In a year when there were four $100 million-plus auteur-driven movies — one of which, Bong Joon Ho's Mickey 17, recently misfired — Warners Bros distribution has taken the pressure off the studios' schedule in that regard, and even placed a potential tentpole into the year: Zach Cregger's anticipated genre movie on August 8.

Cregger's next movie after Barbarian was previously scheduled for MLK weekend 2026, on January 16. What kept Warners from moving the pic starring Josh Brolin, Julia Garner and Alden Ehrenreich was that the theatrical release was tied to Imax screens — can't give up those auditoriums. In fact, what made all of the release-date changes feasible for Warners was that each was tied to Imax bookings. As one insider called the release shifts revealed Wednesday, 'we lifted and shifted.'
Weapons will go toe-to-toe with Disney's female-skewing sequel Freakier Friday.
The Weapons move pushes Paul Thomas Anderson's priciest movie of his career, the Leonardo DiCaprio action comedy One Battle After Another, from August 8 to September 26 (which is where Maggie Gyllenhaal's The Bride! was).
It was out there in the ether that the PTA movie, which also stars Sean Penn, Benicio Del Toro and Regina Hall, would move; it just wasn't clear to where. What makes this date special is that Warners will not only have access to Imax hubs but also select theaters that play 70mm and VistaVision. Brady Corbet's 3x Oscar-winning The Brutalist shot in VistaVision.
It's TBD if the PTA movie gets a fall film festival launch. Word is that it's not always his preference to launch that way, but he's done it before: His 2014 movie Inherent Vice (also a Warners release) premiered at the New York Film Festival, while 2012's The Master world premiered at Venice. PTA's latest, which reportedly costs around $140M, will now release opposite Lionsgate's Saw XI and Universal's Gabby's Dollhouse: The Movie.
The Bride! now will go on March 6, 2026, putting the genre movie in a month that has been primed for tentpoles, i.e., Legendary/Warner Bros' Dune: Part Two, A24's Everything Everywhere All at Once, Warner Bros' The Batman, and Kong: Skull Island and Godzilla vs. Kong. This was the movie that Warners saved after Netflix passed on the project.
Warner Bros Pictures Animation's The Cat in the Hat, from directors Alessandro Carloni and Erica Rivinoja, now rolls up one week from March 6, 2026 to February 27, 2026. That's a week before Disney/Pixar's Hoppers debuts on March 6. Also, the new date for Cat in Hat gives the family feature an advantage with some promotional opportunities overseas. Now Cat in the Hat, with a voice cast including Bill Hader, Quinta Brunson, Bowen Yang, Xochitl Gomez, Matt Berry and Paula Pell, will share the marquee with Paramount/Spyglass' Scream 7.
Meanwhile, David Robert Mitchell's sci-fi movie Flowervale Street starring Anne Hathaway and Ewan McGregor goes from March 13, 2026 to August 14, 2026. The studio believes it's a commercial movie and has snapped up a better date to take advantage of last-minute summer audiences. Flowervale Street stands alone currently as the sole major-studio wide entry.

Thelma Schoonmaker on Martin Scorsese's 'Remarkable' Bond With Michael Powell and Using AI to Help Publish Her Late Husband's Diaries
Three-time Oscar winner and longtime Martin Scorsese collaborator Thelma Schoonmaker was the star of an Edinburgh International Film Festival event on Sunday, where she spoke about the life and work of her late husband, Michael Powell. Schoonmaker has worked on a whopping 22 of Scorsese's films across her decades-spanning career, picking up Academy Awards for Raging Bull (1981), The Aviator (2005) and The Departed (2007). She met Powell through Scorsese, whose reverence for the partnership between Powell and fellow English filmmaker Emeric Pressburger led to the pair becoming close friends. Scorsese became influential in helping to restore Powell's films and was a major advocate for the recognition of his brilliance. 'Scorsese had been bringing Michael to America. … He said, 'You love his films. Would you like to meet him?' And I said, 'Oh, yes, I would.' So I had dinner with Marty and Michael, and it was astounding, because Michael, even his face was so interesting. He didn't say much, but when he said something, it was very powerful. Nobody ever expected us to get married.' The pair were married from 1984 until Powell's death aged 84 in 1990. Among his and Pressburger's best-known movies are The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp (1943), I Know Where I'm Going! (1945) and The Red Shoes (1948). Schoonmaker became visibly emotional when discussing her husband's relationship with Scorsese. 'When Michael died, not one British director came to his funeral,' she said. 'Bernardo Bertolucci came, and Martin Scorsese flew across the Atlantic to be there and throw the first clump of dirt on Michael's grave. Their friendship was remarkable.' She recalls Powell coming to her one day and telling her: 'Marty's really upset 'cause he can't sell Goodfellas.' 'Can you imagine — he can't sell Goodfellas?' she continued. 'And the studios were saying to him: 'You have to take the drugs out.' And [Scorsese] said, 'The story of Goodfellas is the drugs. I can't take it out.' So Michael said to me, 'Read me the script.' I read the script to him on Sunday. … And he said, 'Get Marty on phone.' And I did. He said, 'Marty, you have to make this movie. It's the best script I've read in 20 years. You have to make it.' So Marty went in and somehow convinced Warner Bros. to make it.' Schoonmaker also confirmed she's still working on publishing Powell's diaries — some of them detailing his foray into theater directing — and is using AI to help. 