Queen Mary rarely puts a foot wrong - but can you spot why her latest outfit has every royal watcher talking?

Daily Mail5 days ago

Queen Mary of Denmark rarely sets a foot wrong when it comes to her personal style.
But a daring sartorial choice made by the Danish Queen while attending last week's Global Fashion Summit in Copenhagen has caught the attention of style watchers for all the wrong reasons.
The Australian-born Queen, 53, nixed her usual uniform of chic flowing blouses or statement designer dresses to try something a little different for the summit held at the DR Concert Hall.
The mother-of-four made a bold fashion choice by stepping out in grey Bermuda shorts and a matching blazer, which was cinched at the waist with a Zimmerman two-tone braided belt.
The royal completed the risk-taking look with light brown suede heels from Gianvito Rossi.
The Global Fashion Summit, presented by Global Fashion Agenda, undoubtedly attracts a fashion forward crowd, which could perhaps explain why Queen Mary pushed the boundaries outside her usual signature style wheelhouse.
But eagle-eyed style pundits believe that a myriad of fashion faux pas were committed by the Danish Queen, resulting in a look that's been described as a 'rare miss'.
For the latest fashion event, Mary re-wore a matching grey blazer and culotte pant ensemble, designed by Copenhagen-based fashion house Mark Kenly Domino Tan.
The royal only recently wore the same blazer and pants in April during a state visit to Paris.
On that occasion, the royal was praised for the chic look, which saw the grey two-piece paired with Aquazzura over-the-knee stiletto boots, a high neck black top and a delightful brooch pinned to the jacket.
At the time, VOGUE Scandanavia heralded Mary's outfit choice as a 'slightly edgier look while maintaining her signature royal elegance'.
So why did the exact same base outfit go awry during Mary's most recent royal appearance?
The biggest gripe amongst style watchers was the unflattering cut, colour and mid-leg length of the culotte trousers.
One comment in response to a royal fashion news outlet's post read: 'Queen Mary rarely makes a fashion misstep but this outfit is one. She needs to burn the culottes and give the jacket a chance with something else.'
Another weighed in: 'Even though Queen Mary can wear just about anything, it doesn't mean she should. No love for these culottes. The jacket is very smart.'
'Queen Mary generally makes great fashion choices but this is a fail. The colour is insipid, the culottes are just wrong. The shoes are the only positive for me,' added a third.
When Mary wore the same mid-length pants in Paris, their supposed unflattering elements was perhaps more prominent when styled with tall boots instead of heels.
The other fashion sin pertaining to the grey culottes were the unmissable wrinkles.
'Not one of her finest choices. Look at all the wrinkles in that material!' one royal watcher said in response to a Daily Mail article about the outing.
'The proportions of the shorts and stilettos don't work and it's so wrinkled. Looks as though she got it out of the laundry basket. A mistake,' added a second style commenter.
'Missed the mark this time. Outfit makes her look stocky and crinkled,' said a third.
Another responder, who claimed to be a textiles salesperson, blamed the actual suit 'material' for badly letting the royal down, explaining that it 'wrinkles horribly no matter how long you iron it before wearing it'.
Beyond the complaints about the pants, other royal fashion fans were not on board with the way the outfit had been styled and accessorised – in particular the chunky light brown and white belt.
This styling was in stark contrast to how Mary minimally and neutrally accessorised the same suit outfit in Paris, including keeping the jacket's original matching linen belt.
A comment on royal fashion news blog questioned the 'pairing [of] camel accessories with grey'. They said: 'It does lift the grey a little but I find it unusual'.
A more blunt statement was made by a royal fan on Daily Mail's own article, declaring: 'NEVER grey and brown together'.
Overall, the general consensus from royal style watchers fans was disappointment that the normally stylish Queen had such 'a big miss'.
'Mary has great taste and is the most consistently well-dressed royal lady in my view. But this is a big miss. I´m trying to find positives but honestly can´t think of much,' surmised one commenter on the New My Royal fashion post.
'I always like Mary's outfits but not this one. It just doesn't have any charm to it,' another royal watcher said.
'She's always so classy looking but that outfit is an epic fail,' one added.
'Nope doesn't do anything for her and I usually like everything she wears,' agreed another.
Mary wore the divisive outfit while attending the 2025 Global Fashion Summit, which drives the global conversation on sustainability in fashion, bringing together brands, retailers, material and tech innovators, and policymakers.
On arrival Mary, was greeted at the event by Federica Marchionni, CEO of Global Fashion Agenda, and Alice Roberta Taylor, Chief of Staff.
The royal later had the chance to chat with other industry leaders to discuss the topic of sustainability in fashion.
During her visit, Mary explored various stands at the fair and was given a tour of the venue.
The three-day fashion event took place in and around Copenhagen, which is a city respected for its trendy street style and minimalist designs.

