Google hires Windsurf CEO and researchers to advance AI ambitions

Time of India12-07-2025
Alphabet's Google has hired several key staff members from AI code generation startup
Windsurf
, a Google spokesperson said on Friday, in a surprise move following an attempt by its rival OpenAI to acquire the startup.
Windsurf CEO Varun Mohan, co-founder Douglas Chen, and select members of the coding tool's research and development team will join Google's DeepMind artificial intelligence division, the Google spokesperson said.
The former Windsurf team will focus on agentic coding initiatives at Google DeepMind, primarily working on the
Gemini project
.
ChatGPT maker OpenAI was in talks to buy Windsurf, one of the hottest startups disrupting software development, sources familiar with the matter told Reuters in June.
OpenAI could not immediately be reached for a comment.
"We're excited to welcome some top
AI coding talent
from Windsurf's team to Google DeepMind to advance our work in agentic coding," the Google spokesperson said.
As part of the deal, the search engine giant is entering a non-exclusive license for certain Windsurf technology, according to a source familiar with the matter. Google will not take a stake in Windsurf, the person said.
Windsurf investors will receive liquidity as part of the deal, sources told Reuters.
Google's surprise swoop mirrors a deal in August 2024 to hire key employees from chatbot startup Character.AI.
Big Tech peers, including Microsoft, Amazon and Meta, have similarly taken to these so-called acquihire deals, which some have criticized as an attempt to evade regulatory scrutiny.
Microsoft struck a $650 million deal with Inflection AI in March 2024, to use the AI startup's models and hire its staff, while Amazon hired AI firm Adept's co-founders and some of its team last June.
Meta took a 49% stake in Scale AI in June in the biggest test yet of this increasing form of business partnerships.
Unlike acquisitions that would give the buyer a controlling stake, these deals do not require a review by U.S. antitrust regulators. However, they could probe the deal if they believe it was structured to avoid those requirements or harm competition.
Many of the deals have since become the subject of regulatory probes.
The development comes as tech giants, including Alphabet and Meta, aggressively chase high-profile acquisitions and offer multi-million-dollar pay packages to attract top talent in the race to lead the next wave of AI.
Windsurf's head of business, Jeff Wang, has been appointed its interim CEO, and Graham Moreno, vice president of global sales, will be president, effective immediately.
The majority of Windsurf's roughly 250 employees will remain with the company, which has announced plans to prioritize innovation for its enterprise clients.

Don't panic, but act fast: Perplexity CEO on skills needed not just to survive AI job crisis but also thrive in career

Shift Focus from Scrolling to Skill-Building The Pace of Change Is Unforgiving Entrepreneurship as a Safety Net As artificial intelligence continues to advance at an accelerated pace, it is reshaping the global workforce and sparking concerns about widespread job displacement. Industry leaders have weighed in on how AI could eliminate traditional roles, especially in white-collar sectors. Among them, Perplexity AI CEO Aravind Srinivas is urging individuals—particularly young professionals—to move beyond panic and instead focus on adapting swiftly. In a recent conversation with Matthew Berman, he shared insights on the kind of skills and mindset needed not just to survive this transition, but to build a successful career in an AI-driven offered a blunt recommendation to the younger generation: spend less time mindlessly scrolling through social media and more time learning how to use AI tools . He emphasized that those who become proficient with these technologies will gain a strong advantage in the job market , as the gap between AI users and non-users noted that individuals at the forefront of AI adoption will be significantly more employable than those who resist or delay learning. His message was clear—embracing AI is now critical for career Perplexity CEO also acknowledged the immense challenge posed by the speed at which AI is developing. With major advancements occurring every few months, he pointed out that this pace is testing human adaptability like never warned that those unable to keep up risk being pushed out of the workforce. This concern aligns with statements from other tech leaders such as Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic, who predicted AI could eliminate half of entry-level white-collar jobs in the next five years. AI pioneer Geoffrey Hinton has also cautioned that artificial intelligence may soon take over much of the routine intellectual labor currently done by acknowledging the threat of job loss, Srinivas sees entrepreneurship as a viable path forward. He suggested that those affected by AI-driven changes could either start their own ventures using AI or join emerging companies that embrace these his view, the traditional employment model may shrink, but opportunities will emerge for those who can use AI strategically. He believes the next wave of job creation will come not from large corporations, but from smaller, nimble ventures led by individuals who understand how to integrate AI into their outlook is shared in part by others in the tech world who believe that AI won't just destroy jobs—it will redefine them. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang has argued that AI will enhance human capabilities and allow people to focus on higher-value this optimistic take, Srinivas emphasized the urgency of the moment. He encouraged people to act quickly—not out of fear, but with a sense of responsibility for their own future. Mastering AI, he suggested, will soon be as fundamental as knowing how to use a computer.