'We're using AI with the diaries. … We have people read the diary from Michael's handwriting, because publishers want to see it in print, not handwriting,' she explained. 'It takes a lot of people to do it, and I have very dear friends who I can trust. He actually wrote the diaries for his mother, which is so interesting, and he's got a lot about his personal life with his family that I will remove because he didn't want his diaries published. So I will only publish some things that are relevant to film history.' The acclaimed film editor also went into some depth about the bumps in Powell and Pressburger's relationship. 'Emeric was much more aware of how bad the British film industry was and how are they going to survive it,' she explained, 'and he was willing to try and find a way to do that. But Michael was sticking to his feelings, and they went through a period of 20 years of total oblivion where nobody even knew who they were anymore,' she said, adding that Michael became 'quite broke.' Schoonmaker expertly and candidly fielded a myriad of questions about Powell's childhood, his acclimation to New York, how he inspired her editing and even when the pair fell in love. 'I don't think Marty actually was [too happy],' she laughed, 'because then he had to split his devotion to Michael and me. And you know, if I said, 'I have to go home and make dinner for Michael.' He had to say yes. But he loved having him around. He loved having him on the set.' She also spoke about her own career, navigating her way into the film industry and becoming friends with Scorsese. At the heart of the conversation, however, was Powell. She said about her favorite memories of him: 'I think just his love of life. What affected him every day was the weather, the light outside, the window, what he was cooking. He just knew how to get the best out of everything. And that was a great joy to live with.' ‘Weapons' maintains top spot on weekend box office ahead of newcomer ‘Nobody 2'
LOS ANGELES — 'Weapons' scared its way to the top of the box office in its debut and managed to stay there during its second weekend, beating out 'Freakier Friday' and newcomer 'Nobody 2.' Zach Cregger's horror film earned $25 million in 3,450 North American theaters, a 43% drop from its first weekend. The highly anticipated film benefited from strong audience reviews and social media trends to attract large crowds. 'Freakier Friday,' which lost the battle for first place to 'Weapons' during its double premiere, maintained its second spot, bringing in $14.5 million domestically. Ian McKellen reveals Gandalf and Frodo to return for 'The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum'
The new installment in the sprawling fantasy franchise, to be directed by original Gollum actor Andy Serkis, will commence production in May, McKellen says. Back to Middle-earth, post haste! Old friends are waiting. Ian McKellen, the legendary actor behind Gandalf the Grey in the original Lord of the Rings film trilogy, dropped a bombshell bit of casting news over the weekend. "I hear there's going to be another movie based in Middle-earth, and it's going to start filming in May. It's going to be directed by Gollum, and it's all about Gollum," McKellen teased at the For the Love of Fantasy fan event in London on Sunday. Last year, original LOTR helmer Peter Jackson was announced as producing a new live-action installment in The Lord of the Rings franchise with Gollum actor Andy Serkis directing and starring in the new film that was slated for a 2026 release at the time. The film is now expected in December 2027. McKellen then shocked the audience with new details. "I'll tell you two secrets about the casting: There's a character in the movie called Frodo, and there's a character in the movie called Gandalf," he said. Smiling to himself as the crowd gasped in amazement, McKellen joked, "Apart from that, my lips are sealed!" Entertainment Weekly has reached out to a representative for Warner Bros. for in the day, Warner Bros. Discovery CEO and President David Zaslav discussed Serkis' film during the company's quarterly earnings call. Zaslav noted that The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum joins the likes of upcoming Batman, Superman, and Harry Potter projects at the top of the studio's priority list. Though McKellen did not specifically say whether he and original Frodo Baggins star Elijah Wood would reprise their roles in the film, Wood was present at the fan event, smiling conspiratorially as McKellen spoke alongside fellow LOTR alums Sean Astin, Dominic Monaghan, Billy Boyd, and John Rhys-Davies. Since the original Lord of the Rings film trilogy wrapped up in 2003 with the Oscar-winning The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, McKellen, Wood, and Jackson all returned to Middle-earth with the Hobbit trilogy, which unspooled between 2012 and 2014. Jackson was not involved in Amazon's The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power series, but last year he produced the franchise's first animated foray into the works of J.R.R. Tolkein, The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim. Jackson was joined on the project by Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens, both producers on the original film trilogy who are also on board The Hunt for Gollum. In June, Serkis told Collider, "We're very early on in the process. We've been talking about the film over the course of the last year. We're about to start a period of prep in the next few months or so. We will be shooting in the early to mid-part of next year, I guess, and then it'll be as long as it takes to shoot, which — it's a sizable movie — all ready for a December 2027 release."
