Steel Dynamics shares down after Q2 earnings miss

Yahoo21-07-2025
Investing.com -- Steel Dynamics posted second-quarter earnings below Wall Street expectations amid lingering trade policy uncertainty and an inventory overhang in coated flat rolled steel pressured shipments.
The company reported earnings per share of $2.01, missing the consensus estimate of $2.26. Revenue fell to $4.6 billion, also short of the expected $4.73 billion.
Despite the miss, CEO Mark Millett said steel pricing stabilized at higher levels during the quarter, helping drive a 39% sequential improvement in consolidated operating income and a 19% gain in adjusted EBITDA. The margin expansion was led by stronger performance in the company's long products operations.
However, customer hesitancy due to unsettled trade policy and excess inventory weighed on volumes. 'This hesitancy, combined with an inventory overhang of coated flat rolled steel, resulted in lower steel and steel fabrication shipments,' Millett said in the release.
The company also reaffirmed its long-term growth outlook, citing expansion into value-added steel and aluminum flat rolled products.
Shares of Steel Dynamics (NASDAQ:STLD) were down more than 3% at $137 in aftermarket trading. YTD, down about 10%.

Trump on Pelosi's Investments: 'INSIDE INFORMATION,' 'Is Anybody Looking Into This?'

President Donald Trump has leveled allegations against Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and her husband Paul Pelosi, accusing them of leveraging insider information for stock market profits. What Happened: Trump took to his Truth Social platform on Saturday to voice his criticism of the Pelosis' stock market activities. He referred to Nancy Pelosi as a 'disgusting degenerate' and hinted that the couple's stock market success was a result of insider information. 'Crooked Nancy Pelosi, and her very 'interesting' husband, beat every Hedge Fund in 2024. In other words, these two very average 'minds' beat ALL of the Super Geniuses on Wall Street, thousands of them. It's all INSIDE INFORMATION! Is anybody looking into this???' Trump wrote. Trump's remarks follow Pelosi's recent backing of Senator Josh Hawley's (R-MO) bill, now dubbed the HONEST Act. The proposed law seeks to ban members of Congress, the president, and the vice president from trading stocks. Also Read: Marjorie Taylor Greene's Palantir Bet Has Skyrocketed 142% Since She Bought It Pelosi, who has often been under fire for her profitable stock portfolio, expressed that 'the American people deserve confidence that their elected leaders are serving the public interest — not their personal portfolios.' Just last week, Pelosi dismissed any allegations regarding her stock trading as 'ridiculous' during an interview on CNN's The Lead. Why It Matters: The allegations by Trump add fuel to the ongoing debate about the involvement of political figures in stock trading. The endorsement of the HONEST Act by Pelosi, who herself has been a subject of criticism for her stock market gains, signifies a shift in the stance of political leaders towards stricter regulations. However, the dismissal of the allegations by Pelosi indicates the complexity and sensitivity of the issue. As the debate continues, the outcome could have significant implications for the intersection of politics and finance. Formerly known as Advanced Plastic Services, APS has been a provider of industrial equipment and solutions for the semiconductor, solar, and oil and gas industries for over two decades. The acquisition of APS, which closed on July 31, marks the first investment for Provest. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. 'APS represents exactly the type of high-potential industrial platform we set out to acquire when we launched Provest Equity Partners,' said Suhas Uppalapati, founder and managing partner at Provest, in a press release. 'With the global demand for semiconductor and energy sectors accelerating, we see tremendous opportunity to invest in APS's next phase of growth, leveraging our operational experience and long-term vision.' ATLANTA (AP) — A Delta Air Lines plane clipped another aircraft while pushing back from the gate Sunday morning in Atlanta, the airline said. The wing of the plane 'reportedly made contact' with an empty aircraft, Delta said in a brief written statement to The Associated Press. The flight was scheduled to travel from Atlanta to Guatemala City, according to FlightAware, a website that tracks flight disruptions. Passengers were transferred to another plane following a delay. On board the commercial aircraft were 192 customers, two pilots and four flight attendants. No injuries were reported, according to Delta, which has its headquarters in Atlanta.