Love Island SPOILER: Bombshell dates rip couples apart as the girls secretly watch what their men REALLY think

The three new bombshells have certainly ruffled a few feathers as their dates with the boys looks set to rip couples apart. In Sunday nights episode, Meg and Helena are set to go head to head with Dejon and Harry after watching their true intensions on the TV screen. For the first time in worldwide Love Island history, the girls watched exactly what the boys get up to as it happens - and the lads had no idea. After the boys and new bombshells Emily, Malisha and Yasmin returned to the villa, Meg and Helena had some stern words for their men. Meg pulls Dejon over for a chat and insists 'You failed the test... I'm not here to play games', after he got close with Malisha. But Dejon feels some of Meg's jealous comments aren't warranted and is later seen laughing at the mini Firepit with new love-interest Malisha. Meg quips: 'I don't think I've ever seen D laugh so much'. Meg's behaviour sparks Dejon to tall the boys: 'If she [Meg] is still coming at me with the same energy then it's done…' When Dejon and Malisha continue their chats upstairs in the Hideaway, Meg follows hoping to steal him for a chat and could be seen earwigging their conversation. As the night goes on, Helena has some choice words for Harry about what he said during the boys chat. After watching Harry crack on with the bombshells, Helena tells Harry: 'I dunno where we go from here…I don't know how we can move forward…' As day dawned in the villa, Harry got a text, saying: 'Boys, clear your schedules and get ready to leave the villa! #brotime #beersandbants.' The lads were ecstatic, excited for the boys' night ahead - but the evening was not without fun for the girls either. Walking into the garden, they were stunned to see a massive screen, allowing them to hear exactly what their partners were saying about them. But Dejon feels some of Meg's jealous comments aren't warranted and is later seen laughing at the mini Firepit with new love-interest Malisha Meg's behaviour sparks Dejon to tall the boys: 'If she [Meg] is still coming at me with the same energy then it's done…' After watching Harry crack on with the bombshells, Helena tells Harry: 'I dunno where we go from here…I don't know how we can move forward…' As they gradually worked out the nature of the set-up, seeing and hearing the boys talking on the enormous screen, an astonished Meg said: 'F*** off!' Alima added: 'We'll get to see how they act!' What's worse is the lads' hangout was soon interrupted by three brand new bombshell girls - Emily, Malisha and Yasmin. Megan shouted, 'There's three of them!', as Harry, on-screen, asked the newbies: 'Are you coming back with us?' Malisha replied: 'Of course I am!' The new ladies wasted no time getting to know the boys, with Yasmin saying: 'Tell us what your situation is in the villa at the moment.' With the lads blissfully ignorant of the fact they were being watched, they did not hold back with their answers. Malisha, 24, a teaching assistant from Broxbourne, Hertfordshire, has a very clear idea of the kind of guy she is looking for: 'A tall, dark, handsome man. 'He has to be very tall. I'm 5ft7/5ft8. I want to be able to wear heels and feel feminine. He has to be funny, but not too funny; I have to be the funniest. 'I want someone that's caring and a bit loving, but then I like someone that can give me a bit of rude banter. I like to be a bit cheeky. 'I like nice teeth. Someone who's calm, but not too nonchalant. Someone that's really loving and is all about me. 'They need to know what they want. I like a determined man who is like, "I want you and I'm coming for you".' The bombshell is determined to find love in the villa: 'If I want it, I'm going to get it. I always get what I want. I'm an only child, so of course I'm going to get what I want.' Commercial banking executive Yasmin, 24, from London, does not have quite so many requirements, sharing: 'I'm looking for a guy who is fit, has a nice body and who is funny with a bit of banter.' Meanwhile, she is immediately put off by any man who is 'stingy'. Yasmin has many self-professed strengths to offer: 'Flirting. I'd definitely say it's all in the eyes.' And, more unusually: 'I can make a really realistic cat sound...' Emily, 24, an insurance development executive from Aberdare, Wales, has a clear vision for her time on the Island: 'Someone with emotional intelligence for one. 'Someone who is really confident but not cocky. They can hold a room, communicate… oh, and biceps!' She is ultimately looking for a real sweetheart, adding: 'I want someone who is just really genuine and kind. I know that sounds so naff, but it's hard to find these days. 'I'd also like a man who genuinely cares about my wellbeing and my feelings and wants to look after me.' Love Island continues Sunday at 9pm on ITV2 and ITVX. First Aftersun episode follows. Forgotten Love Island stars who returned to their day jobs after leaving the villa from a roofer to estate agent

