OPEN// FM intensifies diplomatic efforts to de-escalate regional tensions

Middle East2 days ago
CAIRO, July 18 (MENA) - Minister of Foreign Affairs, Emigration, and Expatriates Badr Abdelatty continued his intensive diplomatic efforts aimed at de-escalating regional tensions.
As part of these efforts, Abdelatty held separate consultations with UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi, and Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Rafael Grossi.
Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Tamim Khallaf said on Friday that the discussions focused on advancing efforts to secure a durable ceasefire between Iran and Israel, avert a resurgence of hostilities, and strengthen political and diplomatic channels for conflict settlement.
The talks also examined prospects for reviving negotiations between Iran, the IAEA, and the E3 group, with a view to reinvigorating diplomatic engagement and addressing persisting concerns over Iran's nuclear program, the spokesman said.
This comes as the anticipated date to activate the UN sanctions mechanism draws near, expected within the next few weeks, according to announcements from the E3 countries, the spokesman added.
During his call with UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy, Abdelatty discussed prospects for enhancing bilateral relations, particularly in the areas of trade, investment, and tourism, he added.
In a separate conversation with the IAEA Director General, discussions focused on strengthening cooperation between Egypt and the agency in the peaceful applications of nuclear energy. (MENA)

Iran says replaced air defence systems damaged during Israel war - Region

Iran has replaced the air defence systems damaged during its 12-day war with Israel last month, a senior army general said on Sunday according to state media. Israel launched an unprecedented surprise bombing campaign against Iran in mid-June, prompting Tehran to respond with drone and missile attacks. Israel's strikes dealt a significant blow to the Islamic republic's air defences, which were repeatedly activated in the capital Tehran and across the country throughout the war. "The Zionist enemy sought to destroy Iran's defense capabilities, and some of our defense systems were damaged in that war," army operations chief Mahmoud Mousavi was quoted as saying by the official IRNA news agency. "The damaged defence systems have now been replaced," he added. Iran's air defence network includes systems like the domestically built Bavar-373 and Khordad-15, designed to counter missiles and aircraft. Iran also installed Russia's S-300 air defense systems in 2016. The war with Israel killed more than 1,000 people in Iran, while Iranian fire killed at least 28 people in Israel, according to authorities in each country. Israel's attacks targeted military infrastructure and nuclear facilities across Iran. On June 22, Israel's ally the United States also carried out unprecedented strikes on Iranian nuclear sites at Fordo, Isfahan and Natanz. The full extent of the damage to Iran's nuclear programme remains unclear. US President Donald Trump has insisted the sites were "completely destroyed", but US media reports have cast doubt on the severity of the damage. On Friday, NBC News, citing a military damage assessment, reported that only one of the three sites was mostly destroyed. A ceasefire between Iran and Israel has been in effect since June 24. After the truce was announced, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed to prevent Iran from rebuilding its nuclear capabilities, raising the prospect of renewed conflict. Earlier in July, Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz said Israel was formulating a plan to "ensure that Iran cannot threaten Israel again." Katz said the military had to maintain its "air superiority over Tehran, the ability to enforce restrictions on Iran and prevent it from rebuilding its capabilities". European powers plan fresh nuclear talks with Iran this week: German diplomatic source - Region

Britain, France and Germany are planning to hold fresh talks with Iran on its nuclear programme in the coming days, a German diplomatic source told AFP on Sunday. The European powers, known as the E3, "are in contact with Iran to schedule further talks for the coming week", the source said, following warnings from the trio that international sanctions against Iran could be reactivated if Tehran does not resume negotiations. Iran's Tasnim news agency also reported that Tehran had agreed to hold talks with the three European countries, citing an unnamed source. Consultations are ongoing regarding a date and location for the talks, the report said. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi held a call Friday with his British, French and German counterparts and European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas. During the call, the Europeans warned that if Iran did not return to talks soon, they would activate a so-called "snapback" mechanism to reimpose sanctions lifted in a 2015 deal to curb Tehran's nuclear output. Iran and the United States had held several rounds of nuclear negotiations through Omani mediators before Israel launched its 12-day war against Iran on June 13. However, US President Donald Trump's decision to join Israel in striking Iranian nuclear facilities effectively ended the talks. "Iran must never be allowed to acquire a nuclear weapon. That is why Germany, France and the United Kingdom are continuing to work intensively in the E3 format to find a sustainable and verifiable diplomatic solution to the Iranian nuclear programme," the German source said. Iran denies it is pursuing nuclear weapons. The 2015 deal between Iran and world powers, called the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), placed significant restrictions on Tehran's nuclear programme in exchange for sanctions relief. But the hard-won deal began to unravel in 2018, during Trump's first presidency, when the United States walked away from it and reimposed sanctions on Iran. "If no solution is reached over the summer, snapback remains an option for the E3," the German source said. Follow us on: Facebook Instagram Whatsapp Short link:
