Hyatt's all-inclusive play pushes up its Q2 results

Travel Weekly5 hours ago
Despite broader market challenges, Hyatt Hotels Corp.'s luxury brands and all-inclusive resorts delivered exceptionally strong second-quarter results, the company said.
"RevPAR growth was strongest among our luxury brands, as high-end consumers continue to prioritize travel," Hyatt CEO Mark Hoplamazian told analysts during the company's earnings call on Aug. 7.
More than 70% of the group's portfolio plays in the upper upscale and luxury chain scales, he said.
The company's luxury brands saw RevPAR on individual leisure bookings increase about 6% in the quarter, while net-package RevPAR at all-inclusives, which calculates revenue inclusive of rooms, food and beverage and entertainment, rose 6% in the Americas.
Hyatt said it expected all-inclusives tailwinds to continue. CFO Joan Bottarini said that booking pace for Hyatt's Inclusive Collection in the Americas is up almost 5% for the third quarter, indicating "sustained demand for luxury all-inclusive travel for the remainder of the year."
The strength in high-end all-inclusive follows the recent completion of Hyatt's $2.6 billion acquisition of Playa Hotels & Resorts, with the company working to finalize its sale of Playa's owned real estate portfolio by the end of this year.
Softer business trends
Although Hoplamazian reported softer booking trends in the second quarter compared to Q1, Hyatt posted systemwide RevPAR growth of 1.6% in Q2. U.S. RevPAR for the quarter was essentially flat, down 0.1%.
Second-quarter leisure transient RevPAR was up 2.6% globally.
Business transient RevPAR was flat overall, but it declined 1.5% in the U.S., primarily due to weakness at select-service hotels.
Global group RevPAR in the quarter was up 0.3%, with group pace for full-service managed properties in the U.S. approximately flat compared to 2024 for the last half of the year.
Hyatt reaffirmed its full-year outlook of 1% to 3% RevPAR growth for 2025, with Hoplamazian expressing optimism about the near-term future.
"We're seeing an uptick in future bookings for both leisure and business transient travel," he said. "Our group and corporate customers have shared that travel continues to be a priority, especially for customer-facing meetings, and we expect U.S. RevPAR growth to improve after Labor Day."
Hyatt reported a second-quarter net loss of $3 million, compared to net income of $359 million in the prior year. Adjusted Ebitda was $303 million, marking a decline of 1.1% on the same quarter last year.

GM-Hyundai partnership yields five new vehicles

This story was originally published on Automotive Dive. To receive daily news and insights, subscribe to our free daily Automotive Dive newsletter. General Motors and Hyundai Motor will co-develop five vehicles in the Americas as part of a partnership that began last September. The automakers will make four automobiles for the South and Central American markets, including a compact SUV, a car and midsize pickup truck. They will also develop an electric commercial van for North America. Switch Auto Insurance and Save Today! Great Rates and Award-Winning Service The Insurance Savings You Expect Affordable Auto Insurance, Customized for You The vehicles for Latin American markets are set to launch in 2028, and the electric van will be manufactured in the U.S. as early as 2028, the companies said in a joint statement. GM and Hyundai expect to sell more than 800,000 of the new vehicles each year once production is fully scaled, they say in a news release issued after the U.S. stock markets closed on Wednesday. 'Hyundai's strategic collaboration with GM will help us continue to deliver value and choice to our customers across multiple vehicle segments and markets,' José Muñoz, president and CEO of Hyundai Motor Company, says in the release. 'Our combined scale in North and South America helps us to more efficiently provide our customers more of what they want – beautifully designed, high-quality, safety-focused vehicles with technology they appreciate.' 'By partnering together, GM and Hyundai will bring more choice to our customers faster, and at lower cost,' says Shilpan Amin, GM senior vice president and global chief procurement and supply chain officer. 'These first co-developed vehicles clearly demonstrate how GM and Hyundai will leverage our complementary strengths and combined scale.' GM will lead the development of the midsize truck, while Hyundai will oversee the compact car and electric van. The partnership between the two companies involves GM and Hyundai developing new-energy projects and investments together ranging from new vehicles, joint production, powertrain and platform production, as well as emerging battery- and hydrogen-power mobility and distribution, investments in raw materials and more. The electric commercial van will be a rare foray for Hyundai into the North American commercial-vehicles market. While the Korean automaker is a major commercial player in many global markets, in North America the Detroit Three are dominant, although Hyundai has its sights set on trying to break through with alternative-powertrain vehicles. Among the Detroit Three, Ford has the most market share in the U.S. commercial sector and both it and GM currently retail electric commercial vans, as does electric startup Rivian. But the segment hasn't been bountiful for any player, in particular for GM, whose BrightDrop van has been beleaguered by high supply and low demand, causing the automaker to take lengthy pauses in its production, as well as go from two shifts down to one at GM's Ingersoll, ON, Canada, plant assembling the van. GM also last year began allowing its Chevrolet brand dealers to sell the BrightDrop to expand its reach to a wider audience and improve service access for owners needing repairs or tools. Britons booking 'later, closer, shorter' UK breaks

