidates seeking to get to know its voters.
'I do want people to know that I'm here to serve this district, and that means making myself available and being out front and accessible to our voters, and hearing their needs,' she said. 'I'm here to serve the district, and that doesn't just mean everybody who voted for me.'
In some ways, Biggs' event will be familiar. It's being held in the same venue as Duncan's barbecue, a civics center in Anderson, and there will still be $1 tickets for law enforcement officers and first responders. As for the menu, Biggs said she'll be shifting away from the buffet line of barbecue, baked beans and rolls, with a catered, 'more of a sit-down type of dinner.'
'It's not so much that I don't think the barbecue was great, I just want my own identity,' Biggs said. 'I want people to realize that it's a new ballgame, and I want to move forward on my own accord.'

Evening Edition: California Congressman Wants To Stop Nationwide Redistricting War

What began in Texas with Democrat state lawmakers fleeing Austin to cities like Chicago and Boston to avoid a vote to change their redistricting map has turned into a country-wide redistricting war. Now blue-state governors are threatening their own redistricting to push back on Republicans trying to gain five more seats in Congress. A California Congressman says he has the answer on redistricting and has proposed a bill to end the argument. FOX's Ryan Schmelz speaks with California Congressman Kevin Kiley (R) who has introduced a bill that would codify that redistricting in states only happens once every 10 years. Charlie Kirk Comes Up With Bonkers Solution to Housing Crisis

MAGA podcaster Charlie Kirk went on a bizarre rant on his podcast show Wednesday, claiming the solution to the housing crisis is locking more people up. Kirk said a group of Republican lawmakers and donors had come to him for advice, asking what specific issue Republicans should 'own and be known for.' 'One of my hopes is to turn the Republican party into a resolutely stronger party on crime,' Kirk said. 'We are not harsh enough on crime in this this is not just about stopping criminals. If you enforce the law, housing will be cheaper because more of the country will be livable.' Kirk, who does not have a formal background in finance, economics, or real estate, said the reason for expensive housing was 'because you have a small group of law-abiding young people that want to live in certain zip codes.' 'Why don't you open up more zip codes?' Kirk proposed, arguing that greater rates of incarceration would cool the housing market. The far-right college dropout–turned–influencer also jumped to conclusions to claim that with more arrests and more police officers enforcing the law, America will have more manufacturing, causing economic growth. 'If you enforce the law we'll have more manufacturing here in economy will grow faster.' Kirk did not share any statistics or facts to back his statements, but said that crime rates were going down across the country, a phenomenon he labeled 'The Donald Trump effect.' 'The Donald Trump effect is real, the more we do mass deportations, the more criminals know that they might end up getting a prison sentence, the more we're seeing the rate of violent crime decrease, but that is not stopping, of course, all violent crime.' 'We do not have enough people in jail in this country,' Kirk said. Kirk, who is the founder of conservative non-profit Turning Point USA, also dismissed the argument that the prison-industrial complex is an issue in the U.S. 'We're just a more violent country, than other countries,' he said. According to a report from Bloomberg, there are a variety of reasons that contribute to the high prices Americans are currently experiencing post-pandemic, including greater demand, a general shortage of housing, along with growing competition from 'large-scale institutional investors' who view family homes and apartments as a 'lucrative new asset class.' Myanmar signs deal with Washington lobbyists to rebuild US relations

By David Brunnstrom WASHINGTON (Reuters) -A Washington lobbying firm has signed an agreement worth $3 million a year with Myanmar's Ministry of Information to help the long-time military-ruled country rebuild relations with the United States. According to documents submitted under the U.S. Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA), the DCI Group signed the agreement with the ministry on July 31, the day Myanmar's military nominally transferred power to a civilian-led interim government ahead of a planned election. Myanmar's leadership under military chief Min Aung Hlaing seized power in a 2021 coup and that year an Israeli-Canadian lobbyist they hired to represent them in Washington and other capitals said he had stopped his work because U.S. sanctions on the generals prevented him from being paid. The U.S. Treasury Department, the DCI Group, the U.S. State Department and Myanmar's Washington embassy did not immediately respond to requests for comment when asked if U.S. sanctions would affect the agreement between the Myanmar ministry and the DCI Group. The formation of an interim government signals no change to the status quo in Myanmar, with Min Aung Hlaing holding on to all major levers of power as acting president while retaining his position as chief of the armed forces. He has appeared eager to engage with U.S. President Donald Trump's administration after years of isolation. When Trump threatened new tariffs on Myanmar's U.S.-bound exports this month as part of his global trade offensive, he did so in a signed letter addressed personally to Min Aung Hlaing. The general responded by lavishing praise on Trump for his "strong leadership" while asking for lower rates and the lifting of sanctions. He said he was ready to send a negotiating team to Washington, if needed. "TRADE, NATURAL RESOURCES" According to the FARA filing, the DCI Group "shall provide public affairs services to (the) client with respect to rebuilding relations between the Republic of the Union of Myanmar and the United States, with a focus on trade, natural resources, and humanitarian relief." The filing was signed on August 1 by DCI managing partner Justin Peterson, who served in the previous Trump administration, and another managing partner, Brian McCabe. Reuters reported last year that the FBI has been investigating the DCI Group over its alleged role in a hack-and-leak operation that targeted hundreds of its client Exxon Mobil's biggest critics. The DCI Group has said the allegations that it commissioned the hacking operation were false and that it directs all of its employees and consultants to comply with the law. In 2008, two top aides to then Republican presidential nominee John McCain resigned after work they did with the DCI Group for a previous military junta in Myanmar came to light. Jim Murphy, a former DCI president and managing partner, served as Trump's national political director during his 2016 campaign. Myanmar's state media reported on Thursday that Myint Swe, who became Myanmar's president during the 2021 coup that saw the arrest of incumbent Win Myint and Nobel laureate and de facto leader Aung San Suu Kyi, had died in hospital earlier in the day. Myint Swe, a 74-year-old former general, was placed on medical leave in July last year, with his duties passed to Min Aung Hlaing. Engaging the junta would be a sharp departure for the United States, given U.S. sanctions on the military leaders and the violence committed against the Rohingya minority that Washington calls genocide and crimes against humanity. Last month, the Trump administration lifted sanctions designations on several junta allies, but U.S. officials said this did not indicate any broader shift in U.S. policy toward Myanmar and was unrelated to the general's letter. Last week Reuters reported that the administration had heard competing proposals on ways to divert Myanmar's vast supplies of rare earth minerals away from strategic rival China, although nothing had been decided upon amid major logistical and geopolitical obstacles. Securing supplies of so-called heavy rare earths, used in high-tech weaponry, is a major focus of the administration in its competition with China, which is responsible for nearly 90% of global processing capacity.
