Shrewsbury woodland fire thought to be caused by disposable barbecue
She said the cottage closest to the site of the fire was about 150 yards (137m) away, and believed that the outcome could have been worse if not for the speed of the fire service."We'd have been burnt to death potentially, we are surrounded by the woods so it would've gone from one bit of woodland to the next and into our houses."
"Not everyone that comes here is aware of the fire hazard," she told the BBC."There's a lot of conifers and a lot of deadwood in the woodland, and although it's a fairly remote area, we get a lot of visitors because it's a country park."We haven't had a lot of fires… maybe five in the 30 years we've been here, but this is the most serious and the most irresponsible, really."
Shropshire Fire and Rescue said that if the public used a portable barbecue, they needed to make sure it was in a safe place, away from flammables, such as dry grass or woodlands.It urged people to never leave barbecues unattended and to make sure they are completely extinguished by submerging the coals in cold water.Ms Jones said she did not think people thought ahead."I think they just think about what they want to do, and then they think that they've left it and it's dead," she said.""If you absolutely have to use one… take it home with you and make sure it's safely disposed of, don't leave it in the countryside."

Blackpool: Person 250m out to sea rescued by lifeboat crew
A person "in distress" about 820ft (250m) from the shore has been rescued from the sea by a lifeboat Blackpool said it received a report of concern for a person's safety in the water opposite the Viking Hotel on South Promenade, Blackpool, shortly after 05:30 BST. The lifeboat charity said it was the fifth call out this week but the "most serious".The volunteer crews gave the casualty immediate care before handing them to the care of the North West Ambulance Service (NWAS) when they returned to shore. The RNLI said it had a report of a second person possibly in the sea in a similar location and a second lifeboat was launched. But the alert was a false alarm. Fire at Iran's Abadan refinery contained, one dead
DUBAI, July 19 (Reuters) - A fire broke out on Saturday at a unit of Iran's Abadan refinery, killing one employee, before being brought under control, the Iranian oil ministry's news agency reported. It said operations were unaffected. "According to initial technical probes, the cause of the fire was a leak in one of the pumps in Unit 70, and no evidence of sabotage or human intervention has been observed so far," SHANA said. Several workers suffered burns, and as many as three were in serious condition, Abadan governor Khosrow Pirhadi told state TV, adding that worn-out parts at the refinery may have caused the incident. Local news agencies carried videos showing large flames and plumes of dark smoke rising from part of the refinery, Iran's oldest crude processing facility. Abadan is in the southwestern Khuzestan province, currently among the hottest places in the world with temperatures close to 50 degrees Celsius (122 Fahrenheit). The refinery, like almost all Iranian oil and gas processing plants, needs major works and renovation after decades of international sanctions.

Scunthorpe woman's mum is her Guiding inspiration
A volunteer has told of the inspiration that has driven her to achieve a top Girlguiding Collingwood is to receive the Queen's Guide award – the highest in Girlguiding – and she says it was the memory of her late mother Hazel which spurred her who died from cancer in 2018, was a Guide leader and helper in Winterton, near 27, said: "It was a huge challenge [but] thinking of her really helped me to keep going on the harder days." Chantal was signed up to join the Guides when she was 10, and her mother had passed on a love of adventure."At my mum's funeral, my childhood leader gave me a Queen's Guide record book and said how much my mum would love me to complete it," she said."It was a very thoughtful gesture and it really made me feel connected to mum while I completed the award."The mental health nurse, from Scunthorpe, dedicated hundreds of hours over two and a half years to achieve the part of the process, she got her camp licence and took about 30 girls away on residential who has been an assistant leader at 1st Broughton Guides for the past seven years, said: "I'm sure my mum would be proud of me for completing my Queen's Guide award."She added: "Just like my mum, I'm keen to do the same for girls now that I'm older and I want to make sure that they get the opportunities to try things that they might not otherwise get to do."Chantal will join hundreds of fellow award winners in October at the Girlguiding Celebrates event in Manchester."[My mum] will be in my thoughts so much that day and hopefully I will be making her proud," she said.
