Rupee slips 29 paisa amid import pressure

After a brief pause, the Pakistani rupee continued its decline against the US dollar on Wednesday, falling by 0.10% in the inter-bank market amid increasing import payments, profit repatriation by multinational companies, and a cautious sentiment ahead of upcoming external debt repayments.
The currency closed at 284.96, marking a depreciation of 29 paisa from Tuesday's closing rate of 284.67.
This resumption of the downward trajectory follows a marginal appreciation of the rupee against the US dollar on Tuesday, when it gained 0.02%. By the end of the trading session, the rupee had closed at 284.67, up by five paisa from the previous day's close at 284.72.
"The Pakistani rupee weakness stems from persistent demand for the dollar amid rising import payments, profit repatriation by multinationals, and cautious sentiment ahead of upcoming external debt repayments," said Arif Habib Ltd Deputy Head of Trading Ali Najib.
In addition, the SBP is also consistently buying the US dollar from the market, taking its intervention to over $6 billion in 8MFY25, a deliberate strategy to rebuild forex reserves, driven by strong remittances, IMF funding, and debt rollover considerations, he added.
Despite improving forex reserves, speculative activity and global dollar strength continue to weigh on the rupee, he said. Without stronger inflows or policy tightening, the currency is likely to face further mild depreciation in the short term.
Globally, the US dollar strengthened on Wednesday alongside rising Treasury yields. The uptick followed fresh US inflation data, which suggested that President Donald Trump's renewed tariff measures may be beginning to filter into consumer prices, further pressuring currencies like the Japanese yen.
Gold prices in Pakistan declined on Wednesday, in contrast to the international market, where bullion rose on the back of escalating tensions in the Middle East, tariff uncertainty, and weaker US producer price data.
According to the All Pakistan Sarafa Gems and Jewellers Association, the price of gold fell by Rs3,000 per tola, settling at Rs356,000. Similarly, the rate for 10 grams dropped by Rs2,572 to Rs305,212.
This follows Tuesday's decline of Rs700 per tola, when the price had closed at Rs359,000.
Interactive Commodities Director Adnan Agar said the recent resurgence in global prices was tied to the revival of tariff concerns linked to Trump's trade stance. "The Trump tariff issue has resurfaced. Because of that, the market is likely to remain in this range."
Agar identified strong support at $3,300, suggesting the market could range between $3,380 and $3,420 in the near term unless fresh developments alter the outlook.
Globally, spot gold rose 0.2% to $3,328.14 per ounce, as of 0937 am EDT (1337 GMT). US gold futures edged 0.1% lower to $3,333.60, according to Reuters.

