Congress MLAs play flute before ‘buffalo' in unique protest at M.P. Assembly; Speaker asks ministers to give direct answers

The Hindu29-07-2025
The Congress MLAs on Tuesday (July 29, 2025) staged a protest on the Legislative Assembly's premises, during the ongoing Monsoon Session, by playing flutes before symbolic buffaloes while accusing the Madhya Pradesh Government of silence over various issues of public importance.
Led by Leader of Opposition Umang Singhar, the Congress MLAs enacted the popular Hindi saying 'bhains ke aage been bajana (playing flute before a buffalo)' which means that there is no point of saying anything to someone who won't do anything about it.
Speaking to the reporters, Mr. Singhar accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government of being 'completely insensitive' towards the public's issues like unemployment, farmers' distress and 27 percent reservation for the State's Other Backward Classes (OBC).
'A government as inactive as a buffalo! The government has now become completely insensitive. Just as a buffalo neither listens nor reacts when a flute is played in front of it, similarly, this BJP government remains silent on the serious and public-interest issues raised by the opposition,' the Congress leader said, while other MLAs played flutes before two persons dressed as buffaloes.
'People are struggling with inflation, the government does not want to give jobs to the youth, it does not tell when the State will receive investment, farmers are not getting fertilizers. We have played the flute [sought answers] about these issues but the government rejects them and is sitting with its eyes closed. It does not listen, speak, or find a solution,' he added.
As part of a strategy devised during a recently held two-day training camp for party MLAs, the Congress legislators are demonstrating in unique ways in the Assembly. Earlier on Monday on the opening day of the Session, the MLAs displayed toy chameleons and accused the Government of 'changing colours or its stance' on issues.
Meanwhile, Assembly Speaker Narendra Singh Tomar directed the ministers to give direct answers to the questions asked in the House instead of saying that the information is being collected.
Mr. Tomar's instructions came after Congress MLA Bala Bachchan complained that at least 16 questions, asked of the departments helmed by Chief Minister Mohan Yadav, have received similar responses that the details are being gathered.
Taking cognizance of the matter, Mr. Tomar said that he has also noticed the trend.
'Instructions have been given on this matter earlier. The chief minister is sitting here. A direct answer should come,' Mr. Tomar said.

BJP workers plant saplings in memory of late Sushma Swaraj

On the sixth death anniversary of former External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj on Wednesday, as a tribute, 501 saplings were planted at Silver Oak Park, Jangpura Extension, said Delhi BJP president Virender Sachdeva. 'Today, on the death anniversary of Sushma Swaraj, we, BJP workers, gathered to offer floral tributes and plant 501 saplings. Swaraj was like a mother to all of us. Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's initiative 'One Tree in the Name of Mother', we planted these saplings in her memory,' said Mr. Sachdeva. 'Swaraj's ideals and personality remain an ongoing source of inspiration for all our workers. From her, we learned how to conduct debate in the House with civility, even while in the Opposition,' he added. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, who took part in the event, said that thousands of women across India and abroad still remember Sushma as a source of inspiration. 'She was not only a towering personality, but also a motherly politician. Every daughter of the country should draw inspiration from her life,' said Ms. Gupta.

CM demands over ₹1 cr. recovery from Kejriwal over ‘fake' phansi-ghar

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Wednesday called for a thorough inquiry and demanded that the ₹1.04 crore spent by the previous Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government on a British-era 'fake' 'phansi-ghar' (execution room) at the Delhi Assembly be recovered from former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. Terming the move a 'deception of people' and an 'insult to martyrs', Ms. Gupta said the installation was based on no official documentation and essentially a repurposed 'tiffin room' falsely portrayed as a historic phansi-ghar to mislead the public. During a discussion in the Assembly, she said an FIR should be registered against Mr. Kejriwal and the structure be removed before August 25. Noting that the phansi-ghar was inaugurated on August 9, 2022, Assembly Speaker Vijender Gupta said the 1911-12 building map accessed from the National Archives clearly marked the space as a tiffin room. 'I challenge AAP to find one historian who can verify it was an execution room,' he said. 'Distortion of heritage' 'Such tiffin rooms are in other offices too. You will know about them if you conduct an inquiry. Without any documents, it was declared as an execution room. We are ashamed of this. He [Kejriwal] had a disease of lying,' the CM said, terming it a 'distortion of heritage'. AAP legislator Sanjeev Jha said many execution rooms from the British era are not officially recorded and accused the ruling party of 'standing with the British'.

7 held for attack on Suvendu's convoy in Cooch Behar

1 2 Kolkata/Jalpaiguri: Seven people were arrested by Cooch Behar Police on Wednesday in connection with the attack on the convoy of Bengal leader of opposition Suvendu Adhikari. Sources said the arrested included TMC workers and Trinamool Yuva functionaries. The arrested were remanded to five days' judicial custody. Meanwhile, Bengal BJP president Samik Bhattacharya moved a notice in Rajya Sabha under Rule 267 of the Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business in the Council of State (Rajya Sabha), seeking a discussion on the attack, which he described as "an attack on democracy". Adhikari's convoy came under attack in Cooch Behar on Tuesday, when he arrived to attend a protest rally and submit a memorandum to the SP regarding alleged assaults on BJP workers. As the convoy reached Khagrabari, a group of alleged TMC supporters attacked the convoy. In his complaint, Adhikari named 41 persons, including state minister, Udayan Guha. "We are not going to leave them. If Udayan Guha was directly involved in the incident, the police's role cannot be ruled out," Adhikari said at a meeting on Wednesday. "Not a single Rohingya or Bangladeshi Muslim was named in complaint or arrested. His comments were baseless and he should apologise. Those who disrespect Bengalis and the Bengali language will be shown black flags," Guha said.
