MIRI (June 6): Dog owners are urged not to let their pets roam freely outside their homes for the safety of the animals and the well-being of the community.
Deputy Mayor Councillor Ariffin Mohamad issued the reminder during Miri City Council's (MCC) monthly Meet-the-People Session (MTPS) held at Krokop Market today (June 6).
'We have received complaints about stray dogs as well as pet dogs that have been roaming freely.
'We want to urge all dog owners to take responsibility for their pets. With the current concerns surrounding rabies, we are adopting a stricter stance. Any dog found roaming, whether stray or owned, will be put down,' he stressed.
He added that complaints on dogs roaming freely were among the issues raised during MTPS.
During the one hour session, MCC received a total of 17 complaints, with seven of them being issues concerning drains, overgrown grass, damaged roads, dirty market toilets, faulty streetlights and illegal hawkers.
These cases will be handled by MCC's Public Health Section, Public Maintenance and Cleanliness Section, Enforcement Section and Parking Section.
Ariffin stated that all the complaints will be referred to the relevant departments and sections within MCC for action.
'If there are complaints outside of MCC's jurisdiction, we will contact the relevant agencies. For instance, not all grass cutting works fall under MCC's jurisdiction. Some areas fall under the Public Works Department (JKR), thus we will contact JKR to take action,' he explained.
Commenting on the monthly MTPS initiative, Ariffin described it as a valuable platform for residents to voice their concerns directly to MCC representatives.
The session is held on the first Friday of each month at selected locations across the city. Ariffin Mohamad free-roaming pets Miri City Council rabies stray dogs

Sri Lanka foils synthetic cannabis smuggling attempts

COLOMBO: Sri Lankan authorities have seized nearly 60kg of potent synthetic cannabis that foreigners tried to smuggle in this month in three separate cases, a customs official said today. The South Asian island has long been considered a transit point for international drug smugglers, and all three suspects -- from Britain, India and Thailand -- could face life imprisonment if convicted. The 21-year-old British woman was arrested on May 12, with customs officers saying she was stopped with 46kg of kush -- a synthetic drug containing powerful opioids -- packed in two suitcases. "This could be the biggest drug bust at the Colombo airport in recent times," said Customs additional director-general Seevali Arukgoda. British media reports have identified the woman as Charlotte May Lee, a former cabin crew member from London, who had flown to Sri Lanka from Thailand. She is being held in detention at a prison near Colombo airport. The BBC reported that she denied knowledge of drugs in her luggage, and claimed they were planted at her hotel in Bangkok. On May 16, a 33-year-old Indian man was arrested at the northern seaport of Kankesanthurai. Arukgoda said that he had been carrying 4kg of kush. He too has been handed over to the anti-narcotics police for further investigations. On May 18, a 21-year-old Thai man was stopped at Colombo airport, who is accused of attempting to smuggle in nearly 8kg of kush. Sri Lankan authorities have previously seized large quantities of heroin off its shores, saying it suggested the island is being used as a transit hub for narcotics being reshipped onward. In October, a Sri Lankan court sentenced 10 Iranian men to life imprisonment after they pleaded guilty to smuggling more than 111kg of heroin. The men were among 17 arrested in Sri Lankan waters in April 2016 while transporting narcotics aboard an Iranian trawler. In 2023, nine Iranians received life sentences in a separate drug smuggling case.

JKR urged to boost safety at accident-prone Senawang junction

SEREMBAN: The Negeri Sembilan Public Works Department (JKR) has been urged to implement additional safety measures at the Matahari Height traffic light junction along Persiaran Senawang 1, near here, where four people were killed in accidents in the past two months. State Local Government Development, Housing and Transport Committee chairman J. Arul Kumar said his office had discussed with JKR the best approach to get road users to slow down at the location. 'Among the suggestions discussed were the installation of early warning lights before the junction and additional signage to indicate an accident-prone area to alert road users to be more cautious,' he told Bernama here today. Arul, who also chairs the state-level Road Safety Council, said that while the authorities can enhance safety measures at the location, all road users should play their part by driving responsibly. He stressed that driving behaviour and driver attitude play a critical role, and thus compliance with traffic laws, especially stopping at red lights, must be prioritised. Arul said drivers found guilty of running red lights and causing accidents should face appropriate penalties. Meanwhile, Paroi state assemblyman Kamarul Ridzuan Md Zain suggested that, to reduce the risk of accidents at the location, authorities could paint thick yellow lines or install road studs to help slow vehicles down. 'With such safety elements in place, road users will be more cautious and won't be able to speed recklessly,' he said. A 20-year-old man was killed when the motorcycle he was riding was hit by a van that allegedly failed to stop at the Matahari Height traffic light junction at about midnight last Saturday. A similar incident occurred in March when three motorcyclists were killed after being hit by a Honda Jazz that reportedly ran a red light at the same location.
