Popular Tai Hang dai pai dong Bing Kee Cha Dong has closed until further notice

Say it isn't so! Bing Kee Cha Dong – an iconic dai pai dong in Tai Han g – announced on its Instagram account last weekend that it is 'taking a long holiday' indefinitely due to staff shortage and lack of manpower. Loved by Hongkongers and tourists alike, the old-school, tin-roofed dai pai dong has been in operation for more than half a century, and is frequently listed in Hong Kong travel guides as a foodie destination, growing its appeal as a social media 'check-in' spot. Bing Kee has a long history stretching all the way back to the 1950s. It first appeared on the scene as a bakery specialising in traditional Chinese pastries before transitioning into a casual dai pai dong serving local, down-to-earth diner fare. Bing Kee's claim to fame is its authentic Hong Kong-style milk tea – it was even ranked by CNN as one of the top four spots in the city for the classic beverage – and the eatery is also notable for its pork chop noodles, Hong Kong-style French toast, and corned beef and egg sandwiches. Hong Kong superstar Eason Chan has been spotted dining at this no-frills diner on Shepherd Street multiple times, and Bing Kee has even been featured on the silver screen in Hong Kong comedy The Romancing Star 2 and mainland Chinese drama The First Frost. Open-air food stalls like Bing Kee are a dying breed in Hong Kong these days, but there are still a handful of them kicking around, including Sing Kee on Stanley Street, Sing Heung Yuen on Mei Lun Street, and Yuk Yip Dessert on Elgin Street, all in Central. If you're keen to venture deeper into the heart of Kowloon, Oi Man Sang in Sham Shui Po is a must-visit for its killer wok hei aromas and irresistible salt-and-pepper squid dish. Fingers crossed that Bing Kee will return from its 'hiatus' sooner rather than later!

Disgraced Prince Andrew joins Charles' Balmoral holiday despite humiliating claims

Disgraced Prince Andrew and his former wife Sarah Ferguson, are said to have travelled to Scotland to join King Charles for the Royal Family's annual summer Balmoral break Prince Andrew and ex-wife Sarah Ferguson have reportedly joined King Charles at Balmoral for the royals' annual summer getaway - despite humiliating claims in a brand new book. ‌ The disgraced Duke of York is said to be staying with Fergie at the seven-bedroom Craigowan Lodge on the Balmoral estate, which was a favourite place to stay of the late Queen's. ‌ It comes after a biography called Entitled: The Rise and Fall of the Yorks' by Andrew Lownie, which hit shelves last week, delved into the private life of Andrew, depicting him as sex obsessed, a "useful idiot" and easy prey for Jeffrey Epstein. ‌ READ MORE: Prince Philip 'whispered four brutal words' to Queen at Harry and Meghan's wedding Meanwhile, research found that the majority of the public would back the removal of his York dukedom, as well as his princely title. At Christmas, Andrew and Fergie stayed away from royal celebrations in Sandringham following the revelation of Andrew's links to an alleged Chinese spy. However, a royal insider told The Sun of Andrew's summer getaway: "The Balmoral invitation is a huge show of support." It is believed Andrew and Fergie are set to be joined by their daughters, Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie, and their children. It comes as it is reported the Prince and Princess of Wales and their three children are set to visit Balmoral, as are the Duke and Duchess of Edinbrugh, Edward and Sophie, and their children. Yesterday, the King officially kicked off his Balmoral visit, where he is expected to stay for three weeks, with a military ceremony. ‌ Charles arrived at the Aberdeenshire castle in his state Bentley and inspected regimental mascot Corporal Cruachan IV, a Shetland pony, as it stood with handler Corporal Rory Stewart as the monarch inspected his Royal Guard. A Guard of Honour was held by Balaklava Company, 5th Battalion The Royal Regiment of Scotland (SCOTS) to officially welcome the King to Balmoral, although he attended a church service there on Sunday in a private capacity. After the ceremony, there was a performance from the Pipes and Drums, formed by soldiers from across the regiment, including from the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th Battalions, in a display of pageantry which was closely linked to this year's Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo. Charles is the Colonel in Chief of The Royal Regiment of Scotland, and wore his relatively new King Charles III tartan, which was designed on the date of his coronation, May 6 2023, and is restricted for the exclusive use of the Royal Family members. The King greeted tourists and holidaymakers from France, the Netherlands and Germany in temperatures which reached 23C.

Father's sinister explanation as he boiled himself to death in huge pot

WARNING, GRAPHIC CONTENT: Lim Ba, 68, suffered a severe heart attack and second-degree burns during the dangerous act inside a large metal pot with a fire underneath A self-proclaimed 'magic man' tragically perished after steaming himself in a bid to 'purify his body and soul'. ‌ In 2017, 'Black Dog' Lim Ba endured a devastating heart attack and second-degree burns during the perilous ritual inside a massive metal pot with flames beneath. ‌ It comes as a father took his own life live on TV as his horrified children watched. ‌ Lim, 68, was carrying out a "human steaming" performance during a Nine Emperor God prayer ceremony at the Chinese temple Kuala Sanglang Qinglong, in Malaysia's Suala Sanglang. Worshippers first suspected trouble when frantic banging from within the blistering "human steam" covering could be heard roughly 30 minutes into the ritual. They quickly lifted the cover to discover him unconscious, reports the Express. Shocking footage shows him writhing uncontrollably as people frantically attempt to drag him from the heat and onto the floor. His arms keep twitching upwards as he's placed down and someone dashes for assistance. ‌ The Taoist medium was declared dead at the location by paramedics. His youngest son, Kang Huai, 32, disclosed his father commenced the steaming ritual around 10pm that evening, reports the Mirror. He revealed his father was taking medication for high blood pressure and those watching knew when to lift the cover. ‌ He told Malaysia's The Star: "By the time the ambulance arrived, my father had stopped breathing. He underwent a heart bypass last year due to on-and-off breathing difficulties." Despite constant appeals to cease, Lim had been conducting the human-steaming performance for more than a decade - once remaining inside for 75 minutes. During a performance at a Nine Emperor Gods celebration in Ayer Tawar, Perak, Kang Huai disclosed that food items such as rice, sweet corn, and vegetarian buns were also placed inside the wok for steaming. ‌ "My mother Ch'ng Siew Hong, my sisters and I are very sad. Our cheerful father has left us forever," he said. Lim's daughter Wei Ling, 37, revealed her father had moaned about the sweltering conditions en route to the stunt and had gone off his food. Lim was acknowledged as a Taoist medium, following the ancient Chinese faith which encourages living in balance with the Tao. The Federation of Taoist Associations of Malaysia (FTAM) president Tan Hoe Chioew explained that these kinds of ceremonies weren't truly part of conventional Taoist practices but were more similar to a fa shu (theurgy or magic) display. He went on to clarify that such stunts were carried out to draw in followers and showcase the performer's physical stamina.
