Mr G is back, this time in a podcast. The world has moved on – so why hasn't Chris Lilley?

The Guardian06-05-2025

I f your television career has gone to the dogs, never fear: you can always start your own podcast. This appears to be the logic embraced by Chris Lilley, the once sensationally popular Australian comedian best-known for chameleonic performances in sitcoms such as Summer Heights High and We Can Be Heroes.
Lilley would surely prefer it if his new podcast, Mr G's Room, were a full-blown TV series. But things went awfully quiet in Lilley town following Netflix's decision in 2020 to remove four of his shows from its library in response to a debate about his use of blackface, brownface and yellowface in Summer Heights High, Angry Boys, We Can be Heroes and Jonah from Tonga.
Lunatics is nasty and grotesque. Chris Lilley's career is shot
If that was a nail in the coffin, Mr G's Room reveals Lilley is still inside the pine box, screaming to be heard. His high school drama teacher Greg Gregson, AKA Mr G, who first appeared in Summer Heights High in 2007, now gets his turn at a podcast. And much like Ja'mie King – another famous Lilley creation who also returned in podcast form a few years ago – Mr G feels like a zombie: neither alive nor dead.
The premise of the podcast is that Mr G, a delusional narcissist, has launched a 'tell-all' show to expose how he was 'edited to look bad' and 'manipulated by the producers' of Summer Heights High (a show that, by the way, is almost 20 years old; does anybody still care?). Introducing himself as Australia's leading 'high school drama teacher slash entertainment industry professional' because ha ha, he's delusional, Mr G promises to divulge 'juicy behind-the-scenes goss' and ominously declares he'll be 'making it up as I go along'.
I tried to keep an open mind, I really did. But 13 or so minutes in, when Mr G began his acting 'masterclass' – a terribly unfunny segment about how to put on an American accent – I could feel my cheeks burning in embarrassment as a voice inside me screamed: 'Make it stop!'
There are various aural assaults, including an excruciating theme song (the lyrics: 'Welcome to Mr G's Room, G's Room, G's Room … '), a track from Mr G's production Ikea: The Musical and, in episode two, the equally intolerable There's No Way it's Love Dude. This is a song about a computer who falls in love with a man, which begins with a rhyme that, of course, holds its own against anything by TS Eliot or Bob Dylan: 'I'm sure I turned you off, before I had my shower / Dad said if you're on all night, he'll disconnect the power.'
Comedically, Lilley is insulated. Mr G is supposed to be awful: a hack who believes he's brilliant. But that hardly makes the podcast more enjoyable. Unlike in Lilley's TV shows, there's no other characters to encounter, and thus no reprieve. Summer Heights High has significant issues (including Jonah, a highly problematic Tongan character) – but at the time, at least Lilley's shapeshifting performance really did feel like a dazzling magic trick rollercoastering in and out of skins, forming and reforming realities. But by the time 2019's Lunatics arrived, most of us had had enough. Lilley gave the impression of never learning anything from his many controversies; even then, his shtick was looking more than a little old. skip past newsletter promotion

The $64,000 question is: why? Why did Lilley decide to make Mr G's Room? It's possible he just needs the money (episodes of Mr G's Room are being released first to subscribers who chose to pay $4.99 a month). But while recovering from the two episodes that are available for free so far, a more charitable thought came to me. My mind recalled a New York Times profile of Gerald Murnane, which described the celebrated Australian author's 'Antipodean Archive' – essentially a cabinet drawer filled with invented details about a fictitious horse-racing game and the fictitious countries where it takes place. Murnane never told anybody about it, even his wife: it was an alternate history – an alternate world – just for him.
Perhaps this is what Lilley has spent the last few years doing – imagining his characters' worlds and histories, letting them run wild in his mind and accumulating details. Maybe Mr G's Room is simply a misjudged personal exercise by a person devoted to keeping his creations alive, even when everybody else has moved on. If this is true, perhaps, like Murnane, he should keep them to himself. Lilley was never great at killing his darlings, but his desire to keep his old characters alive through any means possible now feels weird and a little desperate.

