CaratLane pilots own quick commerce; No plans for lab-grown diamonds
Bengaluru: Omnichannel jewellery retailer CaratLane is rolling out its own quick commerce initiative, commencing with pilots in Gurgaon and slated for Hyderabad and Bangalore, a senior official of the company said. Talking to ETRetail, Saumen Bhaumik, MD, CaratLane, emphasised the push for accelerated delivery times, targeting four to six hours in high-density PIN codes. "Quick commerce has proved many theories wrong, so we are trying to make sure the delivery process is shorter and faster with our own bandwidth and infrastructure," he stated. The development comes as retailers across categories are actively partnering with quick commerce platforms. Recently, Kalyan Jewellers joined hands with Swiggy's quick commerce platform - Instamart. CaratLane, which reported a 24 per cent jump in its topline in FY25, has been diversifying its product range. Bhaumik shared that beyond 18-carat and 14-carat offerings, the company has launched a 9-carat jewellery range. When asked if the brand plans to enter the growing lab-grown diamonds segment, Bhaumik reiterated CaratLane's stance. "No, CaratLane is not going to get into LGD. That's very clear. We are going to play in natural diamonds only." He further commented, "At the falling rate of LGDs, making money would be very difficult for anybody who is venturing into it." Additionally, Bhaumik highlighted the strong trend towards premiumisation in jewellery . He noted that the Rs 50,000 and above segment is growing the fastest. The increasing popularity of solitaires, particularly in the mini solitaire category (20-70 cents), is also driving this trend, attracting many first-time diamond buyers, he added. The Tata Group-owned jeweller retailer opened 50 stores last year and this fiscal is eyeing over 40 new stores. While online sales account for roughly 10 per cent of direct revenue, digital influence extends to 70-80 per cent of customer journeys, with many customers researching designs online before visiting a physical store, Bhaumik explained when asked about the revenue contribution of offline and online channels.

Women's ODI World Cup: Delay In Forming LOC Raises Concern Within BCCI
Last Updated: The Women's ODI World Cup is nearing, but the BCCI hasn't formed the local organizing committee. The tournament runs from Sept 30 to Nov 2 across five venues, including Colombo. The Women's ODI World Cup is imminent, and yet the host Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has yet to establish the local organising committee (LOC) responsible for the smooth operation of the ICC event. The LOC's formation was tabled during the BCCI Apex Council meeting in March, but a decision was deferred. Earlier this month, the ICC announced a partial schedule for the tournament, which will be played across five venues from September 30 to November 2. Colombo will serve as the neutral venue for matches involving Pakistan, as per the hybrid model agreed upon by the BCCI, PCB, and ICC for all ICC events until 2027. The BCCI's senior officials were occupied with the Indian Premier League (IPL) until 3 June, and with the Apex Council expected to meet soon, the LOC may finally be formed. 'There is no deadline per se to form the LOC but it is always better if these things are done well in advance. In countries like England and Australia, you would normally see the LOC in place a year before the event and even the schedule is out well in advance so that the fans can plan," a BCCI source was quoted as saying to PTI. 'As far as the conduct of the tournament goes, the LOC is the main body responsible for sorting out the logistics for the participating teams. Needless to say, it has a massive role to play," the source added. India will host a women's ICC event for the first time since 2016, when it last staged the T20 World Cup alongside the men's tournament. It is worth noting that there was a considerable delay in announcing the schedule for the 2023 Men's ODI World Cup hosted by India, which was finalised at the last minute owing to logistical challenges. The four Indian venues for the Women's ODI World Cup are Bengaluru, Guwahati, Vizag, and Indore. The last 50-over women's World Cup was held in India in 2013. Despite the recent equal pay initiative by the BCCI and the resources at its disposal over the past decade, the women's team is yet to win an ICC trophy. First Published: June 11, 2025, 18:36 IST
