MACC's apology insincere, says family of Teoh Beng Hock

The Star3 days ago
PETALING JAYA: The family of Teoh Beng Hock says they do not accept the apology from the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) regarding his death.
Beng Hock's sister, Lee Lan said the family viewed the apology as insincere because no action has been taken against the officers involved.
"The family feels slighted over the insincerity of the apology by the MACC. They said that they are apologising because they see our pain but they are not surrendering the five officers that we believed were involved. This apology is not sincere because there was no further action taken on them.
"Their offer for a contribution is also shameful because we do not want money, we want the truth," she said at a press conference at the Kuala Lumpur and Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall here on Wednesday (July 16).
Earlier, chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki said MACC apologised to Beng Hock's family for the ordeal that they went through.
"I wish to express my deepest sympathies and extend an apology to the family of the late Teoh Beng Hock for the pain and suffering they have endured over the years.
"The MACC also acknowledges that, on May 12, 2015, the government paid RM600,000 in compensation to the family along with an additional RM60,000 in legal costs as a full and final settlement under Sections 7 and 8 of the Civil Law Act 1956.
"Nevertheless, as a gesture of compassion, the MACC is prepared to provide a goodwill contribution to the late Teoh's family for the purpose of supporting the welfare and educational needs of his child," he said.
He added that reforms were being conducted even though insufficient evidence to charge any suspects was found in lieu of the most recent investigation into the death.
Teoh Beng Hock was found dead on July 16, 2009, at Plaza Masalam in Shah Alam after giving a statement at the Selangor MACC office.

Teoh family reciprocates DAP leaders' bow, thanks supporters

The family of Teoh Beng Hock and members of the Teoh Beng Hock Association for Democratic Advancement bowing at a public memorial to Teoh Beng Hock organised by the association. KUALA LUMPUR : The family of the late Teoh Beng Hock bowed tonight in response to a public apology by DAP leaders on Thursday. Beng Hock's parents, sister Lee Lan and members of the Teoh Beng Hock Association for Democratic Advancement (TBH-ADA) lined up and bowed at a public memorial organised by the association. 'We, the family of Teoh Beng Hock, and the TBH-ADA will return a bow of courtesy. 'We bow to every individual, every organisation, every party and person who have stood with us in this long struggle. 'We thank you for your unwavering solidarity. We believe your support was granted not in pity or charity, but in a shared expectation of justice,' said an emcee. The memorial marks the 16th anniversary of Beng Hock's death. On Thursday, DAP leaders bowed in 'respect and sorrow' to the family, acknowledging they had been let down by investigations into the former political aide's death. DAP secretary-general Loke Siew Fook, vice-chairman Teo Nie Ching, Selangor DAP chief Ng Sze Han and Teoh's former boss, Ean Yong Hian Wah, bowed for about a minute at the end of a press conference at DAP's headquarters. The day before, Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief Azam Baki apologised to the family and said the agency was prepared to provide them with a goodwill contribution. Beng Hock, who was 30, was found dead on July 16, 2009 after falling from the fifth floor of Plaza Masalam in Shah Alam, Selangor, after being questioned for several hours by officers at the Selangor MACC headquarters. An inquest into his death initially returned an open verdict. However, in 2014, the Court of Appeal ruled that the death was caused by 'one or more unknown persons', including MACC officers. In May, former inspector-general of police Razarudin Husain confirmed that the investigation paper on Beng Hock's death was classified as needing no further action, after the Attorney-General's Chambers said it found insufficient evidence to bring charges.

Disabled baker scammed of over RM500k in fake Tiktok job offer

GEORGE TOWN: A disabled baker in Penang has lost more than RM500,000 after falling for a bogus job offer advertised on TikTok, according to acting state police chief Datuk Mohd Alwi Zainal Abidin. He said the incident began in early December last year when the 45-year-old man was first contacted via WhatsApp in early December last year by a woman who claimed to offer a lucrative job selling children's toys through the platform. "He was promised profits of 10 to 15 per cent and was asked to make payments to cover the cost of goods allegedly ordered by customers," he said in a statement on Saturday (July 19) night. The victim proceeded to make 41 cash deposit transactions amounting to RM523,350 into five different bank accounts between Dec 18, 2024, and July 14 this year. Despite repeated payments, the promised returns never materialised, and the suspect continued requesting additional funds under the guise of job-related expenses. The victim lodged a report on Friday (July 18) at the Timur Laut district police headquarters (IPD) upon realising he had been scammed, with the case being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating. - Bernama
