Small kit plane crashes into California homes, killing two people and a dog

Daily Mail04-05-2025

A homemade kit plane crashed into two homes in Simi Valley on Saturday, killing the pilot, a passenger, and a dog onboard the aircraft, police confirmed.
The crash, involving a single-engine Vans RV-10 aircraft, occurred around 2pm in the 200 block of High Meadow Street in the Wood Ranch area, about 50 miles northwest of Los Angeles.
The home-built plane had departed from William J Fox Airfield in Lancaster and was headed to Camarillo Airport when it crashed.
The FAA initially reported only the pilot was onboard, but police later confirmed that two people died, along with the dog.
The victims' identities have not been released.
Witnesses said the plane was circling above the neighborhood and appeared to be 'flying on its side' before crashing into two properties.
'There was another two minutes of this thing flying around... it was wobbling and barely made it over the hill,' one witness told ABC7.
The second home involved in the crash sustained less damage, though both properties were affected by fire.
The Ventura County Fire Department confirmed the residents inside both homes evacuated without injury.
One homeowner, Arman Hovakemian, described the terrifying moment the plane crashed into his and his wife Armineh's dining room.
He said he was doing yard work when he noticed the plane above, circling lower and lower in the hillside neighborhood.
'I came into the patio door to warn her, and then I heard the bang, then I turned around, she was almost out,' Hovakemian said.
His family's Ring camera captured an explosion and flames from the back of their home.
Hovakemian told ABC7 that he quickly grabbed a hose to try to extinguish the flames.
'I saw the fire on the plane, and then I saw the fire on the house. I kept the hose on the plane, and then it just exploded,' he said.
'I needed to back away because I could smell a lot of gas and fuel.'
Firefighters had to cut through the Hovakemian's roof to access the flames, noting extensive damage to the back of the Wood Ranch community home.
Authorities scanned the scene for a risk of hazardous materials which could cause further damage to the already chaotic scene, however, Andrew Dowd of the Ventura County Sheriff's Department, determined there was no threat.
'There's no apparent jet fuel. When firefighters arrive on scene for something like this, one of the things they want to try to determine is, do we have potential for a hazardous materials incident, significant fuel spill, something like that,' Dowd said.
'With this type of small, fixed-wing, single-engine aircraft, the determination was made that we didn't have a significant hazardous materials risk.'
About 40 firefighters responded to the crash, and local police closed streets around the area.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has since launched an investigation into the cause of the crash, reviewing flight records, maintenance logs, weather conditions, and air traffic communications.
'When you have visibility like it is today, it's always a concern. I don't know... it's way, way too early in this investigation for any of that to be factored in,' a law enforcement officer said at the scene.
NTSB spokesperson Peter Knudson said once the wreckage of the plane is documented, it will be moved to a secure facility for further evaluation.
As part of the ongoing FAA and NTSB investigation, the Hovakemians' home has been red-taped, meaning they won't be allowed back inside anytime soon.

Woke reporter denies there are riots and looting in LA while chaos unfolds behind him

