The Best Subcompact SUVs for 2025

Yahoo31-03-2025
A decade ago, most of these subcompact SUVs would have been marketed as hatchbacks. But now the crossover is king and even most entry-level shoppers are seeking tall seating positions, optional all-wheel drive, and extra cargo space. Because of their low price points, not all of these subcompact SUVs offer all-wheel drive, but they are all practical choices that will satisfy the needs of SUV shoppers on a budget. Ranked in order from best to worst, these are the small SUVs that get it right.

Mazda established its name in the U.S. with affordable performance cars like the MX-5 Miata, and while it still builds that fun-to-drive roadster, it has now firmly shifted its focus to the world of crossovers. The CX-30, the smallest of the lineup, may be more humble than the delightful CX-50, but it brings the engaging charm we expect from a Mazda to a smaller footprint. Although it's a bit more expensive than the other models here due to its standard all-wheel drive, the CX-30 remains one of the best offerings in its class. And it offers the same turbocharged 2.5-liter engine available in many other Mazdas, making it far more powerful than the other SUVs on this list.

The Trax's most attractive element is its low base price, but there are other appealing factors as well. It's far more spacious than the previous-generation Trax, and it's pleasant to drive. The only engine option is a turbocharged 1.3-liter inline-three, and the transmission is a six-speed automatic, meaning it avoids the droning sensation found in many of the other models here that come with CVTs. The only real downside of the Trax is that it doesn't offer all-wheel drive.

Hyundai makes two small SUVs, and the Kona is the larger of the two. It was most recently redesigned for 2024 with a futuristic new look. The Kona is a strong offering in any form, but it is at its best with the more powerful turbo engine offered in the more expensive N-Line and Limited trim levels. All-wheel drive is optional with both the turbo engine and the base 2.0-liter inline-four. The driver-focused Kona N from the previous generation has been discontinued, but we're hoping it makes its return soon.
The Electric Version Is a Great EV for the MoneyPrice: $25,095
Say goodbye to the bulky bubble of Grandma Doris' bingo buggy: Buick finally decided to slick back its hair with the Envista, a stylish new entry-level model that joined the lineup for 2025. The Envista, which has a similar rakish roofline to many of today's "coupe" SUV models, is meant to attract younger buyers. The most enticing element is the starting price of just over $25,000, while the standard turbocharged 2-liter inline-three engine is less intriguing. Think of the Envista as a slightly upscale version of the Chevrolet Trax also found on this list.

The Crosstrek is a megahit, as it's now one of the bestselling Subaru models. It takes the Impreza hatchback one step further thanks to its extra ground clearance that provides just enough capability to get Subaru's owners to the start of their outdoor adventures. It may lack some of the charm of the outgoing model, but Subaru's latest should be a winner with buyers. There's already an off-road-oriented Wilderness trim, and a hybrid model will join the lineup for 2026, promising better fuel economy and more horsepower than the standard versions.

The Honda HR-V is a practical and sensible choice. It's spacious, fuel-efficient, and pleasant, but it doesn't offer much to distinguish itself from the other crossovers in this class. The base powertrain is an underpowered 2.0-liter four-cylinder, and a CVT is the only transmission available. The interior is versatile and modern, with good tech offerings. It's essentially a smaller sibling to the popular Honda CR-V, but it doesn't offer that model's enticing hybrid powertrain.
We Prefer the Larger CR-V over the HR-VBase Price: $28,385
Kia's second-generation Niro brings a bold new design detail: a contrasting side blade reminiscent of the first-generation Smart ForTwo. The hybrid version is the cheapest of the bunch, but there's also a plug-in-hybrid model and even a fully-electric variant, both of which are available at a significant price premium. None offer all-wheel drive, but they are rated at up to 53 mpg combined by the EPA, an impressive number for a vehicle with this much cargo space.