FOR many hopefuls stepping into the Love Island villa, the ultimate prize isn't just romance, but a golden ticket to lasting fame and fortune. However, life after Majorca often proves far different - with influencer freebies and big-money brand deals quickly fading for most contestants. 19 As a result, fans are beginning to see former Islanders return to their pre-villa careers. For many, the stability of a regular job outweighs the fleeting glitz and glamour of reality telly. Here, The Sun takes a look at those who've chosen a normal job over the pursuit of fame. Billy Brown 19 19 Fans of the hit ITV2 dating show saw Billy Brown enter the TV villa back in 2022. The hunk was one of the bombshells to arrive during Love Island 's infamous Casar Amor week. Unfortunately for Billy his time was short-lived and he was dumped from the villa two weeks after his arrival. Two years on, Billy has now revealed he's back working his old job as a roofer. Now 24, he took to social media to share an update with fans on a construction site as he wrote "pushing on". He continued on camera: "Another day, doing the house. "Have a look, pushing on now, the floor joints are going how it's looking from above. "Next stage is the floor and then the top steels." The hunk is also on top of his fitness and regularly posts snaps of him playing football to his 117,000 followers on Instagram. Hugo Hammond Hugo Hammond, 28, first shot to prominence when he competed in the seventh series of Love Island. He appeared on the long-running dating show in 2021 where he was dumped from the villa after 38 days on the show. But three years following his television stint, the star made a huge personal announcement. The former reality contestant announced that he is joining property development company Pearcroft Developments. His new firm specialises in building environmentally friendly luxury homes that provide sustainable living. Hugo took to social media to announce his new personal news and career move. He was beaming as he posed in a sleek grey kitchen, dressed in a navy polo top with complementary trousers. The star wrote: "There we land. After a whirlwind few years consisting of teaching, TV and travel. "I'm Excited to announce that i will be joining the @pearcroft developments investment team, where i will be continuing to build my network and driving sustainable development. Hugo added: "If you want to know more about #greeninvesting and #sustainableliving, drop me a message." Munveer Jabbal His failure to find love in the villa last summer proved to be a blessing in disguise. In a series that was dominated by Joey Essex's surprise arrival, Munveer's screen time was limited - culminating in a dumping on day 10. Not long after the show, Munveer returned to his work in recruitment, specifically the tech sector, which he now has a decade of experience in. But having had a taste of the Love Island life, he's craving more time in the public eye. "I've had a taste for it now and I feel like where I had it just taken away from me ever so quickly," he says. "I feel like I've got so much more to offer. I loved it. So if there's more opportunities out there, like your Made In Chelsea, The Traitors or wherever it is, I'm definitely up for it." Dr Alex George 19 Dr Alex appeared on Love Island back in 2018. He failed to find love on the show, after coupling up with Samira Mighty, Ellie Brown and Alexandra Cane. Before the ITV2 show he was an A&E doctor and after Love Island he continued to work at Lewisham Hospital. The star worked on the frontline during the Covid pandemic between 2020 and 2021. Since his stint on the programme, Alex has done plenty of work for mental health charities, after his brother Llyr committed suicide when he was 19. Alex is also the UK Youth Mental Health Ambassador within the Department for Education. He's also appeared on TV shows such as Good Morning Britain and Lorraine to talk about the important topics. Georgia Townend 19 Georgia was a bombshell during the ninths series of Love Island in 2021. The beauty only lasted a day in the villa and failed to win of the heart of Hugo Hammond. Before the villa, Georgia worked as a marketing executive at supermarket Lidl - and she returned shortly after. She currently works as a marketing manager at M&S. Anna Vakili 19 19 Anna appeared in Love Island 2019 alongside the likes of Maura Higgins, Molly Mae Hague and Lucie Donlan. She originally coupled up with Sherif Lanre, but later found a connection with Jordan Hames. However she was dumped days before the final. Anna has a huge following on social media and loves to share sizzling snaps on her Instagram. But during the pandemic, she returned to the pharmacy as a pharmacist. Anna confessed: "First day back working as a Pharmacist since leaving Love Island. It's been almost a whole year! Wow can't believe how fast it's gone. 'Wasn't really planning on registering yet but with everything that's going on it felt wrong not to. "We can all fight this together. Stay safe. Stay home. Save lives.' Malin Andersson 19 Malin shot to fame in 2016 while on Love Island. She coupled up with Rykard Jenkins and then Terry Walsh - who moved on very quickly from her when she was dumped from the show. Before the programme Malin worked as a elderly and palliative carer - and just like Alex and Anna - she returned to her old job during the years of the pandemic. She confessed: "I can't sit at home on my own anymore knowing I have training within the sector." Rachel Fenton Rachel appeared on the same series as Malin all those years ago. Rykard fell head over heels for the beauty and when she was dumped on day 15, he decided to go with her. The pair didn't last long... Similar to the other Islanders working in the health service, she returned to the clinic as a orthopaedic clinical nurse during Covid. Greg O'Shea 19 Greg entered as a bombshell and went on to win the 2019 series with Amber Gill. Two years prior he graduated from University of Limerick with a law degree, but always had a passion for rugby. He still plays the sport now.