Trump sues WSJ, Rupert Murdoch for defamation over Epstein report

Listen to article US President Donald Trump sued the Wall Street Journal and its owners including Rupert Murdoch for at least $10 billion on Friday, over the newspaper's report that his name was on a 2003 birthday greeting for Jeffrey Epstein that included a sexually suggestive drawing and a reference to secrets they shared. The lawsuit filed in Miami federal court names Murdoch, Dow Jones, News Corp and its Chief Executive Robert Thomson, and two Wall Street Journal reporters as defendants, saying they defamed Trump and caused him to suffer "overwhelming" financial and reputational harm. Epstein, the disgraced financier and sex offender, died by suicide in a New York jail cell in 2019. His case has generated conspiracy theories that became popular among Trump's base of supporters who believed the government was covering up Epstein's ties to the rich and powerful. Also Read: Trump says up to five jets downed in Pakistan-India clash Trump has said he parted ways with Epstein before the financier's legal troubles became public in 2006. The president has vehemently denied the Journal report, which Reuters has not verified, and had warned Murdoch that he planned to sue. Dow Jones, the parent of the newspaper, is a division of News Corp. "We have just filed a POWERHOUSE Lawsuit against everyone involved in publishing the false, malicious, defamatory, FAKE NEWS 'article' in the useless 'rag' that is, The Wall Street Journal," Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform. "I hope Rupert and his 'friends' are looking forward to the many hours of depositions and testimonies they will have to provide in this case," Trump added. A spokesperson for Dow Jones said in a statement: "We have full confidence in the rigor and accuracy of our reporting, and will vigorously defend against any lawsuit." The lawsuit called Trump's alleged birthday greeting "fake," and said the Journal published its article to harm Trump's reputation. 'Tellingly, the Article does not explain whether Defendants have obtained a copy of the letter, have seen it, have had it described to them, or any other circumstances that would otherwise lend credibility to the Article,' the lawsuit said. Read: US distances itself from Israeli attacks on Syria To prevail on his defamation claims, Trump must show the defendants acted with "actual malice," meaning they knew the article was false or acted with reckless disregard for its truth. A $10 billion award would far exceed the largest defamation judgments and settlements in recent history. These include a $1.5 billion judgment against conspiracy theorist Alex Jones, and Fox News' settlement with Dominion Voting Systems for $787.5 million. "Ten billion dollars is a ridiculously high number," said Jesse Gessin, a lawyer with experience in defamation and First Amendment litigation. "It would be the largest defamation verdict in US history." While House roiled The Epstein affair has increasingly disquieted the White House, after the Justice Department this month concluded that there was no evidence to support long-held conspiracy theories about his clients and death. Some of Trump's most loyal followers became furious after his administration reversed course on its promise to release files on Epstein. A Justice Department memo released on July 7 concluded that Epstein killed himself and said there was "no incriminating client list" or evidence that Epstein blackmailed prominent people. With pressure to release the Epstein files building, Trump on Thursday said he directed Attorney General Pam Bondi to ask a court to release grand jury testimony about Epstein. The US government on Friday filed a motion in Manhattan federal court to unseal grand jury transcripts in the cases of Epstein and former associate Ghislaine Maxwell. She was convicted in 2021 of five federal charges related to her role in Epstein's sexual abuse of underage girls. Maxwell is appealing her conviction and 20-year prison sentence to the US Supreme Court. "Public officials, lawmakers, pundits, and ordinary citizens remain deeply interested and concerned about the Epstein matter," Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche said in the filing. "After all, Jeffrey Epstein is the most infamous pedophile in American history." Also Read: At least 41 killed in Israeli strikes today Blanche said prosecutors would work to redact all victim-identifying information before making anything public. The release of the grand jury documents may fall short of what many of Trump's supporters have sought, including case files held by the administration, and a judge may reject the administration's request to make the transcripts public. Bawdy letter The Journal said the letter bearing Trump's name was part of a leather-bound birthday book for Epstein that included messages from other high-profile people. It also said the letter contained several lines of typewritten text framed by the outline of a naked woman, which appeared to be hand-drawn with a heavy marker. The newspaper said the letter concluded "Happy Birthday - and may every day be another wonderful secret," and featured the signature "Donald." Allegations that Epstein sexually abused girls became public in 2006, after the birthday book was allegedly produced, and he was arrested that year before accepting a plea deal. Epstein died just over a month after he was arrested for a second time and charged with sex-trafficking conspiracy. Trump was photographed with Epstein multiple times in social situations in the 1990s and early 2000s, and had been a neighbor of Epstein's in Florida. Read: Israel, Syria agree to ceasefire after deadly clashes in Druze region He was quoted in 2002 in New York magazine as saying, "I've known Jeff for 15 years. Terrific guy. He's a lot of fun to be with. It is even said that he likes beautiful women as much as I do, and many of them are on the younger side." In 2019, Trump told reporters that he and Epstein had a "falling out" before the financier was first arrested. Trump said he "knew him like everybody in Palm Beach knew him" but that "I had a falling out with him. I haven't spoken to him in 15 years. I was not a fan of his, that I can tell you." Govt plans to establish Rs3bn aquaculture park in Karachi

Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry announced the establishment of a state-of-the-art aquaculture park at Korangi Fish Harbour in Karachi, at an estimated cost of Rs3 billion. The minister made this announcement presiding a high-level meeting on the development of blue economy. The meeting was attended by Gwadar Port Authority (GPA) Chairman Noorul Haq Baloch, representatives from Korangi Fish Harbour Authority (KoFHA), the Marine Fisheries Department (MFD), and the Balochistan Chamber of Commerce and Industry. The 120-acre aquaculture park is estimated to produce 360 to 1,200 tons of seafood annually, depending on the species cultivated and the farming system employed. Its annual revenue is projected to be between $720,000 and $7.2 million, influenced by species selection, market prices, and production intensity, the Ministry of Maritime Affairs said in a press release. The World Bank defines the blue economy as the sustainable use of ocean resources for economic growth, improved livelihoods, and job creation, while ensuring the health of the ocean ecosystem. Minister Junaid said the project, covering 120 acres, should be developed under a public-private partnership framework, aiming to boost the country's blue economy through sustainable aquaculture. The meeting was informed that the land cost for the aquaculture park has been set according to an extensive farming model, offering an affordable and efficient foundation for private investors. Starting fish farming scheme in Sindh with World Bank support: Najmi Alam Experts informed the meeting that Pakistan's coastal waters possess highly conducive conditions for aquaculture, providing an ideal environment for farming a variety of marine species. To accelerate the process, the federal minister directed the KoFHA to submit a comprehensive execution report within 10 days. Emphasising replication of success, he proposed extending the aquaculture model to Balochistan, leveraging its vast coastal belt for sustainable marine farming. While, in a move aimed at enhancing coordination, Junaid ordered the relocation of Marine Fisheries Department sub office to the premises of the Gwadar Port Authority. This administrative shift is expected to streamline inter-agency collaboration and expedite decision-making in blue economy initiatives. In a separate meeting, the federal minister also reviewed the progress on the land allotment and lease policy of the Port Qasim Authority (PQA). Officials informed him that the Survey of Pakistan has been engaged to identify and demarcate PQA-owned land. Furthermore, it was conveyed that the revision of PQA's master plan is being aligned with the broader feasibility study for the National Ports Master Plan, currently underway. Minister Junaid reiterated the government's commitment to promoting sustainable marine development, asserting that investments in aquaculture and port infrastructure are essential for ensuring food security, increasing exports, and generating employment across coastal regions. The series of meetings held by the maritime minister mark a significant step in the government's broader maritime development strategy, focused on harnessing the full potential of Pakistan's coastal resources through innovation, institutional cooperation, and private sector engagement.

Karachi, Lahore hit by strike against ‘anti-business' tax measures

Pakistan's two largest cities - Karachi and Lahore - faced partial and complete market closures over a strike call by traders against what they called 'anti-business' tax measures introduced in the Finance Act 2025. In the Finance Act, the government expanded the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) powers with Sections 37A and 37B, which empower FBR officials with arbitrary arrests; Section 21(S), which imposes harsh penalties on cash transactions of Rs200,000 or more; mandatory digital invoicing under SRO 709; and the imposition of e-Bilty under Section 40(C). July 19 strike call: govt invites trade leaders for talks The business community termed these measures 'anti-business' and announced a nationwide strike on July 19 (today). They also called for the restoration of the Final Tax Regime for exporters. However, the business community later appeared divided, with the Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI) postponing the protest following talks with the government, while the Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) vowing to go ahead with the strike. It is for the first time that a complete strike has been witnessed in Karachi's New Sabzi Mandi. The KCCI spearheaded the strike on Saturday, backed by the Lahore Chamber of Commerce & Industry (LCCI), Hyderabad Chamber of Small Traders & Small Industry (HCSTSI), and others. Meanwhile, Pakistan's capital Islamabad reportedly remained largely affected. United Goods Transport Alliance Patron in Chief Malik Shabbar Khan told Business Recorder that two big transport alliances in the country, including United Goods Transport Alliance and Pakistan Goods Transport Alliance, had supported the KCCI. 'Today we have stopped all bookings, but goods transport takes five days to come to a halt,' Khan said. 'What's more, we will be affected by this black law. Let me give you an example, when a goods truck goes to Karachi from Peshawar and comes back, it has to pay around Rs100,000 in terms of tolls and various challans. We talked to the KCCI leaders that if the demands are not fulfilled, we can go on strike once or twice a week. It will be decided later after meeting with the business community.' Veteran fruits merchant Haji Mehboob Shair said, 'It is for the first time in the history of the country that the complete strike has been witnessed in Sabzi Mandi'. According to Shair, a large number of trucks loaded with fruits and vegetables come to the Sabzi Mandi daily, but they did not come on Saturday. Meanwhile, main markets and commercial areas in Karachi remained closed till filing of this report at 3pm, while small number markets in Clifton, Landhi and other areas remained open in the metropolitan city. Finance Act 2025 tightens tax rules for businesses, filers KCCI president Muhammad Jawed Bilwani briefed the media late Friday night with other business leaders about a meeting with Special Assistant to the Prime Minister (SAPM) on Industries Haroon Akhtar Khan attended by a number of chambers via Zoom. 'Business leaders were given no surety in writing,' he said, announcing the KCCI decision to proceed with the strike. LCCI president Mian Abu Zar Shaad stated that Lahore chamber had decided to join the strike in solidarity with the broader business community. Hyderabad traders also supported the strike call, with commercial areas of the city, including Saddar Bazaar, Resham Bazaar, Anaj Mandi, Market Tower, and others remaining closed during the day. FPCCI postponed the strike - a call that was followed by chambers and associations of Rawalpindi, Sialkot, Gujranwala, Quetta, Khanewal, Multan, Bajaur and others.