Thanks to its redesign for 2025, the Kicks went from a middling value player to one of the more interesting-looking SUVs in its class. The new design is cool, and it has substance to back up the style thanks to a more powerful engine and newly available all-wheel drive. Both of these additions enhance the driving experience, although the Kicks still isn't much of a drag-racer given that it only has 141 horsepower. Best of all, the base price isn't up by much, and you get lots of equipment for the money.
It's Among the Least-Expensive New Cars You Can BuyBase Price: $21,650
The Hyundai Venue may not be as complete an offering as its Kona stablemate, but it provides exceptional value. At just over $21,000, it is one of the best deals in any market and provides a low entry point into Hyundai's lineup. The main sacrifice you'll make is in the powertrain department, as the tiny 1.6-liter inline-four doesn't provide much power, and front-wheel drive is the only drivetrain choice.
It's One of the Cheapest SUVs You Can BuyBase Price: $21,885
Remember cars like the Scion xB and Honda Element? The original Kia Soul was part of a trend when it first arrived, but now it's the only of these box-shaped cars to survive. Beyond the straightforward proportions and the memorable hamster ads, the Soul stands out with its small and maneuverable size and low entry price. Front-wheel drive is the only setup available, but it's surprisingly refined to drive for the segment.Base Price: $26,585
If you're not satisfied by either of Kia's other offerings in this segment, the Soul and the Niro, perhaps the slightly larger Seltos will have what you're looking for. It provides more space inside than either of those, an optional turbocharged engine, and available all-wheel drive. However, you'll pay considerably more for these benefits, as the Seltos sits at a higher price point and can reach well over $30,000 once you start adding the most desirable extras.Base Price: $26,420
Unlike some of the other cars on this list, the Taos looks like a real SUV. It has a handsome squared-off look and has plenty of space inside, while also offering optional all-wheel drive. Although the VW Jetta compact sedan remains VW's entry-level model, the Taos effectively replaces the old Golf hatchback on dealer lots, as that model is now offered in the U.S. only in performance-oriented Golf GTI and Golf R configurations. An update for 2025 brings a bit of extra power for the turbo-four, as it now makes 174 hp.
Tested: 2025 Volkswagen TaosBase Price: $25,485
The Corolla Cross is one of seven distinct SUVs made by Toyota, but it is the only one that sits at an entry-level price point. The base powertrain is a lackluster 2.0-liter inline-four, but it does offer all-wheel drive. Even the optional hybrid model starts at $29,845, offering considerably better fuel economy and better acceleration but still squeaking in under the $30,000 mark.