UK holidaymakers are leaving it later to book shorter stays closer to home, travel firms are reporting. The trend is down to people trying to save money while making the most of hot weather, some of the UK's biggest holiday companies have told the BBC. says the number of people searching their site in July for a UK trip in the next six weeks was up 28% on last year, while AirBnB says more Brits are "embracing spontaneous getaways close to home". which advertises around 3,000 UK campsites, says a quarter of this year's bookings were made with just two days notice. Sykes Holiday Cottages, with 23,000 properties across the UK, say their the gap between booking and travel has fallen by 8% this year. Airbnb added "all signs point to a summer where guests are again choosing quieter, affordable places". 'The whole industry's seeing it' At Butlin's holiday park in Skegness people are making reservations slightly later than in previous years - with bookings up 22% in the last two weeks. "I think the whole industry is seeing it," resort director Andrew Leivers says. "The last couple of weeks we've seen a real surge," he adds. "We've got three, four and seven-night breaks... for different people's budgets." Among the 80,000 holidaymakers who will visit the resort this summer is the Harmston family from Lincoln. Mum Kirsty says: "We only booked it about two weeks before we came. We always try and get a last minute deal. We'd saved the money so we knew what our budget was and tried to grab a bargain." She says booking an all-inclusive stay in the UK meant she could keep costs down. "The worst thing of going on holiday is everything else is added on top so you've planned your holiday you look at the price you've paid and you've got to pay extra and extra." Kayleigh Fry is at Butlin's for four nights with her sister-in-law Kelly Towers and her children Casey and Corey and their cousin Marley. Kelly says short breaks can be more convenient for families. "It's easier. You can take a lot more with you when you stay in this country. There are so many pretty places out there in the UK." Nigel Dutton is the owner of Manor Wood Country Caravan Park. He's noticed people are booking later to take advantage of good weather in the UK. "Short breaks seem to be the name of the game at the moment," he says. "People can pre-pay, it's all budgeted, so they know exactly what it's going to cost them. I think we are seeing a revival of camping. It's a nice way to get outdoors, get away from the stress without spending too much." That's exactly what Chelsea and Adam Mahony from Manchester did. They booked an impromptu camping trip with their boys Gray and Rex. "We decided last week that we couldn't afford to go abroad this year so we bought a cheap tent online and thought let's just try something closer to home," says Chelsea. "They've got some fresh air and room to run around. It doesn't feel like home which is the main thing really." Andy and Kate Davis from Dudley camp regularly with their children Sam and Poppy. "It's a cheaper holiday than going abroad and we still get a break with the kids," says Andy. This year they've upgraded their kit. "I've bought a new carpet and a new vacuum as well," he says. They're not alone - sports store Decathlon has told the BBC that the number of family tents sold has gone up 60% compared with last year, while GO Outdoors has seen camping equipment sales jump 20%. Both retailers say growing numbers of their customers are upgrading their camping kit likes the Davis family to include luxuries like mattresses, carpets and furniture. Their family camping trip gets a big thumbs-up from six-year-old Poppy: "I just really like coming with my friends and family. I just really like sleeping in a tent, even though my dad really wants a caravan." How we saved hundreds of pounds on our summer holiday Holidays to Spain, Cyprus and Turkey soar in price