Katherine Ryan's husband reveals their children's hilarious reaction to her pregnancy news - as comedian prepares to welcome fourth child

Katherine Ryan 's husband shared a hilarious clip showing the duo telling their children that they are expecting their fourth child. The Canadian comedian, 41, and Bobby Koostra are parents to Fred, three and daughter Fenna, two, while Katherine is mother to 15-year-old Violet from a previous relationship. Celebrating the first early stages of her pregnancy, Bobby took to Instagram to share a playful video of how the children reacted to the big news. Giving a picture of the baby's ultrasound scan, Fenna looked in awe as she quipped: 'There's a baby in your tummy mama'. From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the . View this post on Instagram A post shared by Bobby Kootstra (@bobby_k__) But as the camera panned to her elder sister, Violet, there was a much different reaction as she can been looking stern, shaking her head while crossing her arms. Alongside the clip, Bobby penned: 'Proud to announce the Ryan Kootstras will be getting a new vehicle' And their fans found Violet's reaction hilarious as they gushed over her reaction in the comments. One penned: 'Congratulations. The teens always keep it real here too'; 'Love Violets reaction - congratulations to you all'. 'Violet is so funny congratulations. Glad to see how ecstatic you all are'; 'Always useful to have a teen on hand. Congratulations'. Previously Katherine has been open about her fertility struggles in recent years, revealing in 2024 that she had had three miscarriages in five years. Speaking in November, Katherine explained that she would love to have more kids – but was worried about her age. 'I'm old. I used to think I was going to be the babies' dad because I'm working but actually I'm like their grandmother,' she quipped at the time. And their fans found Violet's reaction hilarious as they gushed over her reaction in the comments 'My back hurts, sometimes I give them treats. I'm like a fun grandma.' The comedian also revealed in March 2025 that she was battling melanoma for the second time. She made the revelation in her podcast, Telling Everybody Everything, explaining she paid to have mole removed from her arm and learned it was cancerous. She added that she required more surgery to ensure the entire mass has been removed. The star is gearing up for another busy period of work, embarking on her Battleaxe comedy tour this month. She also hosts multiple podcasts, including her most recent What's My Age Again? - a 'refreshing and humorous take on ageing, wellness, and self-discovery.' The TV star revealed in 2022 that she had kept her second pregnancy a secret, because she was scared it would lead to her losing work. She was eight months pregnant when she presented ITV's Ready To Mingle, a fact that she hid from everyone. Katherine and her husband Bobby have been together since 2018, but have known each other since they were children as they grew up together in Canada . Childhood sweethearts, the two parted ways initially before rekindling their romance this side of the Atlantic. The couple revealed in the latest series of the family's reality show that they 'wanted the option of having a fourth [child].' The series saw the couple exploring their marriage through therapy before visiting a fertility clinic. Katherine admitted in the scenes which aired in February that she knew conceiving a fourth child would be challenging thanks to both her and Bobby's age. 'It's not that surprising that over-40 women have fewer follicles than we once did,' said Katherine. 'But we talk a lot about male fertility as well, which is on a steep decline. But I would still like a fourth baby. We are so blessed to have the kids that we do have. Having children is not for everyone, but I personally really like making people. I think it's a superpower, if you can do it.' She explained at the time how she and her husband had never previously struggled with getting pregnant but had suffered multiple losses. 'We've always gotten pregnant with the babies quite quickly. I've been pregnant five times in five years, but that also means I've had three miscarriages in five years and the likelihood of that increases as you get older,' she explained. 'You have to find a balance between what you can personally stand and risks you're willing to take. I'm working a lot and I don't know if I could have a medical emergency like that while I'm in Lisbon on Thursday.' Speaking to OK! last year she also ruled out surrogacy, explaining: 'I think surrogacy is wonderful. It's beautiful for people who are really eager to offer it and for couples who need it but for me, I think it would be exploitative.' Appearing on the Chris Moyles Show in November, she admitted: 'I'd have so many more if I could. 'If I was a dad, I'd be like Robert De Niro having them. Because you can have kids when you're 80 as a dad. You just have to.'

Pregnant Sophie Habboo reveals Jamie Laing threatened to LEAVE her over 'unbearable' hormones as she laments her 'enormous t*ts' and caviar cravings in Nearly Parents podcast

