'Exceptional' war film directed by A-lister and everyone needs to watch

Cinema buffs have been praising Angelina Jolie's 2014 film, Unbroken, since its release, and they're gobsmacked to discover that the Hollywood icon directed it.
Unbroken is an Oscar-nominated cinematic gem that brings to life the true tale of a World War II legend. With Jack O'Connell taking the lead in his major breakout performance and under Jolie's direction, it's hardly shocking that people are 'highly recommending' this flick.
According to one critic on Rotten Tomatoes: "This film is as accurate and immersive as a historical film can get. Angelina Jolie did a fantastic job both casting and directing this film. Everything from the acting to the sets is absolutely phenomenal!".
The movie chronicles the resilient saga of Louis Zamperini, a former American Olympian turned lieutenant in the United States Army Air Forces. The storyline follows him as he survives a harrowing plane crash into the sea, where he and two crew members are marooned on a raft for an excruciating 47 days.
After an arduous ordeal, Zamperini ends up on the Japanese Marshall Islands and is captured, becoming a prisoner of war. Throughout his captivity, the former athlete withstands forced labour and brutal beatings at a camp until the end of the war, lasting nearly two years, reports the Express.
One person said: "Unbroken is a captivating film that masterfully depicts the physical torture endured by its characters while also delving into the psychological toll of their experiences. The acting is exceptional, and the movie strikes a powerful balance between brutality and resilience."
Louis Zamperini himself was involved in the production of 'Unbroken' before he passed away in 2014 at the age of 97, just a few months shy of the film's premiere. The following year, it went on to bag three Academy Award nods for its standout cinematography, sound editing, and sound mixing.
"It's an intriguing take on a war story, and one I find myself returning to again and again. A solid film that I'd highly recommend to anyone who appreciates war dramas with depth," touted another satisfied movie-goer.
With the famous Angelina Jolie at the helm, expectations were sky-high for the film to perform well, especially as she had only stepped into the director's shoes a few years earlier. "I would've never guessed that Angelina Jolie did directing work either!" exclaimed someone, praising her efforts by adding "She did a terrific job!".
The shining light in 'Unbroken', however, is Jack O'Connell, who takes on the role of Louis Zamperini. His portrayal has been hailed as a "powerful performance" by fans, and his stellar acting nabbed him the 'New Hollywood Award' at the Hollywood Film Awards, propelling him forward as a front-runner in the acting world.
A touched telly fan shared: "What a powerful true story of perseverance in the face of seemingly impossible obstacles and abuse. Seeing this reminded me how good I have it in my life and how I have no room to complain about anything."
Unbroken can be rented on both Amazon Prime and Apple TV.

Ireland's contender for the International Feature Film Oscar award has been selected

THE IRISH FILM and Television Academy (IFTA) has selected its entry to vy for a chance of being nominated for the International Feature Film category at the 2026 Oscars. Sanatorium, created by Irish filmmakers in the Ukrainian language, is set at a wellness centre in southern Ukraine near the frontlines of the war. It's been described as an 'incredibly unique and wryly humorous film'. Irish films have had some good luck in the international category at the Oscars in recent years; An Cailín Ciúin was nominated in 2023 and the Kneecap film was shortlisted in 2025. The Oscar International Feature Film category is a specific category for films produced in a language other than English. Each country can enter one film into the category in the hopes of becoming one of the nominated films. Films sent by Ireland are usually in Irish, but have also included movies in other languages in the past, including Viva (Spanish, Oscar shortlisted in 2006), In The Shadow of Beirut (Arabic, 2024), Gaza (Arabic, 2019) and As If I Am Not There (Serbo Croatian, 2011). Advertisement EclipsePicturesIE / YouTube The IFTA said that Sanatorium is a 'vividly cinematic real-life observation of a community searching for love, healing and happiness within the confines of a wellness centre near Odesa in southern Ukraine'. The film has 'colourful characters', with staff and visitors who are 'determined to have a holiday away from the outside world, a moment in their lives to 'restore' themselves despite the war, with curious treatments including a mysterious black mud, said to cure infertility, physical disabilities and various other ailments'. It was directed by Galway-born filmmaker Gar O'Rourke and produced by Venom Films by IFTA-winning Ken Wardrop and Andrew Freedman (His & Hers, Making the Grade), along with Samantha Corr. It was co-produced by 2332 Films Ukraine and made with support from Screen Ireland, BBC Storyville, MetFilm Sales, France TV, and Creative Europe. The film was edited by John Murphy, the editor of An Cailín Ciúin, with Denys Melnyk (Militantropos) as director of photography. It had its world premiere in Copenhagen in late March and is due to be shown in Irish cinemas in September. Readers like you are keeping these stories free for everyone... Ukrainian-language feature film to represent Ireland at next year's Oscars

