Online Gaming Bill 2025 explained: India backs e-sports, cracks down on money games with strict penalties

(Image via @florianolv/Unsplash) India is making big moves in the world of online gaming. On Tuesday, the Cabinet approved the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill, 2025, officially giving e-sports a stronger place in the country while also drawing hard lines around money-driven platforms. The bill, now headed to Parliament, is being seen as a game-changer for competitive gaming, players, and the industry at large. What counts as e-sports under the Online Gaming Bill 2025 ? E-sports have been defined as competitive skill-based games played in virtual arenas with recognized rules and standards. The government is now considering professional tournaments, organized competitions, and gaming as a sport. This definition separates e-sports from online gambling-style games, which the bill calls 'money games,' which are titles where cash or valuables are at stake. Those, unlike e-sports, fall under a completely different category and face strict restrictions. The government had already recognized e-sports in 2022 as a multisport event under the Youth Affairs and Sports Ministry, but the new bill aims to take that recognition further with structured promotion and regulation. National e-Sports Authority to regulate, promote, and oversee the gaming industry A major highlight of the Online Gaming Bill 2025 is the creation of a National e-Sports Authority. This central body will: Oversee and promote competitive gaming. Register online social games (the casual, non-money kind). Issue rules for fair play, safety, and compliance. Work with state governments to integrate e-sports into local policies. Officials say this will also open doors for foreign investment, job creation, and international tournaments hosted in India. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like J.P. Anyone caught promoting or betting within e-sports or social games could face fines or even jail time. Lawmakers argue the move is about protecting players from exploitation while supporting a healthy gaming culture. The Online Gaming Bill 2025 brings A new era for India's gamers From the ESL India Premiership to the Commonwealth Esports Championship, Indian teams have already proven their potential. With government support now locked in, the bill could open doors for more sponsorships, global tournaments, and professional pathways for gamers. Chhattisgarh gets its first 14-member cabinet, 3 BJP MLAs inducted as ministers

RAIPUR: Three BJP MLAs on Wednesday took oath as ministers in Chhattisgarh, strengthening the cabinet from 11 to 14 members, which is the highest number ever in state. Governor Ramen Deka administered oath of office and secrecy to BJP legislators Gajendra Yadav, Rajesh Agrawal and Guru Khushwant Saheb at Raj Bhavan in presence of chief minister Vishnu Deo Sai, assembly speaker Raman Singh and other ministers. This is the first time in past 25 years that Chhattisgarh cabinet has got 14 members as all previous cabinets had 13 members for a 90-member assembly. After the implementation of a 15% ceiling on the total strength of assembly and adopting the "Haryana model" that has 14 ministers in 90 member assembly, Chhattisgarh too decided to have 14 members in its cabinet. This full cabinet now has three tribals including CM, two Scheduled Caste, seven OBCs, one Brahmin and one Vaishya. Guru Khushwant Saheb who represents Aarang constituency, is from the influential and powerful Satnami family with the community up in arms since Baloda Bazar collectorate arson and violence case last year. Gajendra Yadav comes from Durg constituency, is son of the previous RSS state head and his non-inclusion in the first cabinet had surprised everyone. Minister Rajesh Agrawal from Ambikapur constituency, was a Congressman till a few years back, represents Surguja which is a hot bed of coal mines and Hasdeo forests. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Redefine Your Future with a Top Online MBA SRM Online Enquire Now Undo Two main tribal regions of Chhattisgarh, Bastar in south had given eight out of 12 MLAs to BJP and there's just one minister from the division, while in north of state - Surguja division- has a huge share, with five ministers from the division, including chief minister Vishnu Deo Sai. All stalwarts of BJP legislative party are left outside the cabinet as if they are designated to 'margdarshak mandal.' In its report on Wednesday, TOI had highlighted that the updated cabinet would be the first 14- member cabinet of the state, since its inception. Out of 14, there are just three members who have served cabinet in previous govts, hence, fresh blood has been promoted by the party with chief minister Sai also the first-time minister. The big question in Chhattisgarh's political scenario is whether the three new ministers will be allotted surplus portfolios with the CM or there would be some reshuffle of the departments among existing ministers. The expansion puts an end to endless political speculation of the last several months that some ministers may be dropped.