Sophie Habboo and Jamie Laing have opened up on their pregnancy journey on the first episode of their newly-branded podcast, Nearly Parents. The former Made In Chelsea stars announced they were expecting their first child in a sweet social media post on Tuesday, after tying the knot in a lavish Spanish wedding in 2023. The couple took to their podcast to tell their fans all about their impeding parenthood for the first time, where Sophie, 30, revealed some of the struggles she'd been dealing with in her pregnancy. She confessed that when her second trimester, she felt like she was 'dying' and was dealing with a lot of hormones that made her frequently feel irritated, quipping: 'This girl has gone from a bit of a b***h to don't come near me.' She explained: 'Up until week eight, I was smooth sailing. No good aversions, no sickness, so much energy, I was like what is every talking about this is unbelievable. From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the Daily Mail's new showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. 'Week eight hit and everyone's starting to grate to me a bit. Like that man sat next to me on the plane breathing, like is it illegal if I punch him in the face? 'If you're a fan of the podcast, I love you so much but you're not going to like me if you meet me at the moment.' Jamie, 36, then admitted to struggling to get his head around Sophie's mood changes with pregnancy, recalling: 'I asked Sophie if she had any cravings and she said, 'No, the only craving I have is hating you'. 'I then spent an evening on Reddit looking at "Why does your wife hate her husband so much when they're pregnant". He went on: 'Sophie is teaching me to drive and I'm a little bit nervous in the car and she goes "You're a s**t driver". I'm literally in my head going "Oh my god she's hasn't eaten this is really scary". 'Sophie then gets so angry she says to me "I'm so angry I want to drive us both into the back of this car and kill us". And then she started crying!' Sophie confessed that the 'anger is uncontrollable' but that it 'was very fleeting' as she lamented how her 'enormous tits' also meant she couldn't fit in any of her clothes. While Jamie then candidly told listeners how he owed her a real apology after not taking her hormones seriously and threatening to leave her over her 'grumpiness'. Sophie said: 'Jamie was like "Oh you're just milking it, you fake all your hormones, there's no such thing". He went "Oh you're just faking all of this." I was like "Oh my god" as I'm lying there with my enormous tits out and I can't fit into a single thing.' Recalling the incident in question, she went on: 'We are leaving and I feel really sick this day and Jamie gets his camera out and goes "I'm going to vlog today". Like on my Sunday that I'm about to vomit all day long. 'And what happened was Jamie sits down and he goes "I'm going to call my friends and ask them what I should do about this. Because I'm going to have to leave you. I'm going to leave you because you're just so unbearable right now."' Jokingly pretending to break down in tears, she went: And I went "You're going to leave me and I'm pregnant".' In defence of his actions, Jamie quickly added: 'The amount of people who are going to call me an a*****e. Just a caveat to add - I had no idea the emotional journey that you go on, how your body changes. 'I just didn't understand the extreme things that go on and since having read stuff on Instagram, I am awe of what you go through. The hormone change is wild.' Showing their Chelsea roots, the couple also revealed that Sophie's worst craving so far was for caviar, recounting how they had dashed round London trying to find a shop that was open at 8pm. Jamie explained they eventually found a caviar store only to discover a single pot cost £240, as he declared: 'I was like "Well that craving has to stop there and then". Sophie revealed that after some Googling, she learned it is recommended that pregnant people avoid the expensive delicacy due to the risks of bacteria and mercury. However, she confessed that the risks were the only thing that stopped her eating it, otherwise would not have allowed the hefty price tag to put her off. She told her husband: 'I was going to give birth and then just be broke and never ever be able to eat again.' Jamie and Sophie also detailed their journey to getting pregnant, gushing how they were 'beyond lucky' to have succeeded on their second try. However, Sophie recalled how getting Jamie to be ready to start trying was 'like drawing blood from a stone', recalling how he 'went green' when she raised the subject. She recalled: 'In fact we went for lunch with my sister and I said as a joke, "Maybe I'm pregnant" because I was a day late on my period. 'We were not trying at this point and Jamie left the restaurant and never came back. Me and my sister were just sat there, and I was like don't worry he'll be having a panic attack.' Jamie defended: 'I was having a mild panic. It was scary for me at this point! You don't understand how scary it is going into this world of having or thinking of having kids.' The Candy Kittens founder also confessed to being uneducated about the topic, saying: 'I honestly thought for my whole life I was walking around with a loaded gun. 'I thought it was easy to get anyone pregnant. I didn't realise that a woman ovulates one day a month.' While he candidly explained he had found it 'complicated to perform' as it was 'so clinical' with Sophie admitting she 'ran a tight ship', when it came to tracking her ovulation. Jamie said: 'I thought I'd get a little drunk, play some Barry White and we canoodle. It's f***ing nothing like that. You get back from a long day and Sophie is standing in the sitting room going "right we've got to go" and it's clockwork. The pair explained they had sex every day for 10 days in a row during their first month trying, with Jamie saying: 'You're basically used as some sort of like funnel, there is nothing sexy about it. Honestly I don't think you took your jumper off once during that period.' He went on: 'Something changed in my head, where my body then closed off. I don't know what happened in my head, something clicked off. And then it became like PTSD in my mind.' Sophie joked: 'I went from a 90 second situation to a 25 minute to 45 minutes every day for 10 days. I was like "Hurry up!"' After succeeding their second time around, Jamie recalled his shock at Sophie telling him she was pregnant. He said: 'I thought I had a good six months to a year of having sex and trying. When you came down and told me I was like "what?" 'When you told me I was purely floating. It's like the most insane moment ever.' The couple delighted fans last week, by sharing the news they were expecting with a clip of Sophie having an ultrasound, captioned with a heart emoji. The joyous announcement came just after Sophie joined Jamie in presenting his Radio 1 drive time show when his co-star Vick Hope left on maternity leave. Vick, 35, who is expecting her first child with DJ Calvin Harris, 41, hosted her last show on the station last week. Back in April, Jamie and Sophie spilled the beans about their future plans on building a family during a chat with The Times. Jamie explained: 'I was really scared about kids. It's something you can't control. Sophie would then carry a baby, all these different things that I can't control and, "Oh God, what happens if this happen or that happens?" 'But I saw a clip on Instagram where someone said, "The best thing I ever had is being called Dad." I was like, "Oh, wouldn't that be cool?" So now I'm so down for it. I would like to have loads.'