3 moves GM made to navigate the tariff landscape

General Motors tapped its tariff-mitigation playbook the week of Aug. 4, inking three deals with new partners that will allow the automaker to better navigate this current landscape. One partnership aims to generate additional revenue, another should directly protect the automaker from import costs, while the third puts GM directly in the line of fire of tariffs, but only temporarily. Automaker partnership GM and Hyundai Motor announced on Aug. 6 the first vehicles the companies plan to jointly develop. Four of the vehicles — a compact SUV, a car, a pickup and a midsize pickup — are intended for retail sales and will support both internal combustion and hybrid powertrains. The automakers also said a co-developed electric commercial van is in the works. Switch Auto Insurance and Save Today! Affordable Auto Insurance, Customized for You The Insurance Savings You Expect Great Rates and Award-Winning Service Shilpan Amin, GM senior vice president and global chief procurement and supply chain officer, said on Aug. 7 that the vehicles announced will be targeted at the largest segments in the Central and South American markets, as well as the commercial segment in North America. 'By partnering together, GM and Hyundai will bring more choice to our customers faster, and at lower cost,' Amin said in a statement. 'These first co-developed vehicles clearly demonstrate how GM and Hyundai will leverage our complementary strengths and combined scale.' The truck, for which GM will be responsible, could be based on the platform for the next-gen Canyon or Colorado, proposes Sam Abuelsamid, vice president of Telemetry. 'When you have a partnership like this, the automakers try to structure it where each gets something out of it in terms of scale, components or manufacturing capacity,' he said. 'Some of these vehicles, most likely, will be built at GM plants, some will be built at Hyundai facilities, but ultimately will provide more scale, which tends to mean cost reductions.' If the van is based on a Hyundai platform and in North America, Abuelsamid said he would not be surprised if Hyundai constructed it at its plant in Savannah, Georgia. Battery deal with China GM plans to import electric vehicle batteries from China, Reuters reported Aug. 7. GM confirmed to the Free Press that the deal will function as a 'stopgap' until it can manufacture its own lower-cost batteries made with lithium iron phosphate chemistry in the U.S. alongside South Korean battery partner LG Energy Solution. GM would not confirm the specific company that makes the batteries, though Reuters reported that sources familiar with the matter believe it to be CATL. More: GM breaks EV range record with elaborate 2026 Silverado EV drive test 'For several years, other U.S. automakers have depended on foreign suppliers for LFP battery sourcing and licensing. To stay competitive, GM will temporarily source these packs from similar suppliers to power our most affordable EV model,' GM spokesman Kevin Kelly said in a statement. 'We're proud that we sell 12 EVs in the U.S. using domestically produced battery cells, and in 2027 we will bring LFP production to the U.S., further cementing our unique and resilient U.S.-based supply chain.' The batteries are slated for the new Chevrolet Bolt, which is planned to go into production in the fourth quarter of this year. Currently, there is no company producing lithium iron phosphate batteries at volume except for LG Energy Solution in its Holland, Michigan, plant, though that plant is focused on producing pouch cells for energy storage. Prismatic cells that are light on nickel boast another advantage ― in addition to a cheaper chemistry, the shape allows automakers to pack in more cells to a battery, Abuelsamid said. The pouch designs separate the cells through layers and limit how many cells rest in one pack. 'The pouch shape helps to isolate the cells, so in case ... you do have a defect or thermal runaway, it's less likely to spread to the entire battery pack,' he said. Automakers 'didn't realize how long the battery packs will last, so the module format helps with serviceability.' Of the total battery pack volume in modular systems, only 30% to 35% is devoted to active cell material storing energy, Abuelsamid added, because the box, the wiring and cooling components eat up the remaining space. 'When you get rid of those modules and go to a structural design, you can fill up that pack with cells. Or, conversely, you can also make a battery with the same capacity that's half the size,' he said. So even importing these batteries from China, 'GM must feel that the net cost makes sense on a temporary basis. It's probably going to still be cheaper than building now with nickel-rich cells.' Rare magnet agreement in Texas GM signed a multiyear supply agreement with Texas-based Noveon Magnetics for rare earth magnets in an effort to decrease reliance on foreign-sourced materials. Automakers, especially those focused on EVs, are among the largest industrial consumers of rare earth materials and have struggled in recent months to obtain supply tied up in the fluctuating tariff environment. Noveon is the sole operational manufacturer of sintered neodymium-iron-boron rare earth magnets, the most powerful available commercially, in the U.S. The magnets are deployed in the motors of electric and hybrid vehicles among other uses. Noveon said in a news release the agreement is to supply rare earth magnets to support GM's full-size SUVs and trucks. Rare earth magnets are seen as the most efficient way to power EVs and are known to improve torque. GM also maintains a relationship for rare earth magnets with California-based MP Materials, the only active and scaled rare earth production site in America. MP Materials broke ground in 2022 on its first rare earth metal, alloy and magnet factory in Fort Worth, Texas, where it will take the mined minerals and make them into finished alloy and magnets for GM's EVs starting later this year. Automakers require multiple sources for magnets because different grades of magnets are used for different applications. Magnets from MP are destined for electric vehicle drive motors, for example, while the deal with Noveon will supply magnets for internal-combustion engine truck production. Hyundai Tucson N Is Reportedly In The Works With A 300-HP Hybrid Powertrain