Baby Grok: Elon Musk's xAI plans to launch child-friendly AI app soon

Tech billionaire Elon Musk has announced that his AI firm xAI is planning to launch a child-friendly version of chatbot Grok. The app, named 'Baby Grok', is likely to build upon Grok's capabilities, but with stricter safeguards and curated content to suit younger audiences. "We're going to make Baby Grok @xAI, an app dedicated to kid-friendly content," Musk said in an X post on Sunday (IST). The move signals Musk's intention to expand AI usage into the domain of child education and entertainment, while addressing growing concerns about children's exposure to AI. Moving away from controversies Musk's announcement of a new app could help the company pivot away from the recent controversies, especially when it comes to protecting young users. Ahead of the curve A child-friendly version could also give the chatbot a competitive edge, as most rivals are yet to launch dedicated apps for youngsters. Grok competes with the likes of OpenAI's ChatGPT and Google's Gemini. Recently, the chatbot has been more deeply integrated into Musk's social network platform X, where it publicly engages with users. Expanding domains Earlier this month, xAI also unveiled 'Grok for Government', an initiative aimed at developing AI solutions tailored for US government agencies. The project focuses on creating intelligent, agentic workflows to support various administrative and security functions. According to media reports, xAI stated that the program will bring its advanced AI capabilities to federal, local, state, and national security customers, signalling the firm's growing interest in public sector partnerships. New updates On July 9, xAI released its latest version of the AI chatbot -- Grok 4. According to xAI, Grok 4 is the most intelligent AI model in the world. Grok 4 includes native tool use and real-time search integration, the company said. We utilised Colossus, our 200,000 GPU cluster, to run reinforcement learning training that refines Grok's reasoning abilities at pretraining scale, the firm added.

EV push: Honda eyes 30% share in Indian two-wheeler market by 2030; sees big potential among female buyers

Representative image (AP) Japanese auto major Honda is aiming to capture a 30 per cent share in India's two-wheeler market by 2030 as part of its broader global strategy to command half of global two-wheeler sales, said Tsutsumu Otani, President of Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India (HMSI). "Considering the Indian market size, we want to achieve 30 per cent share in India by 2030," Otani was quoted as saying by news agency PTI, underlining the country's critical role in the company's long-term growth blueprint. HMSI currently holds a 27 per cent share in India's two-wheeler segment. Honda sees India as a key growth engine, particularly in the context of female consumers, who account for only around 10 per cent of total two-wheeler sales. Otani said, 'In India, the overall two-wheeler usage is mostly male, with 90 per cent, and females just around 10 per cent. It means the potential for two-wheeler sales to grow among the female customers is huge.' While the company is optimistic about the eventual transition from internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles to electric two-wheelers in India, Otani flagged infrastructure as a challenge. 'In the long term, the shift will happen, but currently, bottlenecks around charging infrastructure and electricity supplies are major impediments,' he stated. Globally, Honda aims to increase motorcycle sales from 50 million units to 60 million units by 2030, including electric models. The company plans to introduce 30 electric models by 2030, targeting annual sales of 4 million electric units worldwide. It also aims to secure the largest market share in India's electric two-wheeler segment and is planning to set up a dedicated EV production plant in the country by 2028. However, Otani clarified that the location and investment details for the facility are yet to be finalised. As per PTI, HMSI sold 47,89,283 units in FY25, up from 40,93,895 in FY24. It remains the second-largest player after Hero MotoCorp, which sold over 54 lakh units last fiscal. Stay informed with the latest business news, updates on bank holidays and public holidays .