Fashion fans are all saying the same thing about bizarre 'distressed' jeans on sale for £40

A pair of jeans that retails at £40 (AU$59.99) has taken the internet by storm - for all the wrong reasons. The 'distressed' jeans, on sale at Australian clothing brand Cotton On, are available in different shades of blue denim but feature the same washed-out dirty look. However, fashion lovers have taken issue with the design of the jeans and say that, rather than looking 'washed out', the trousers instead look like they have been stained with human faeces. Shoppers went into a frenzy when TikToker Adele, who goes by @adelesspammo, posted the clip, racking up a staggering 1.7 million views and tens of thousands of likes. She stumbled upon the jeans while out shopping and immediately took a video, which she captioned: 'What was Cotton On thinking?' The clip shows the pair of blue jeans on a display in-store, stained with suspicious-looking brown dye down the front and back. Adele wrote: 'Someone had an accident', and hundreds of commenters were similarly taken aback by the offbeat styling. The jeans, pictured here as they are advertised online, seem to look more offensive in person, according to commenters One person joked: 'No way people who design stuff like this have a job and I don't.' And another said: 'Yes, because we absolutely want to look like we just had explosive diarrhoea in our jeans…' Many noted the sloppy design choice, which they did not think warranted the £40 price tag. 'So, you're telling me I could have accidentally slipped in mud, put my jeans on that pile, and got money for it,' wrote one incredulous user. Commenters joked that the jeans were 'pre s**t-in' so that lucky wearers don't have to go to the trouble of doing it themselves. One said: 'PRE POOPED JEANS!!! I've been looking for something like this for so long, because it gets sooooo tiring having to do it myself for every outfit.' And another wrote: 'To be fair, walking around with actual s**t on your jeans would be pretty uncomfortable, so this is a better option.' Eagle-eyed fashion fans noticed that the unusual jeans are likely a 'dupe' or an imitation of a similar pair by luxury fashion house Acne Studios. The original 'distressed' jeans are sold by Acne for a whopping £600, and feature similar brown shading around the knees. One mother wrote: 'As if I would be paying money for that when my kids can do that to my clothes and furniture for free.' However, many observed that the version of the jeans advertised online appear much less offensive, and it is the in-person colouring which took them by surprise. 'The worst part is they look completely different online and actually nice. I was shocked when I saw them in the store,' one person commented. Even a former Cotton On employee weighed in, saying: 'I used to work at Cotton On and spent every shift trying not to laugh at some of the s**t we were selling.' One user wrote: 'When I say I want jeans that look a bit dirty this is NOT what I mean.' It seems even would-be customers looking for a more relaxed and dishevelled look are not a fan of Cotton On's latest venture. Fashion Stylist Donny Galella told that such imitations are cropping up more frequently in the fashion world. Incredulous fashion fans rushed to the comments to express their shock at the offbeat design 'Acne is definitely one of the world's hottest brands,' he said. 'And we are living in dupe culture world.' 'But given the cost of living crisis, many people don't have a spare $1400 laying around for a dirty looking pair of jeans, especially for a "trend" style pair of jeans that will have a short shelf life.' FEMAIL has contacted Cotton On for comment.
