Hong Kong Ups Game with Exciting New Multi-purpose Sports Park

HONG KONG SAR – Media OutReach Neswire – 3 March 2025 – The Grand Opening Ceremony of Kai Tak Sports Park (KTSP) on Saturday (March 1) featured cultural performances, music and entertainment at the magnificent new Kai Tak Stadium with a seating capacity of 50,000, marking the beginning of a new era for Hong Kong as Asia's events capital.
Speaking at the launch event, John Lee, Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region hailed the venue as the largest sports, entertainment and mega event complex in Hong Kong's history.
'The magnificent, multi-purpose Kai Tak Sports Park is a grand stage offering the most enjoyable experience for sports and recreation, entertainment and a whole lot more. Our new home ground will raise every game, on every match!' Mr Lee said. 'And you can count on scores of concerts by top singers and bands from home and abroad, here to raise the roof of Kai Tak Stadium.'
Starting with a thunderous drum roll and traditional lion dance, the two-hour show featured performances by top local singers spanning different genres and generations as well as appearances by renowned celebrities and sports stars from Hong Kong and Mainland China.
It was a fitting opening of the 28-hectare KTSP, which will boost sports development and inject impetus into related industries such as recreation, entertainment and tourism, and also the mega-event economy, thereby consolidating Hong Kong's reputation as an events capital in Asia.
The centrepiece Kai Tak Stadium boasts an eye-catching 'Pearl of the Orient' design theme and a seating capacity of 50,000, making it the largest in Hong Kong. It features a customisable pitch system and retractable roof. This makes it an ideal venue for elite sports competitions as well as grand-scale concerts, vibrant music festivals and exciting cultural programmes.
Kai Tak Arena, with a capacity of 10,000 seats, is another versatile state-of-the-art facility designed to host various international tournaments. It is also convertible to accommodate other events such as fencing or snooker. With an adaptable configuration and interchangeable flooring surfaces, the arena can provide seamless transition between top-level sports events and community activities.
The outdoor Kai Tak Youth Sports Ground with 5,000 seats is an excellent venue for football and rugby matches, team and athlete training sessions, and school sports days.
A series of blockbuster events has already been lined up for KTSP. Among them are the World Grand Prix (snooker) and Hong Kong Sevens (rugby) in March and British rock band Coldplay's world tour in April. KTSP will also be an iconic new destination for Hong Kong's exciting co-hosting of the 15th National Games with Guangdong and Macao in November. Hong Kong will host a total of eight competition events and one mass participation event of the National Games, with Fencing, Handball (men), Rugby Sevens and the Mass Participation Event of Bowling set to take place at KTSP.
Beyond sports and entertainment, Kai Tak Mall is a retail paradise spanning nearly 700,000 square feet. It entices customers with a unique 'sportainment' shopping and leisure experience, offering the most comprehensive collection of professional sports brands and lifestyle products in the city. The Mall also includes a Food Gala with popular eateries and the Dining Cove, a gourmet haven showcasing diverse culinary options from local favourites to international bites, all with stunning views of Victoria Harbour.
'Kai Tak Sports Park is made for you – Hong Kong and the world. Enjoy it all!' said Mr Lee.

Tuchel blasts England's attitude

Thomas Tuchel slammed England's attitude and accused them of a lack of 'seriousness' during Saturday's lacklustre 1-0 win against minnows Andorra. Tuchel's side were booed at the final whistle in Barcelona after Harry Kane's 50th minute tap-in saved England from a humiliating draw with a team ranked 173rd in the world. Although England have won all three of their World Cup qualifiers since Tuchel took charge, they have struggled to fulfil the German's desire for a more attacking style of play. Their laboured efforts against Andorra infuriated Tuchel, who saw alarming signs that his players threw in the towel in the closing stages. 'I didn't like the attitude how we ended the game,' he said. 'I liked the attitude how we started the game, the first 25 minutes, but I didn't like the last 25 minutes, the last half an hour. 'I think we lacked the seriousness and the urgency that is needed in a World Cup qualifier. 'We played with fire and I didn't like the attitude in the end. I didn't like the body language and I think it was not what the occasion needed.' England sit top of Group K as they progress towards next year's World Cup, yet they will need to improve signficantly to make an impact in the tournament in the United States, Canada and Mexico. Tuchel was relieved to secure the victory after Andorra pushed for a late leveller, but he conceded his team had played with a lack of energy. 'In the end we played with fire, honestly. I felt it almost like in a cup game where the favourite does not smell the danger,' he said. 'I didn't feel a team that is aware it's only 1-0 in a World Cup qualifier because we were not happy with ourselves. 'I'm not blaming them. I even feel like they felt 'OK, we're not happy and this is stuck today, it will not happen today'. 'Step by step the energy dropped. We needed exactly the opposite but we couldn't deliver and so we got away with a win.' 'The booing is ok' Tuchel had admitted before the game that it might be hard to crush Andorra by a huge margin because his players were tired after a draining domestic campaign. Nine of England's squad will jet off to the Club World Cup after Tuesday's friendly against Senegal in Nottingham. First, Tuchel will demand a more positive performance at the City Ground next week. 'We will not stop to encourage them and make clear after we have a proper look at the match what we want from them,' he said. England supporters made up the majority of the crowd at the RCDE Stadium and their displeasure was audible throughout a limp game that felt more like a pre-season friendly. Tuchel could not blame them for expressing their frustration, with jeers for the team mixed with abusive songs about British Prime Minister Keir Starmer. 'The booing is OK.' 'They were underwhelmed and not happy with our performance, especially how we ended the first half, so I don't think we can blame them for that,' he said. 'We cannot even blame them how we ended the match. In the opposite. I thought they were fantastic throughout the whole match. 'I did not hear anything about what you said about abusive songs or chants (about the Prime Minister), so if it happens of course it's not acceptable but I didn't hear it.'

