Wisconsin man charged in Upper Peninsula kidnapping and sexual assault cold case
In August 1986, a woman reported that she was assaulted while on a bike trip from her home in Lac du Flambeau, Wisconsin, to Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. The woman told Michigan State Police that after using a public bathroom at the Big Fishdam River access off US-2 in Garden Township, she was forced into a man's car at gunpoint, where he then drove around and sexually assaulted her several times before releasing her, according to police.
After 37 years without a breakthrough, MSP detectives in 2023 utilized an existing partnership with Northern Michigan University's cold case program, which gives students in the school's criminal justice program opportunities with investigation, forensic analysis and the criminal justice system.
NMU students began reviewing the original case in the fall of 2023. During that time, the use of forensic genetic genealogy, which combines genealogical databases and DNA evidence from crimes to map familial connections, was suggested to help solve the case.
MSP's forensic science division worked with a private laboratory to complete forensic genealogy testing, which provided detectives with an investigative lead.
Working with the Wisconsin Department of Justice's Division of Criminal Investigation and the Forest County Sheriff's Office in Wisconsin, Michigan detectives identified a 78-year-old Argonne, Wisconsin, man, who had previously lived in Harris, Michigan, at the time of the kidnapping and assault, and about a 45-minute drive from where the crime occurred.
A DNA sample was collected from the man and matched a sample taken from evidence in 1986.
Delta County prosecutors charged the man with kidnapping and first-degree criminal sexual conduct. Authorities had planned to arrest the man on July 29; however, he was found dead in his home on July 27.
As a result of the suspect being found dead before being arraigned, state police are not identifying him. The victim has been notified that her alleged attacker was positively identified.
"This case is a reminder of both the importance of persistence and of collaboration in the pursuit of justice," said Colonel James F. Grady II, director of the MSP, in a statement. "I extend my gratitude to the dedicated MSP troopers and detectives who worked this case over the years, never allowing it to be forgotten."
The case is believed to be the oldest sexual assault case in the state solved by using forensic genealogy, according to state police.
The Forest County Sheriff's Office is currently investigating the man's death.

Clinton Township man charged with involuntary manslaughter in death of elderly father
A Macomb County man has been charged in connection with the death of his elderly father, prosecutors announced. Michael Stirling, 51, of Clinton Township, is charged with involuntary manslaughter, second-degree abuse of a vulnerable adult and second offense habitual offender. Authorities say on Nov. 3, 2024, a neighbor called police after seeing Michael Stirling trying to enter his home while appearing disoriented. Clinton Township police helped Michael Stirling gain access to his home, and then they conducted a welfare check on Michael Stirling's father, 77-year-old James Stirling, who was found dead in his bed. Macomb County prosecutors allege that Michael Stirling claimed that he was his father's live-in caretaker and initially told investigators that he had not seen his father since the day prior, but later said that he had left his home on Oct. 30 and had arranged for someone to look after his father. Investigators were unable to locate that person, and the phone number that was provided was not working. The medical examiner determined that James Stirling died from dehydration and classified his death as a homicide. Michael Stirling was arraigned Wednesday and issued a $250,000 bond and referred to Community Mental Health and for a substance abuse evaluation, prosecutors said. If released on bond, Michael Stirling must wear a GPS tether and is subject to house arrest. "Today's arraignment involves serious allegations that, according to the charges, resulted in the death of a vulnerable senior. My office remains committed to protecting the elderly in our community. When those entrusted with a loved one's care are alleged to have failed in that duty, and harm results, we take those cases seriously and will pursue justice through the legal process," said Macomb County Prosecutor Peter J. Lucido in a statement. Michael Stirling is back in court for a probable cause conference on Aug. 18.

Suspect arrested in Rochester Hills serial flasher case
The Brief A 32-year-old suspect was arrested months after two 12-year-olds were victims of a serial flasher in Rochester Hills. Parents say they often visit the area to shop. At 9:30 p.m. on Monday, officials told FOX 2 that a 32-year-old man had turned himself in with his attorney. ROCHESTER HILLS, Mich. (FOX 2) - Sheriff's deputies in Oakland County were on the hunt for an alleged serial flasher who was arrested Monday evening, months after it was reported. The suspect was wanted for exposing himself to 12-year-old girls more than once. Big picture view It all happened in the Village of Rochester Hills at an outdoor shopping mall where families and groups of young people hang out during the summer. Now, two young girls are traumatized after falling victim to an alleged flasher not once, but twice in the same day. It was Sunday afternoon on June 29 when Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard said two 12-year-old girls were sitting outside Shake Shack when the man approached them. "He had a shirt that was untucked and when he raised it he was exposed," Bouchard said. "The girls smartly moved away. Went to another business, he approached them again and exposed himself again. They yelled at him. Other adults came to see what was going on. The suspect fled the scene." News of the encounter caught shoppers off guard. Local perspective Parents say they often visit the area to shop, and they always see groups of teens frequently walking around as well. Police say, at the very least, an incident like this can be viewed as an opportunity for parents to have a conversation with their children. Bouchard said this same man is said to have exposed himself in Auburn Hills on the same day.
