File bigamy FIR against acting Sancoale sarpanch: Court
Panaji/Vasco: A Vasco court has directed the inspector of the Verna police station to register an FIR against Derrick Vales, the acting sarpanch of Sancoale, in a complaint of bigamy and fraud filed by his second wife. His second wife went to court stating that Vales deceived her about having divorced his previous wife. He married his first wife in 2012 and the second wife in July 2021 under the Indian Christian Marriage Act before the marriage registrar at Mantralaya, Mumbai. The court directive was issued in June, but Verna police are yet to register an offence against Vales. Verna PI Anand Shirodkar told TOI that he has not received the court's order yet. 'The FIR will be lodged once I receive a copy of the court order,' Shirodkar said. The second wife of Vales stated that he misled and enticed her into marriage under the pretext that his first marriage was dissolved, which she said was existing and continues to exist to date. She stated that he abandoned her in Nov 2021 and never returned as the child born was brought up by her after her complete abandonment by him. The woman said she requested Verna police to register an FIR against Vales for fraud, bigamy, consent by misrepresentation, and having sexual intercourse with the promise of marriage without the intention of fulfilling it. The South Goa SP also failed to direct the registration of an FIR as a result of which she was forced to go to court, she said. The court said that the complaint discloses the commission of cognisable offences of sexual intercourse by employing deceitful means. The woman said that Vales showed her a roznama disposing of his previous matrimonial petition which made her believe that the marriage was dissolved, based on which she married him. 'In view of such information, the subsequent conduct of the accused ex facie indicates deceitful intent to enter into marriage with the applicant,' said judicial magistrate first class, C Court, Vasco, Pooja S Desai. Police intensify crackdown on drug smuggling ahead of Onam
Kochi: With barely weeks left for Onam, authorities have begun a crackdown to stop drug flow into the district. Huge quantities of ganja and heroin purportedly intended for sale ahead of Onam were seized in the past week. Over the weekend, police foiled three bids to smuggle large quantities of ganja into the district. They also seized heroin worth 30 lakh on Sunday. On Monday, city police arrested two West Bengal natives with 40kg of ganja. A day earlier, three men were arrested in Aluva with 17kg of ganja. On Saturday, two persons were apprehended with 16kg of ganja at Marottichuvadu in Kalady. Officers said that in most cases, the ganja was smuggled from Odisha via train. The arrested persons, in most cases, were from other states who were assigned to deliver the contraband in the state and then return. Police sources said that surveillance and intelligence gathering have been intensified considering the upcoming festival season.