The Irish Film and Television Academy (IFTA) announced that Sanatorium will follow in the footsteps of Oscar-nominated An Caitlín Ciúin in 2023 and Kneecap from this year by competing in the International Feature Film category. It was directed by Galway-born filmmaker Gar O'Rourke and produced by Venom Films by IFTA-winning Ken Wardrop and Andrew Freedman. The film documents a small colourful group's quest for normality and respite in a wellness centre in the southern Ukrainian port city of Odesa as war rages around the country. Participants gather in a Soviet-era building to undergo mud treatments using black mud that is said to cure infertility and physical disabilities. Sanatorium was selected by IFTA's 2025 Selection Committee which consists of prominent Irish filmmakers from several previously Oscar-nominated films. IFTA chief executive Áine Moriarty has said that the film will resonate with audiences around the world. "What an intriguing and quietly powerful film, with its vibrant and visually stunning scenery and colourful cast of real-life characters who find escapism within the confines of an unconventional wellness centre in Ukraine,' she said. "It is so inspiring to see an Irish Director and creative team collaborate with Ukrainian colleagues to capture these moments in time.' The film's director Gar O'Rourke said that the film has been received very well by audiences since its release. 'Since the premiere of Sanatorium earlier this year, the international response has been overwhelming. "This was a film that set out to show the power of healing, the resilience of community, and above all the strength of the Ukrainian spirit in the face of such traumatic times.' Its producers Andrew Freedman, Ken Wardrop and Samantha Corr highlighted the importance of the film's display of 'extraordinary humanity', despite the horrors of war. This is not the first time a foreign-language film been chosen to wave the Irish flag in Hollywood – Spanish-language film Viva was shortlisted in 2006, as well as the Arabic-language films Gaza in 2019 and The Shadow of Beirut in 2024.

Horror last moments of father who boiled himself to death in huge pot

A self-proclaimed 'magic man' tragically died after steaming himself in a bid to 'purify his body and soul'. In 2017, 'Black Dog' Lim Ba suffered a fatal heart attack and second-degree burns during the perilous ritual inside a large metal pot with flames beneath. It comes as a father took his own life, live on TV, as his devastated children watched at home. Lim, 68, was carrying out a "human steaming" performance during a Nine Emperor God prayer ceremony at the Chinese temple Kuala Sanglang Qinglong, in Malaysia's Suala Sanglang. Worshippers first suspected trouble when frantic banging from within the searing "human steam" cover could be heard roughly 30 minutes into the performance. They quickly lifted the cover to discover him unconscious, reports the Express. Horrifying footage shows Lim Ba convulsing uncontrollably (Image: Youtube) Disturbing footage shows him shaking violently as people frantically attempt to drag him from the heat and place him on the floor. His arms keep jerking upwards as he's positioned down and someone dashes for assistance. The Taoist medium was declared dead at the location by paramedics. His youngest son, Kang Huai, 32, disclosed his father had started the steaming performance around 10pm that evening, reports the Mirror. He said his father was taking medication for hypertension and those watching knew when to lift the cover. He told Malaysia's The Star: "By the time the ambulance arrived, my father had stopped breathing. He underwent a heart bypass last year due to on-and-off breathing difficulties." Horrifying footage shows Lim Ba convulsing uncontrollably (Image: Youtube) Despite constant appeals to cease, Lim had been carrying out the human-steaming performance for more than a decade - once remaining inside for 75 minutes. During a show at a Nine Emperor Gods festival in Ayer Tawar, Perak, Kang Huai disclosed that food items including rice, sweet corn, and vegetarian buns were also positioned inside the wok for steaming. "My mother Ch'ng Siew Hong, my sisters and I are very sad. Our cheerful father has left us forever," he said. Lim's daughter Wei Ling, 37, revealed her father had moaned about the heat whilst travelling to the stunt and had lost his appetite. Lim was known as a Taoist medium, following the traditional Chinese faith which encourages living in balance with the Tao. The Federation of Taoist Associations of Malaysia (FTAM) president Tan Hoe Chioew said that these kinds of ceremonies weren't truly part of mainstream Taoist practices but were more similar to a fa shu (theurgy or magic) display. He added that such stunts were carried out to draw followers and showcase the performer's physical stamina.
