Earthquake jolts New York City, New Jersey; memes flood social media

Hindustan Times4 days ago
Residents across New York and New Jersey experienced light tremors late Saturday night as a small earthquake struck the region. Earthquake memes flooded social media after a minor quake struck New Jersey
According to the U.S. Geological Survey, a magnitude 3.0 earthquake hit at 10:18 p.m. with its epicenter in Hasbrouck Heights, New Jersey — a suburb located just under eight miles west of Central Park and north of Newark. The tremor occurred at a depth of approximately 6.2 miles (10 kilometers).
Tremors were reported across all five boroughs of New York City, according to a USGS map. In Brooklyn, one resident described the experience as 'a very brief tremor, just a slight swaying for a moment.'
Nevertheless, social media lit up with posts from New Jersey and New York City residents who felt the tremors. The minor earthquake led to memes flooding social platforms like X.

Several people ran to X to check whether others experienced the tremors too
The tremor was much milder than a 4.8-magnitude quake in 2024 that struck in Tewksbury, New Jersey, a little farther west of the city.
A 3.0 earthquake is typically not strong enough to cause any damage, but tremors that mild are somewhat rare in the Northeast.
New York City Emergency Management said there were no immediate reports of major impacts.

Frances biggest wildfire of summer eclipsed size of Paris, still spreading

Paris, Aug 6 (AP) France's biggest wildfire this summer was spreading quickly Wednesday in a Mediterranean region near the Spanish border after leaving one person dead, authorities said. About 2,000 firefighters and several water bomber aircraft battled the blaze that broke out Tuesday afternoon in the village of Ribaute in the Aude region, a rural, wooded area that is home to wineries. The wildfire remained 'very active" on Wednesday and weather conditions were unfavourable, the local administration said in a statement. One person died in their home, nine others were injured, including seven firefighters, and at least one person was missing, the statement said. The interior ministry said the fire had spread over 13,000 hectares (32,000 acres), an area larger than the French capital. Jacques Piraux, mayor of the village of Jonquières, said all residents have been evacuated. 'It's a scene of sadness and desolation," he told broadcaster BFM TV after he visited Wednesday morning to assess the damage. 'It looks like a lunar landscape, everything is burned. More than half or three-quarters of the village has burned down. It's hellish." Residents and tourists in nearby areas were requested to remain in their homes unless told to evacuate by firefighters. Two campsites were evacuated as a precaution. Last month, a wildfire that reached the southern port of Marseille, France's second-largest city, left around 300 people injured. Southern Europe has seen multiple large fires this summer. Scientists warn that climate change is exacerbating the frequency and intensity of heat and dryness, making the region more vulnerable to wildfires. Europe is the world's fastest-warming continent, with temperatures increasing at twice the speed of the global average since the 1980s, according to the European Union's Copernicus Climate Change Service.(AP) RD RD view comments First Published: August 06, 2025, 19:00 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Wildfire in southern France kills 1, injures several

Agency: PTI Last Updated: Paris, Aug 6 (AP) A fast-moving wildfire in a Mediterranean region of France near the Spanish border has left one person dead, several others injured and was still spreading Wednesday after damaging a swath of land as big as Paris overnight, authorities said. About 1,500 firefighters worked overnight to contain the blaze, which broke out Tuesday afternoon in the village of Ribaute in the Aude region. It remained 'very active" on Wednesday and weather conditions were unfavourable, the local administration said in a statement. One person died in their home and nine others were injured, and at least one person was missing, the statement said. It said the fire had spread for 12 hours over 11,000 hectares of land, which is roughly equivalent to the size of the French capital. That makes it the biggest wildfire in France so far this summer. Europe is the world's fastest-warming continent, with temperatures increasing at twice the speed of the global average since the 1980s, according to the European Union's Copernicus Climate Change Service.