British climber breaks his own record with 19th Everest summit

British climber Kenton Cool successfully climbed Mount Everest for the nineteenth time on Sunday, extending his own record for the most summits of the world's highest mountain by a non-Nepali. More than 50 climbers have reached the summit since the spring climbing season began this month, taking advantage of a brief spell of good weather and typically calmer winds. Mountain guide Cool, 51, first climbed Everest in 2004 and has since had an expedition almost every year taking clients up the world's highest peak. "Kenton summited Everest for the 19th time at 11am Nepalese time (0515 GMT) on Sunday," a post on his Instagram account said. His 15th summit in 2021 tied him with American Dave Hahn for the most summits by a non-Nepali climber, and his summit the following year gave him a solo title. Cool was once told he would not walk unaided again after a rock-climbing accident in 1996 that broke both his heel bones. He told AFP in a 2022 interview after his 16th ascent that his Everest record was "not that amazing" in the context of Nepali climbers' achievements. "I'm really surprised by the interest... considering that so many of the Sherpas have so many more ascents," he said then. Nepali climber Kami Rita Sherpa, 55, is also attempting to break his own world record for the most Everest summits with his 31st climb. Cool's latest summit comes after at least two people - a Filipino and an Indian climber - died on Mount Everest this week. Nepal has issued 458 permits to mountaineers this season and a city of tents hosting foreign climbers and support staff has built up at the foot of Everest. Most Everest hopefuls are escorted by a Nepali guide, meaning more than 900 climbers will tread the path to the summit this season. Nepal is home to eight of the world's 10 highest peaks and welcomes hundreds of adventurers each spring. A climbing boom has made mountaineering a lucrative business since Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay Sherpa made the first ascent in 1953. Last year more than 800 climbers made it to the peak of Everest, including 74 from the northern Tibet side.

Piastri grabs Imola pole

Championship leader Oscar Piastri calmly delivered a near-flawless lap under acute pressure yesterday to claim pole position for McLaren ahead of Red Bull's Max Verstappen at the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix. The 24-year-old Australian clocked a best lap in one minute and 14.670 seconds shrugging aside a cluster of slower drivers at the final corner, to beat the four-time world champion by 0.34 seconds. In a delayed and incident-hit qualifying session of two redflag interruptions, it was his third pole position this year and his career. Team-mate Lando Norris, who is 16 points behind him in the drivers' title race, was fourth behind Mercedes' George Russell, ahead of two-time champion Fernando Alonso of Aston Martin in fifth place. Carlos Sainz of Williams was sixth ahead of team-mate Alex Albon, Lance Stroll in the second Aston Martin, Racing Bulls' rookie Isack Hadjar and Pierre Gasly of Alpine. The Ferraris of Charles Leclerc and seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton failed to make the cut to Q3 and qualified 11th and 12th ahead of local hero Kimi Antonelli in the second Mercedes. 'It was a great session, very tough with the delays and red flags and the tricky tyres,' said Piastri. 'The team did a great job and got the car in a nice window, we've been trying a few different things this weekend and we got into a nice place for qualifying.' Verstappen was satisfied despite missing out on his third consecutive pole. 'It was a good day for us,' he said, a sentiment repeated by Russell. 'We could not have achieved much more here today,' said the British driver. Tsunoda high-speed crash The session began in spectacular fashion in glorious spring sunshine when Yuki Tsunoda walked away from an alarming high-speed crash. He lost control of his Red Bull car when he rode the kerbs at the Variante Villeneuve and it lifted and flew sideways before turning upside down into a single barrel roll before skewing into the barriers. The action resumed after a 12-minute interval to repair the circuit before another red flag in the final seconds of Q1 when returning rookie Franco Colapinto, replacing Jack Doohan for Alpine, crashed on the exit of Tamburello. His car was badly damaged as he spun into the barriers nose-first, but he was unhurt and walked clear of the wreckage. Verstappen topped the Q1 times ahead of Piastri and Alonso with Liam Lawson, of Racing Bulls, Sauber's Nico Hulkenberg and the two Haas cars of Esteban Ocon and Oliver Bearman eliminated along with Tsunoda. Bearman's late cancelled time was declared to be 'under review' as Q2 was delayed, a decision that suggested he might be reinstated to replace Sauber's Gabriel Bortoleto. Both sat in their cars waiting before the Brazilian drove alone to pit lane in anticipation. Two minutes later, Bearman conceded his place in Q2 and climbed out. The first run saw McLaren back on top, two-tenths clear of Verstappen, before in a dramatic second Sainz went top and Aston Martin's duo secured topten spots by eliminating both Ferraris. 'My God, oh My God, My God,' said Leclerc, who exited in 11th place along with Hamilton, 12th, Mercedes' local boy Antonelli and Bortoleto. The final shootout began with Piastri on top before Verstappen beat him by 0.049 on the first runs with Norris in P3 ahead of Russell and the impressive rookie Hadjar – but Piastri came back to take pole on his second flying lap.
