Kota Kinabalu: Some 500kg of consumer plastic waste was collected during the Alliance Bank Borneo International Marathon 2025, thanks to a green initiative led by the Malaysian Plastics Manufacturers Association (MPMA) Sabah branch. Held last Sunday (May 5) at the Likas Sports Complex, the annual international charity event attracted around 8,000 runners participating in the 42km, 21km, and 10km categories. As part of its 'Don't Be A Litterbug' campaign, the MPMA Sabah Branch mobilised 70 volunteers from its member companies to collect used plastic beverage bottles and other waste along the marathon routes. 'This year, we managed to collect 500kg of plastic bottles and non-recyclable waste like paper and wrappers. 'All bottles were sent to a recycling centre where they'll be given a second life as sustainable packaging products,' said MPMA Sabah Branch Chairman Liaw Hen Kong. Designated recycling bins were placed strategically along the race route to ensure plastic waste was properly sorted and not contaminated by general trash. A recycling station was also set up near the finish line to demonstrate the crushing, compacting and baling process to the public. The initiative builds on the success of last year's campaign, which saw 400kg of plastic waste collected from 6,000 runners. The increase in both runner participation and volume of recycled waste highlights growing public awareness and commitment to sustainability. The campaign, held in collaboration with the Kinabalu Running Club and Datuk Dr Heng Aik Cheng, who is also Race Director of the marathon, aimed not just to create a litter-free event but to promote a culture of responsible waste disposal and recycling among the public. With runners from 49 countries, the campaign also supported Sabah's image as a green tourism destination. The initiative is part of MPMA's ongoing nationwide effort to reduce plastic pollution and promote recycling through its four branches across Malaysia. Participating MPMA Sabah Branch member companies included. Life Water Industries Sdn Bhd, HKT Furniture Sdn Bhd, Uniang Plastic Industries Sdn Bhd, Stellar Plastik Sdn Bhd, Eiffel Plastic Sdn Bhd and Lok Kawi Plastic Industries Sdn Bhd. * Follow us on Instagram and join our Telegram and/or WhatsApp channel(s) for the latest news you don't want to miss. * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Plea to government to upgrade 6.8km Beaufort stretch
Published on: Tuesday, August 12, 2025 Published on: Tue, Aug 12, 2025 By: Ahmad Apong Text Size: Deteriorating condition: Residents urged the authorities to expedite upgrade of the road in question. BEAUFORT: Residents of Kampung Binunuk here urged the Government to upgrade a 6.8-kilometre stretch that was previously approved for an allocation of RM32 million, but has yet to be implemented. Resident, Ajip Usop, said he was made to understand a contractor had already been appointed for the road upgrade but years have passed without any visible sign of work being carried out. Advertisement 'A contractor came to survey the road, claiming they had secured the project. But to this day, we've never seen them return. It has been years,' he said. Ajip added that the road frequently floods, making it impassable and worsening its already deteriorating condition, riddled with potholes. He stressed that the upgrade should be expedited. 'The Public Works Department (JKR) must implement this project as soon as possible, for the comfort and safety of Kampung Binunuk residents,' he said. According to him, speaking through Daily Express is the only way to highlight their plight to the authorities, as previous appeals had been ignored by elected leaders. 'Just look at the condition of this road, how are we supposed to use it? It's full of potholes everywhere. Even vehicles owned by villagers are damaged,' he lamented. He pointed out that although the road is only 6.8 kilometres long, it has been neglected since independence, forcing the local community to continue using it out of necessity. 'Pity our children who have to walk through mud just to get to school. The same goes for our senior citizens and expectant mothers who need to get to hospital for treatment,' he said. Ajip added that many residents still use the muddy road on a daily basis, but questioned why the Government continues to overlook their suffering. 'People still brave this road, even in poor conditions. Does the Government not care about the residents who have no choice but to use it every day?' During the monsoon season, he said, the road becomes severely damaged and even cuts off access to town, making it hard for villagers to buy food and essential supplies. In emergencies, he added, damaged roads could delay the arrival of fire and rescue teams, putting lives and property at even greater risk. 'It would be in the best interest of everyone if the Government upgrades this road to ensure safer and easier access for all residents,' he said. Ajip appealed to Lumadan Assemblyman Datuk Ruslan Muharam, who is also Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister and Sipitang Member of Parliament Datuk Matbali Musah to take this issue seriously. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Museum preserves legacy of Mat Salleh's right-hand man
Published on: Tuesday, August 12, 2025 Published on: Tue, Aug 12, 2025 Text Size: Maximillian briefs on what was once a site of the fort. TAMBUNAN: Kota Mat Sator, an old hidden fort in the district, stands as proof of the ingenuity of local warriors in resisting British forces in the early 1900s. Located 400 metres from Kota Mat Salleh in Tibabar, the fort was named after Mat Salleh's right-hand man, Mat Sator, who was entrusted with managing and guarding it. Advertisement Kota Mat Sator Museum curator Maxmillian Stanis Takong said the fort once served as the residence of Mat Salleh's wife, Dayang Bandang, who was believed to have mystical powers to turn corn kernels into hornets, a skill said to have helped defend the stronghold. Mat Sator, he said, fought alongside Mat Salleh against the British. After the fort's fall, he and about 400 followers attacked a British fort in Kudat and captured the area. 'The museum was set up to honour a warrior rarely mentioned in history. 'Although the fort was destroyed, Mat Sator managed to escape with his followers,' he said. Since its opening in 2016, the museum has become a reminder of Mat Sator's role in Tambunan's history. Maxmillian received a certificate of appreciation from Deputy Chief Minister I Datuk Seri Jeffery Kitingan during a Kembara Merdeka Jalur Gemilang (KMJG) convoy visit in conjunction with National Month. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Also present were Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Mohd Na'im Mokhtar, Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor and State Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Datuk Dr Mohd Arifin Mohd Arif. At the same time, Musa reminded the graduates that their success was not solely the result of their own efforts, but also the sacrifices of their parents, lecturers and fellow students who worked hard to provide moral and material support. He also expressed his satisfaction at the rapid progress achieved by IPDAS, both in physical infrastructure and academic development, which has contributed to a more comfortable and conducive campus environment. He said the hard work and sacrifices of parents in supporting their children's success stem from the belief that, at the end of their efforts, lie priceless blessings and honour. 'Highest appreciation and congratulations to the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (Jakim) for their unwavering commitment to supporting the development of IPDAS and upholding the image of Islam in Sabah as a whole,' he said. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