A local TV reporter in Los Angeles questioned whether the city's violent unrest qualified as rioting - even as a fire burned behind him live on the air. ABC7 reporter Tim Caputo insisted that the 'vast majority' of protestors involved in the demonstrations were 'people taking videos [and] people waving flags' during his one-the-ground report. He made the remarks as black smoke billowed into the air behind him and a loud explosion could be heard in the distance. During the segment, ABC7 anchor Jory Rand asked whether those responsible for torching five vehicles were 'a group that splintered off,' 'mak[ing] it look like it's a lot worse than the situation actually playing out on the ground.' 'That's the quintessential question when you have rallies, demonstrations, riots, if you will,' Caputo replied. 'I wouldn't go as far to call it that. I know president Trump had tweeted about riots and looting - I don't know that I would characterize it that way.' As the broadcast showed aerial images of cars on fire, Caputo directed his cameraman away from rising smoke. 'From what we've seen... the vast majority are people taking videos, people waving flags, people walking around, people wanting to be part of the cause, wanting to have their voices heard, and wanting to show the power of numbers and the power of force,' the reporter said. Caputo went on to say that the majority of protestors were 'people walking around, people wanting to be part of the cause, wanting to have their voices heard, and wanting to show the power of numbers and the power of force' The clip was quickly re-shared on social media, earning swift criticism from viewers. 'If you take out the really violent stuff it's relatively peaceful,' one X user joked. 'He thinks we have no eyes to see,' another chimed. 'Is this AI,' a third quipped. The chaos was triggered Friday by immigration raids that resulted in dozens of arrests of what authorities say are illegal migrants and gang members. Police ordered the public to disperse from downtown overnight after an intense day of demonstrations in the region. Around 300 National Guard troops were deployed to the region, spurring anger and fear among many residents. By noon local time on Sunday, hundreds had gathered outside the Metropolitan Detention Center in downtown Los Angeles, where Caputo was reporting. Protesters there approached members of the federal agency and were fired upon with control munitions. Lol @ABC7TimCaputo is like Trump calls it rioting but I wouldn't call it that, just a few cars on fire and explosions, the 'vast majority' of protesters are just taking pictures lololol what!?! — ¡El SooperMexican! ن c137 🦬 (@SooperMexican) June 9, 2025 The group then moved to block traffic on the 101 freeway. The 300 guards called to the crisis have were seen using tear gas, rubber bullets, and flash bangs to control the crowds. President Trump has said the National Guard was necessary because Gov. Gavin Newsom and other Democrats have failed to quell recent protests targeting immigration agents. House Speaker Mike Johnson, a staunch Trump ally, endorsed the president's move, doubling down Trump's recent criticisms of California democrats and their cooperation with his orders. Former Vice President Kamala Harris, who lives in Los Angeles, said the immigration arrests and Guard deployment were designed as part of a 'cruel, calculated agenda to spread panic and division.'

'Parcels kept disappearing from my doorstep but camera exposed the culprit'

More info Delivery companies sometimes make the decision to leave parcels on your front doorstep, leaving them exposed to the elements or the thieving hands of passers-by. But what would you do if you realised the people nicking your parcels were actually your new next-door neighbours? That's exactly what happened to one bloke, who moved into a flat complex with his girlfriend. They'd arranged a bed frame to be delivered to coincide with the day they were moving in, so they'd have somewhere to kip. "As we arrived, we shortly realised that the three packages were not where they had been left in the delivery picture and were nowhere to be found," he explained, leaving the pair of them baffled and rather distressed as the bed frame had set them back $900 (£667). He continued by saying that he "also noticed there were two separate drop-off locations between the two boxes". He added: "While two of the bigger boxes were left at the bottom of the stairwell (we live on the third floor), the last package was left at our doorstep. "I thought it was a bit strange that a 100 lb package was nicked directly off my doorstep and down two flights of stairs, so I had a small feeling it was one of our neighbours that we hadn't met". The anonymous man then shared that they managed to get another one shipped out, so they "left it at that," not wanting to cause a scene over something they had no evidence of. However, after another package was stolen from his doorstep shortly after delivery, he decided to install a Ring doorbell. Sharing his tale on Reddit, he told how a few weeks later, an alert showed him footage of his neighbour's child swiping a parcel from his welcome mat. Feeling utterly dismayed, he didn't hold back, confronting the situation head-on. He recounted: "So I used the talk feature and told them to return my package NOW and she said he didn't touch it. "She finally put the package back at the step and while she was going into her unit I heard her say on the camera now we have to throw away the... then it cut out." His frustration escalated as he revealed: "Right after they called us a**holes and went inside. While typing this I just saw them take a huge storage bucket full of random objects and throw them away. So they are definitely huge porch pirates!" Reddit users were incensed, quickly offering advice in the comment section. A user suggested: "Report them to management and the police. They are thieves." While another expressed sympathy and encouraged immediate action, saying: "What a horrible way to begin your life in that place. Please do take care of it asap. The longer you wait, the more they question. Like: well, why did they wait? Let us know what happens. Like who the f**k do these people think they are!" Another person fumed: "Oh hell no. Definitely report to the landlord in addition to the cops and start documenting and sharing anything you can to speed along an eviction so that you can live in peace. "Hell, I'd even take down the Ring so they think you're no longer recording, but put a hidden blink camera instead and have lots of small packages mailed of cheap things for additional evidence against them if the landlord doesn't handle it with the police reports and current video. "£1,000 isn't petty theft and deserves worse than petty revenge".
