Bus falls into gorge in Himachal Pradesh's Mandi; 8 dead, 21 injured
The accident occurred at a sharp bend near Maseran, 160km from Shimla, around 9.45am. According to eyewitnesses, the driver had edged slightly off the road, and the retaining wall gave way, plunging the bus into a 50ft-deep gorge.
Locals immediately clambered down the steep slopes and began a rescue effort. They helped bring the injured out of the bus after calling medical and emergency services. The injured were first taken to Sarkaghat govt hospital, 85km away, from where those in serious condition were referred to AIIMS-Bilaspur and GMCH, Nerchowk, in Mandi district.
According to a police officer, five people died on the spot, three others succumbed in hospital. The deceased, which included four women, were identified as Geeta Devi, 65, Doma Devi, 70, Klasi Devi, 60, Barfi Devi, 80, Antariksh, 17, Balbir, 60, and Suman Kumar, 33. All the victims were residents of Sarkaghat sub-division in Mandi district. Prakash Chand, 70, who was referred to AIIMS Bilaspur, also succumbed.
Local MLA Dilip Thakur, who met the injured, said that the govt must improve the infrastructure at Sarkaghat govt hospital, which doesn't have "requisite ambulances or ultrasound machines".

Deputy chief minister Mukesh Agnihotri also visited Sarkaghat and met the injured at the hospital. Expressing grief over the bus accident, chief minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu directed the Mandi district administration to provide ex gratia to the next of kin of the deceased and the best treatment to the injured.
Agnihotri said a judicial probe had been ordered into the accident. Agnihotri, who met the injured and inspected the accident site, said a technical team from the transport department is working to determine the cause of the accident.
The government has announced immediate relief assistance of Rs 25,000 each for the families of the deceased and Rs 5,000 each for the injured.

H'bag man builds temple in wife's memory
Hazaribag: A man from Khambhwa village of Tatijharia in Hazaribag district is constructing a temple in memory of his late wife Satyabhama Devi, who died in 2023. Talking about his wife, the man identified as Bhola Sharma, a 65-year-old retired teacher, said, "A woman considers her husband as God and so the husband should also see and treat her in the same manner. Hence, it is my duty and responsibility to keep her memory alive by building a temple." Sharma also said he has spent over Rs 10 lakh of his retirement money on the construction of the structure. The retired teacher also said the temple would not have any statue of his wife. "My wife was a devotee of 'Gram Devi', or the local deity revered as the local guardian of the area. We will put an idol of the 'Gram Devi'. My wife used to talk about constructing a Gram Devi temple in the village, but she died with her dream unfulfilled. Now, this temple in her memory will be a fulfilment of her desire," he said, adding that the temple will have a plaque containing her name.

₹93.5 crore flood work set to begin along Madurai's Panthalkudi Channel
Madurai: To mitigate flooding during the monsoon, the water resources department (WRD) is set to launch ₹93.5 crore worth of flood control work along the Panthalkudi Channel and surrounding areas. The project includes constructing reinforced cement concrete (RCC) retaining walls on both sides of the canal and upgrading existing culverts to improve water flow and prevent breaches during heavy rainfall. WRD officials said tenders will be floated this week, and a government order is expected soon. Of the total cost, ₹63.5 crore has been earmarked for the retaining walls along Panthalkudi, and ₹6.9 crore for revamping six existing culverts. Additional flood protection measures are also planned for Eachan Oadai near Mattuthavani and low-lying areas in Uthangudi, which were flooded during last year's rains. The Panthalkudi channel, which carries overflow from the Sellur tank to the Vaigai, is one of the city's oldest and most vital water channels. However, unchecked sewage discharge and garbage dumping have turned it into an open drain.
