IPL 2025: Kartikeya, Madhwal come in as RR elect to bowl first against unchanged MI

Hans India01-05-2025

Jaipur: Kumar Kartikeya Singh and Akash Madhwal come into Rajasthan Royals' (RR) playing eleven as captain Riyan Parag won the toss and elected to bowl first against an unchanged Mumbai Indians (MI) in Match 50 of the Indians Premier League (IPL) 2025 at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium here on Thursday.
RR are currently in seventh place on the points table and need to win all their remaining games to have a chance at entering the playoffs. But it's easier said than done against MI, who are on a five-match winning streak. A win for MI on Thursday will help them replace Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) at the top of the points table.
After winning the toss, Parag said Kartikeya and Madhwal, playing his first game of the current season, have been drafted into the playing eleven due to Wanindu Hasaranga having a niggle, while Sandeep Sharma is unavailable for the rest of the competition after suffering a fracture in his finger, as said by RR before toss happened.
'We might see some dew later. Usually, the wicket settles down a little later at night. Want to exploit that. We've kept it very simple regardless of winning or losing (on celebration after Vaibhav Sooryavanshi's whirlwind century). Rahul sir has made it clear, we keep it simple, whether we go high or low.'
'Three games ago, the message was we take it one game at a time. If we play to our potential, we know how good we can be. Just want to give everyone the freedom to play their game,' he said.
MI skipper Hardik Pandya stated he would have bowled first as well at a venue where they haven't won a game since 2012. 'It has always been about how we can play good cricket. The conversation was always about how we can get better, we've spoken about the same, and nothing changes.'
'We want to be fearless and not let fear of failure kick in. Don't decide how much we need to put on, have a set marker, but we need to analyse the wicket. Quite confident about batting on this wicket. There hasn't been much dew around.'
RR will be donning a special all-pink jersey as part of the match being a 'Pink Promise' game. Under this, 100 rupees from every match ticket and sale of special jerseys will go to support women-led rural transformation in Rajasthan, including lighting up six homes in the Sambhar region with solar power for every six hit by either team in the game.

'Bumrah reached out before I was getting surgery': Cameron Green opens up on India star's 'special' gesture

Australia's Cameron Green revealed how a special message from Jasprit Bumrah helped him stay positive ahead of back surgery in 2024. Green is now set to play as a specialist batter in the WTC Final. read more Australia all-rounder Cameron Green has revealed a heartwarming gesture from India's pace star that gave him confidence before undergoing back surgery last year. Green was recovering from a stress fracture in his back in 2024 and decided to go under the knife in October. Cameron Green on Bumrah's special gesture A day before his surgery, Green received a message from Bumrah, who had been through the same injury and surgery. The Australian cricketer said that the gesture meant a lot to him and that he felt better about it. Green added that seeing Bumrah do well in Australia earlier this year after his surgery gave him confidence. 'Jasprit Bumrah reached out the night before I was getting surgery. He was in the middle of a Test match in India. Just a few things like that are really special and makes you feel a lot better about it. To get someone like him to reach out and then to watch him during the summer, to see how good he is obviously post-surgery, filled me with a lot of confidence," Green told the media ahead of the WTC final in London. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Green had spent the 2023 IPL season with the Mumbai Indians while Bumrah was sidelined, recovering from the same procedure. The Indian pace ace had missed the 2022 T20 World Cup but made a remarkable comeback post-surgery, playing a key role in India's run to the 2023 ODI World Cup final and powering the Men in Blue to the T20 World Cup title last year. Bumrah then cemented his red-hot form in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, where he was named Player of the Series after bagging 32 wickets and leading India to their only win in the five-match series. The 26-year-old Green also received encouraging feedback from other bowlers who had undergone similar operations, including Jason Behrendorff and New South Wales pacer Ben Dwarshuis. 'The main reason for (the operation) was to shave down some bone – I've obviously had a bit of trauma in my L4, and extra bone had just developed on that part of the spine,' Green told 'Unplayable Podcast'. 'It forced my spine not to be able to bend as well, and it was probably smashing up against this new bone that wasn't helping it flex. That put a bit too much pressure (on the L4 vertebrae) that I'd actually broken the facet joint on the other side, which was quite rare for a back injury,' he added. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Will Green play in the WTC final? Green is expected to play the WTC Final against South Africa, starting this week, as a specialist batter. He heads to the marquee Test on the back of three centuries in five county cricket matches for Gloucestershire. 'The silver lining to having back injuries is I've got four chances only to be a batter,' he said. 'I felt like my game's always been good around those periods. I'm always going to keep bowling, but you're so much more relaxed [with] half a game to worry about. When you're bowling and batting, there's so much more you have to do bowling wise to keep yourself fit and ready to play. It does take away from batting. So, certainly, just batting is nice.' 'I got exactly what I wanted out of it. To get back playing some professional cricket was exactly what I needed after a few months off .' Before his injury, Green had batted at No 4. but with Steve Smith back at two down, Green might have to bat at No. 3, a position he had only batted once in his first-class career. 'You grow up through your whole career, you speak to anyone here, they've definitely batted in the top three or four throughout their whole junior career,' he said. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD 'I was no different, batting three until you get to first-class cricket. Absolutely no issues batting at three when you've done it your whole life.'