Hyundai's N Division has shaken up the performance car world since it introduced the spicy Veloster N in 2019, and its future is looking bright. The N Division is responsible for one of the most engaging and exciting EVs we have yet to see in the Ioniq 5 N, and the Ioniq 6 N is the next N model, but news just dropped that the next-generation Tucson may also be touched by the N angels with a 300-horsepower hybrid powertrain. The news that Hyundai's N Division could be planning a proper Tucson N is huge, given that the Tucson is the brand's best selling model by far. The brand's other N models are more niche than a performance compact crossover is, since the Elantra N is only sold as a sedan, and the Ioniq 5 N is an EV. Producing a properly performance-oriented hybrid crossover might just be the division's golden ticket. As a refresher, Hyundai's N Division was spearheaded by Albert Biermann, the former head of BMW's M division who is responsible for the E39 BMW M5, the E46 BMW M3, and the skunkworks BMW 1 Series M. He retired in 2021, but he remains an executive technical advisor to Hyundai's performance division. Read more: How Much Do Car Salespeople Make? The Pay Structure Explained What To Expect From A Tucson N Vice president of Hyundai's N Management Group Joon Park told Auto Express UK that the N Division will not restrict itself to EVs, but will also include a series of lighter hybrid cars including the Tucson N. He said, "We're not limiting ourselves to EVs. We will go further with the ICE-based cars as well; this is not the end of our journey. I cannot tell you exactly – but lighter, more agile, nimble, and exciting. These are the key elements that we are heading to." Park also said that Hyundai will proceed with different hybrid powertrain strategies, one for efficiency, and one for neutral efficiency, and if an N car has a hybrid system, it will be focused more on power. He said, " If we can make a smaller model with a less-weighted battery, then it can be better.' The 300-horsepower Tucson N hybrid may end up receiving a new version of Hyundai's current 1.6-liter I4 hybrid electric powertrain, and if Hyundai's other N models are any indication, it'll be a game changer in the compact crossover space. The yet-to-be-revealed 2027 Hyundai Tucson has been caught in pre-production camouflage, but its design hasn't officially been revealed as of yet. We will keep you posted with any updates we find. Here are the EVs you can buy for less than $35,000

