Hezashocka hunting modern-day history with back-to-back Gosford Gold Cup wins

Co-trainer Michael Kent Jr knows defending champion Hezashocka faces a vastly different challenge in Saturday's Listed $250,000 Gosford Gold Cup (2100m) as his talented stayer chases a 53-year first at Gosford.
Hezashocka won the Gold Cup for the first time last year when the meeting was moved to Newcastle due to a wet forecast with the race staged over 2200m instead.
In 2025 it returns to its traditional home course and distance as Hezashocka chasing a piece of modern-day history in the feature event.
No horse this century has won the Gosford Gold Cup twice with Dark Diamond the last winner of the staying test back-to-back in 1971-71 has a horse.
'We really thought last year the transfer to Newcastle played into his hands being a bigger track, allowing him to gobble up the competition late in the piece and Gosford is a tighter track but he's certainly in great form,' Kent Jr, who trains with Mick Price, said.
'We are happy with the way he is going and he is arguably going as well as ever the horse.
'I thought his run in the JRA Plate was terrific running on.
'The wetter the better for him.'
Hezashocka has had an identical lead-up to the Gosford Cup as he did 12 months ago after running in the Ajax Stakes, Neville Sellwood Stakes and JRA Plate in the lead-up.
He was third in last year's JRA Plate before winning the Cup while finishing runner-up in the same Group 3 behind Bois D'argent this year.

'We have gone with the exact same program and build up,' Kent Jr said.
'He is going great the big boy so it would be no surprise to win this if the race shape works out for him.
'When he won this race last year, we went to Brisbane and he won the Premier's Cup.
'It will depend on that race shape and he will certainly prefer the 2400m on a big track (Eagle Farm) next start.'
Jockey Chad Schofield will get the opportunity to chase consecutive Cups on Hezashocka, which has opened as a $4.60 second elect with the bookies.
A near capacity of 14 runners accepted for the Gosford Gold Cup with Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott set to saddle up New Endeavour ($3.60 favourite) and Les Vampires ($4.60) while Chris Waller has accepted with five contenders, including Scarlet Oak ($15) and Medatsu ($15).
The Listed $500,000 The Coast (1600m) has drawn a capacity field of 14 runners with Depth Of Character and Know Thyself sharing $4.50 favouritism for the feature event.
Les Vampires ($8) was also among the acceptors for The Coast alongside stablemate Townsend ($12).
The Listed $250,000 Takeover Target Stakes field was reduced to 14 runners following the early scratchings of Terra Mater and Need Some Luck.

Sprint sensation Gout Gout's ‘crazy, big-money' sacrifice to stay in Australia

Gout Gout has turned down massive sponsorship offers because they required him to move away from Australia. All of the biggest sporting companies around the globe have come calling for Australia's schoolboy sprint sensation, flashing big-money deals but with strings attached. These included moving overseas to high-end training facilities in places like Jamaica, the home of the world's fastest man Usain Bolt. But Gout's manager James Templeton has repeatedly knocked back the advances, preferring to leave the 17-year-old around his family and current support system with coach Di Sheppard in Ipswich. After breaking Peter Norman's 56-year-old national 200m record in December at the Australian All-Schools Championships, Gout signed one of the biggest deals in Australian athletics history with Adidas. 'JT (Templeton) told me how much they were willing to pay to get me on their side,' Gout told GQ. 'It was crazy. The number kept getting higher and I realised how much these companies think I'm worth. 'But that sponsorship really helps you get to the next level because obviously you need the money to travel and to train. Especially since I'm at school, so I don't need to go and find a job at Maccas or whatever to put fuel in my car. It definitely helps a lot.' Gout, who lives at home with his six brothers and sisters and parents who fled South Sudan 20 years ago, says he hasn't splashed out with any of his new-found riches yet. 'Long term, I'd like to set myself up and set my family up,' he says. 'I've saved a lot and I bought myself a new car when I got my Ps, so that's probably the biggest purchase I've made so far. I haven't gone crazy.' He describes the attention he's received since his breakthrough performances last year as 'crazy'. 'People asking me for photos and things of that nature, it's definitely surreal. It's crazy to think how far I've come. But it's given me perspective to see how far I can actually go, as well.' His next big race is in Europe during the July school holidays where he'll compete in the U/23 Diamond League event in Monaco before setting his sights on the world athletics championships in Tokyo in September.

Tom Harley becomes second club CEO to join new-look AFL executive

Bringing 'club experience' into the AFL was at the core of the league's decision to appoint Sydney chief executive and former Geelong captain Tom Harley the new chief operating officer. Harley, a two-time Geelong premiership captain, is the second club chief executive to join the league's new-look executive after Brisbane Lions boss Gregg Swann was added to AFL chief executive Andrew Dillon's staff. Dillon said the appointment of a COO, his No.2, would help drive the AFL's bold ambitions for growth. 'When we first announced the COO position, we were clear – this was about bringing strong club experience to the AFL's leadership. Tom Harley is the right person to do exactly that.' Dillon said. 'Tom has a deep understanding of the game – from his time as a two-time premiership captain, to leading AFL NSW/ACT, to steering the Swans through a period of significant on- and off-field growth. His ability to lead people, build trust, and drive long-term outcomes is exactly what we need at this moment in our journey and I am thrilled he is joining our executive leadership team.' As COO, Harley will lead the execution of the AFL's strategic and growth plans, drive industry-wide alignment and overseeing major portfolios, including club funding, player CBA, the salary cap and competition structure. Harley said it was a tough decision to leave the Swans, who will conduct a search for his replacement. 'Football has been so good to me, and I have always seen my involvement as a privilege. I'm deeply passionate about our sport and committed to doing whatever I can to support its continued growth,' he said. 'The Sydney Swans has been my home for many years now, and I'm incredibly proud of everything the club has achieved along the way. While wins and losses will always matter, we've never lost sight of our broader purpose – to enrich lives and bring joy to our community. I truly believe we've made a meaningful impact in that space, and I'm confident the club will continue to do so into the future. 'I'm energised by the challenge ahead and excited to keep working to grow our great game.'
