That's the message from St Mirren wing-back Declan John who is eyeing up a return to the Welsh international set-up. The last time John was involved in a squad was when Manchester United legend Ryan Giggs called him up in 2019. His final appearance came against Trinidad and Tobago in a friendly. But he hopes that, by the time his career comes to an end, he will have racked up a few more appearances for the Dragons. 'I'd love to get back involved with my country,' he said. 'I've experienced it already. I've got seven caps and it wasn't too long ago that I was in a couple of camps. Hopefully, if I perform well here with St Mirren, I'll be knocking on the door again. 'I'd love to possibly get a few more caps. I'm on seven at the minute and if I could get that to double digits, I'd happy with that. I just concentrate on my football here and then I'll see what happens after that.' It was when John was at Premier League outfit Cardiff City in 2013 that he was handed his first call-up to the national team by boss Chris Coleman. Despite being in and around the squad in the summer of that year, it would be in October that he would make his debut against Macedonia. He added: 'When you're playing for your club, it's your bread and butter. That's what you're doing week in, week out. But, for any player, to get called up to your country is the biggest honour. 'With me being a proud Welshman, hopefully I can try and get back in the squad one day.' John told how, in 2023, Giggs helped him secure a move to Salford City who are owned by the legends from Manchester United's Class of 92. At the time, wife Francesca was pregnant so signing for the Ammies was perfect with the couple living in Manchester. He said: 'It was a bit of a tricky time but it just kind of made sense to go there and play at Salford — and it [connection with Giggs] did help with the move.' And on the current Welsh head coach, former Liverpool and Celtic star Craig Bellamy, John added: 'I think the squad now is really strong. 'The standard is high with players in the Premier League and in the Championship week in, week out. Hopefully they can do well in the World Cup campaign coming up.'