As steep tariffs threaten to drive up car prices and an incentive for buying electric vehicles nears its expiration date, electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids are becoming harder to afford. For those looking to make the switch to electric on a budget, there are just a few low-cost options. Here's a look at those available for under $35,000. The 2025 Nissan Leaf starts at $28,140, according to the company website. The four-door compact sport-utility vehicle has a range of 212 miles and tops the list of the most affordable all-electric cars available in the U.S. The Leaf, which originally hit roads in 2010, was the first mass-market electric vehicle, according to Nissan. It helped spur global interest in EVs and was the top-selling plug-in electric car until 2020, when it was surpassed by the Tesla Model 3. According to the auto industry site Edmunds, a major disadvantage of the Leaf is its charging port, which is not compatible with many public chargers. Known as a CHAdeMO, the technology was once more common but is being phased out. Edmunds also criticizes the Leaf for its small storage capacity and limited range, but lists comfort and a quiet ride as part of the car's appeal. Nissan also sells the Ariya, an electric crossover SUV with a range of 289 miles and a starting price around $39,000. The 2025 Kona Electric has a manufacturer's suggested retail price of $32,975. The SUV has a range of 261 miles and can charge from 10% to 80% in as little as 43 minutes with a direct current fast charger. That's slower than some of its rivals, according to Edmunds, which also cites the Kona for 'lackluster' handling. The vehicle is easy to drive and park, however, and is a good value for its price, the site's reviewer said. Hyundai has been working on all-electric vehicles since 1991, when the automaker developed the Sonata Electric Vehicle for testing. Its first commercially available EV was the Hyundai BlueOn, in 2010. The 2025 Equinox EV starts at $33,600, according to Chevrolet's website. It has a 319-mile range and touts itself as 'America's most affordable 315+ mile range EV.' The Chevrolet Blazer, another EV option from the American manufacturer, is one of this year's top-selling EVs. At Camino Real Chevrolet in Monterey Park, electric vehicles make up about 20% of sales, according to dealership President Robb Hernandez. Edmunds rated the Equinox EV a 7.5 out of 10 for performance, 8.5 out of 10 for comfort and a 10 out of 10 for range and efficiency. The car has more than 15 safety and driver assistance features. The 2025 Prius Plug-in Hybrid is priced at $33,375 and has 44 miles of battery power. After that, the car switches to gasoline. The Prius Plug-in Hybrid is a particularly good value for drivers who don't go more than 40 miles in one day and can charge frequently, said analyst Karl Brauer. Drivers without a home charger would have to navigate the public network, which can have long wait times. Imperfect charging infrastructure is a deterrent for some considering the switch to electric, Brauer said. Toyota has revamped its Prius model, which once had a bad reputation for its appearance and low power. The Prius Plug-in has 220 horsepower and can accelerate from zero to 60 mph in less than 7 seconds. Edmunds rated the Prius Plug-in Hybrid an 8.5 out of 10 for performance, 7.5 out of 10 for comfort and a 9.5 out of 10 for fuel economy. The 2025 Niro Plug-in Hybrid has an all-electric range of 33 miles and a starting price of $34,490. It is one of Kia's three plug-in hybrid options, which also include the Sportage and the Sorento. According to Edmunds, the Niro Plug-in Hybrid has impressive fuel economy and stylish interior design, but lacks all-wheel drive. Edmunds rated the model an 8 out of 10 for performance, an 8.5 out of 10 for comfort and a 8.5 out of 10 for technology. Kia debuted its first EV for the commercial market in 2015 with the release of the electric Kia Soul. The price of an EV is a significant barrier to a more complete transition to electric vehicles in the U.S., experts said. The average price of a new electric vehicle in the U.S. is $56,910, according to the latest data from Kelley Blue Book, while the average price of a gas-powered car was $49,740 in late 2024. Dealerships are still waiting to see the full effects of new auto tariffs, which are expected to jack up the price of imported parts. Kelley Blue Book predicted overall vehicle prices could increase as much as $6,000 as a result of the tariffs. The higher price tag on EVs stems from expensive batteries and manufacturing. It can be pricier to insure an EV too — data collected by Insurify shows that EVs cost more than $4,000 to insure per year, 49% more than gas-powered cars. For first time EV owners, it can also cost up to $2,000 to install a home charger. Still, depending on where you live and the type of driving you do, it can be cheaper in the long run to own an EV. The cost of electricity is generally less than filling up at the pump, experts said. Vehicles that burn gasoline or diesel are a major contributor to human-caused climate change, experts said, and transitioning away from fossil fuels is key to a healthy climate. Drivers hoping to reduce their reliance on gas also have the option of a plug-in hybrid, which runs on both gas and electricity. Chinese automaker BYD sells ultra low-priced fully electric models, but they are not available in the U.S. The BYD Seagull starts at less than the equivalent of $8,000. 'There's this perpetual challenge for automakers trying to price EVs competitively, at a compelling price point that average people would go and buy them,' said Brauer, the analyst. If automakers are smart, he said, 'they will keep it under $30,000, because with the loss of the incentive, there's a real psychological benefit to be able to say you're under $30,000.' Ford's answer to cheap Chinese EVs is a $30,000 electric pickup truck the company hopes to launch in 2027. The automaker this week said it will invest nearly $5 billion to build the truck and develop a smaller, lighter battery. Slate Auto, a relatively new American automaker backed by Jeff Bezos, says it's building a basic EV with a starting price between $20,000 and $30,000 before customization. The company originally advertised the vehicle at less than $20,000, but had to backtrack after President Trump eliminated a $7,500 tax credit for new electric vehicles. The incentive expires Sept. 30, and Slate says the vehicles will be available in late 2026. Tesla analyst Dan Ives said he expects several less expensive EV models to drop in the next six months, including Tesla's stripped down Model Y. Tesla has not confirmed the release date or price for the new Model Y. The most affordable EVs already on the market usually don't go as far on a charge as higher-priced ones, Ives said. 'They're still worth buying,' he said. 'They're a very good value.'
