Removal Of Service Confirmation Requirement Makes It Easier For Civil Servants To Perform Haj

PUTRAJAYA, Aug 15 (Bernama) -- The removal of the confirmation-in-service requirement for civil servants on permanent appointment to qualify for Haj leave will provide more opportunities for Muslim civil servants to fulfil the fifth pillar of Islam, says Public Service Department (PSD) director-general Tan Sri Wan Ahmad Dahlan Abdul Aziz. He said the move was expected to greatly benefit thousands of civil servants who had registered early to perform the Haj at a young age. 'Previously, the rules stated that only confirmed civil servants were eligible to take leave to perform the Haj. 'Most of them register early (to perform the Haj) and receive an offer three or four years after joining the civil service. This situation would disadvantage those who receive offers, as we know Haj offers take a very long time to come — sometimes requiring a wait of 30 or 40 years,' he said. He told reporters this after attending the 20th edition of the Majlis Amanat Perdana Perkhidmatan Awam (MAPPA XX) programme organised by the PSD in collaboration with the National Institute of Public Administration (INTAN) here today. Earlier, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced several new initiatives to strengthen the civil service, including the removal of the confirmation-in-service requirement for Haj leave. Anwar also announced improvements to the Malaysian Armed Forces (ATM) scheme, the provision of Academic Recognition Awards (HPA) and funding to strengthen INTAN. On the Public Service Talent Development Policy launched by Anwar, Wan Ahmad Dahlan said it reflected the government's commitment to developing competent and competitive civil servants through the implementation of comprehensive and structured talent development initiatives. 'From the time one joins the civil service until retirement, we certainly need competent human capital to carry out duties. This is where talent development is taken into account by the PSD to ensure that civil servants are competent in facing the new world, which now includes the digital era, the era of artificial intelligence (AI) and so on.

Yeoh seeks bankruptcy order against UUM lecturer

KUALA LUMPUR: Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh has initiated bankruptcy proceedings against Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) lecturer Dr Kamarul Zaman Yusoff for failing to settle RM400,000 in damages awarded to her in a defamation lawsuit. Yeoh's lawyer, Sangeet Kaur Deo, confirmed this when contacted today. The Segambut member of parliament's bankruptcy petition against the academician, dated July 9, was published in Utusan Malaysia today. The High Court in May awarded the sum after ruling that Yeoh had proven, on the balance of probabilities, that Kamarul's Facebook posts were defamatory, portraying her as a threat to Islam and as having abused her position to promote Christianity in Malaysia. In a statement, Kamarul said he would appeal the High Court's decision. However, it was learnt that Kamarul failed to apply for a stay of execution against the decision, thus allowing the plaintiff (Yeoh) to seek the award through bankruptcy proceedings. In 2022, Yeoh filed a defamation suit against Kamarul, who served as a special officer to the prime minister from 2021 to 2022, over two Facebook posts uploaded by him in May 2017. The suit was filed for the two posts, including one in which Kamarul cited Yeoh's biography, Becoming Hannah: A Personal Journey, as evidence of her advancing a "Christian agenda".

Preachers Urged To Instil Malaysia MADANI Values, Use Simple Language - Mohd Na'im

PUTRAJAYA, Aug 14 (Bernama) -- Preachers are encouraged to instil noble values embodied in the Malaysia MADANI concept and use language easily understood by their target audience to ensure messages are delivered effectively, says Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Mohd Na'im Mokhtar. He said that with Malaysia currently holding the ASEAN Chairmanship, the universal values in Malaysia MADANI should be expanded throughout the region via the volunteer network of the Annual Informal Meeting of Ministers of Religion of Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore (MABIMS). 'Of course, MABIMS volunteers play an important role as they go to the ground to meet the target audience, so we hope they can use the right techniques or methodologies in preaching so that the message is effectively conveyed to the community. 'We know the values of sustainability, prosperity, respect and compassion — all of these are emphasised in building a MADANI society, and these values are very close to the essence of Islam itself. We aim to embed and convey them (to the community) through MABIMS volunteers,' he told the media after attending the MABIMS Preaching Volunteers Gathering (HISDAM) programme here today. The three-day programme, which began yesterday, was jointly organised by the Yayasan Dakwah Islamiah Malaysia (YADIM), the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (JAKIM) and the Federal Territories Islamic Religious Council, and attended by about 200 volunteers. Mohd Na'im said preachers should also use language that was simple and aligned with local culture so that the message of Islam could be delivered clearly and benefit the target audience. He said that using overly complex language could cause confusion and hinder understanding of Allah's commands. At the event, Mohd Na'im received resolutions adopted during HISDAM from YADIM president Datuk Dr Hasan Bahrom. Among the resolutions were making HISDAM a regular joint programme to gather preaching volunteers from Malaysia, Indonesia, Brunei and Singapore, as well as a platform to strengthen and unite the regional preaching volunteer movement.
