Northern wildfires force Sask. courts to shift operations to Saskatoon
The first indication that it's not business as usual at La Ronge docket court is that it's taking place at the provincial courthouse in Saskatoon.
The second indication is that the judge, Murray Pelletier, is on the bench wearing a dress shirt instead of robes. The Crown and defence are appearing remotely on a video screen.
On this weekday morning, Pelletier is casually chatting with staff, offering updates on the status of his grandson, who is back in the northern community and staying at the Mel Hegland Uniplex. There are jokes about who needs to smoke cigarettes when you only need to step outside.
And then, at 9:30 a.m. CST, Pelletier glances at his computer screen and stands to open court.
"Thanks to everyone for attending in these exceptional circumstances," he says to the Crown and defence.
The northern fires are causing week-by-week adjustments in court schedules across the north. For the week of June 3, the fires disrupted sittings at Cumberland House, Black Lake, Deschambault Lake and La Ronge.
On Friday, Pelletier dealt with two docket matters.
The first concerned a trial scheduled for June 6 for a man charged with assault and uttering death threats.
"Due to the exceptional circumstances in La Ronge, the trial is unable to go ahead," he concluded.
It was rescheduled for Aug. 22.
The second matter involved adjusting the release conditions for a man awaiting trial on charges of escaping custody and sexual assault.
The La Ronge courthouse will remain closed until at least June 13.
While the courts are working remotely, RCMP say officers are staying in the areas affected by fire until it becomes too imminently dangerous for them to be there.
There are officers patrolling and responding to calls for service in all northern Saskatchewan communities, including in the La Ronge and Creighton detachment areas, which have been heavily hit by wildfire.
"We are maintaining a strong police presence to deter any people who are thinking of committing crime — and potentially making an already stressful situation worse for their potential victims," Staff Sgt. Shawn Carter said in a news release,
Officers are regularly patrolling communities that are evacuated.
RCMP said two men from La Ronge were arrested in a stolen auto at a Highway No. 2 checkpoint on June 4. Officers recovered a laptop and package, and connected the men to a theft in the town on June 3.
Due to the fires, Saskatchewan RCMP has also redirected approximately 29 officers who were scheduled to assist at the upcoming G7 meeting to help here in our province.

Investigation concludes into Fredericton crash that killed two teens, young adult
Fredericton police have concluded an investigation into a triple fatality on Douglas Avenue last May. The incident occurred in the early hours of May 5, 2024, when a speeding car struck a tree and landed on another vehicle. Two males aged 22 and 17 and a female, aged 14, died at the scene. The two other passengers, a 15-year-old male and 14-year-old female, were brought to hospital with critical and minor injuries. The four occupants of the other vehicle sustained minor injuries. Police attempted to stop the vehicle when it passed on a different street but lost them as they were turning around to follow them. The crash happened several minutes later. 'Following a comprehensive investigation that included laboratory analysis and DNA testing, authorities have conclusively determined the identity of the individual who was driving the vehicle at the time of the accident,' Fredericton police said in a Facebook post. The late driver cannot be identified due to the Youth Criminal Justice Act, and as a result of the findings no charges will be laid. Driver charged twice this weekend for driving while suspended on eastern Ontario highways
Ontario Provincial Police say this driver was charged on Friday in Russell Township and Sunday in Ottawa for driving while suspended. (OPP/X) A North Dundas Township man is facing several charges, including two counts of driving while suspended, after being stopped twice in three days on eastern Ontario roads. Ontario Provincial Police said an officer stopped a vehicle on Notre Dame Street in Russell Township on Friday after the Automated Licence Plate Recognition camera flagged a licence plate that should not be in use. 'The driver was arrested and charged for driving while suspended under the Criminal Code, as well as for having an unauthorized plate and having open cannabis in the vehicle,' the OPP said in a media release. At approximately 10:30 a.m. Sunday, an officer stopped a driver for using a handheld device while driving on Hwy. 417 in Ottawa. 'It was learned that the driver has a suspended licence and had actually been arrested Friday on Notre Dame Street in Russell Township and was charged then,' the OPP said. 'In both cases, the individual had been driving borrowed vehicles, both of which were impounded.' The driver is facing two counts of operation while prohibited under the Criminal Code, seven counts of driving while under suspension, and one count each of distracted driving, using a plate not authorized for a vehicle and driving with cannabis in open packaging. The driver is scheduled to appear in court on Monday. Police say the borrowed vehicle stopped on Friday will be impounded for 45 days, while the vehicle stopped on Sunday will be impounded for 90 days.
