Match scorecard
Jacob Duffy and Matthew Waite took advantage of a seam-friendly pitch to skittle Essex for 179 at Chelmsford.
New Zealand's Duffy led the way with a fine display of fast, accurate bowling that was rewarded with figures of 4-39 while Waite took out three middle-order wickets as Essex were dismissed inside 59 overs.
Only Simon Harmer's innings lasted more than 47 balls and 68 minutes.
The South African spinner's obdurate 77-ball 28 spanned nearly two hours – as no one got to grips with a hybrid pitch that had plenty of grass on it and provided extra lift, carry and lateral movement.
The toss was crucial and Brett D'Oliveira won it for Worcestershire. Not that the visitors fared much better when it was their turn to bat.
Although Essex were without England pace prospect Sam Cook, on instruction from the ECB, who had asked for him to be rested pending a potential call-up, they still managed to reduce Worcestershire to 22-4.
Jake Libby pushed a delivery from Snater into Matt Critchley's right hand at third slip and Gareth Roderick fell to the same combination. Then Essex's debutant overseas bowler Kasun Rajitha had his first wicket when Rob Jones was caught behind and Jamie Porter had Kashif Ali taken at fourth slip to make
But Adam Hose and visiting skipper Brett D'Oliveira, who had been a big doubt for the game with a thumb injury, then stepped up, piecing together the biggest partnership of the match so far.
They added an unbeaten 76 added for the fifth wicket as the Pears revived to 98-4 when bad light ended play with nine overs remaining.
Worcestershire are looking for a second successive Championship win at Chelmsford, last season's victory in September, their third straight four-day win of 2024, and a massive stride towards securing their place in the top flight following promotion in 2023.

Can Bamford still lead the line in the Premier League?

Will Patrick Bamford still be an asset in the Premier League? The 31-year-old struggled for fitness last season and did not start a game in the Championship, coming off the bench 17 times without scoring. Advertisement However, he boasts more top-flight experience than most in the Leeds squad and did score 17 Premier League goals in the 2021-22 season, the last time the Whites went up. This week's Don't Go To Bed Just Yet podcast episode discusses whether he can still be useful for Daniel Farke. "Most people listening would probably agree that a nine needs to be bought," said BBC Radio Leeds sports editor Jonny Buchan. "But if [Bamford] plays every pre-season game, has a decent one, plays in Dublin against AC Milan - he does have Premier League pedigree, something the club need and want," . Advertisement "He's already got that and he scored 17 in the top flight before." Co-host and Kaiser Chiefs bassist Simon Rix can also see the value of keeping Bamford around. "We've seen Bamford trying to get fit," added Rix. "He never gave me any hint he wants to leave Leeds. He knows he needs to get to the first day of pre-season ready to go because last season was a bit of a washout. "He's back in credit with the fans. There is an argument that if you get Pat fit for 28 games in a Premier League season, he's very worth having. If someone else had him, you'd think he's a good striker for them to have. Advertisement "I just don't know if you can go into a very important season again relying on Bamford to be fit. It feels like a stretch." Listen to the full episode on BBC Sounds Where do you stand on Bamford's future? Would you use him in the Premier League and, if so, what should his role be? Lets us know here.

South Africa wins toss and bowling first against Australia in WTC final

LONDON -- South Africa won the toss and chose to bowl first against defending champion Australia at Lord's in the World Test Championship final on Wednesday. Cloud cover decided the call. 'Massive (occasion)," South Africa captain Temba Bavuma said. 'You can hear the South African accents as well in the stands. Should be a spectacle." Unlike South Africa, Australia didn't have a warmup game, but captain Pat Cummins said they were ready. 'Preparation has been unreal. All the guys in the team are ready to go,' Cummins said. 'We have had about 10 days of preparation. I don't think there's any extra pressure. We've been here before and won it. So it's just about going out and enjoying it.' The teams were named on Tuesday. Australia has gone with a new top order by pushing up Marnus Labuschagne to open in a test for the first time, and placing Cameron Green at No. 3 for his first test in 15 months. Josh Hazlewood has displaced Scott Boland in the pace attack. South Africa brought back Lungi Ngidi as the third seamer in the only change to the team from its last test in January in Cape Town, a four-day win over Pakistan. ___ South Africa: Aiden Markram, Ryan Rickelton, Wiaan Mulder, Temba Bavuma (captain), Tristan Stubbs, David Bedingham, Kyle Verreynne, Marco Jansen, Keshav Maharaj, Kagiso Rabada, Lungi Ngidi. Australia: Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne, Cameron Green, Steve Smith, Travis Head, Beau Webster, Alex Carey, Pat Cummins (captain), Mitchell Starc, Nathan Lyon, Josh Hazlewood.
