MoD proposes ‘ancient warfare' tableaux theme on R-Day

Hindustan Times2 days ago

New Delhi The defence ministry has suggested 'Ancient Warfare/Military Strategy' as the theme for the tableaux in the 2026 Republic Day parade and formally requested the culture ministry to evaluate the feasibility of incorporating original historical weapons alongside detailed 3D-design sketches of the potential tableau in the display.
A letter from the defence ministry to the culture ministry details its choice, and says the idea came from defence minister Rajnath Singh.
'As discussed, Honble RRM (Raksha Rajya Mantri) suggested that during next year RD parade, a tableau containing military history showcasing original equipments, weapons, etc of popular and legendary personalities like Shivaji Maharaj, Ranapratap, Rani Laxmibai, etc may kindly be displayed in the main parade,' says the letter, which has been reviewed by Hindustan Times.
A culture ministry official said that the defence ministry has selected ancient military strategy as its central theme. 'The defence ministry sends us a proposal every year regarding their choice of theme . This year, they specified the ancient warfare concept and asked for 2-3 preliminary 3D sketches showing potential tableau designs. We aim to submit the formal proposal complete with these sketches later this month. If approved, detailed development will follow,' the official added, asking not to be named. To be sure, the defence ministry usually publicises its theme in November.
Recent themes include 'Swarnim Bharat: Virasat aur Vikas' (Golden India: Heritage and Development) for 2025, 'Viksit Bharat' (Developed India) and 'Bharat-Loktantra ki Matruka' (India – the mother of democracy) for 2024, and Jan Bhagidari (people's participation) for 2023. The defence ministry declined comment on a query regarding confirmation of the 2026 theme.
Interestingly, the Indian Army's 'Project Udbhav' (Origin), launched by Singh in 2023 aims to synthesize ancient Indian strategic wisdom with contemporary military practices, studying texts such as Chanakya's Arthashastra, Kamandaka's Nitisara, and Thiruvalluvar's Thirukkural, alongside historical military successes such as the tactics of the Ahom kingdom against the Mughals and the leadership of Chhatrapati Shivaji and Maharaja Ranjit Singh. Singh said during the launch that the objective is to forge a 'unique, culturally rooted approach to address modern security challenges by revisiting India's rich heritage of military thought.'
It is not clear whether the choice of theme has anything to do with India's success in Operation Sindoor, the Indian military's targetting of terrorist hubs and military facilities in Pakistan and Pakistan occupied Kashmir as a response to the April 22 terror strike carried out by Pakistan-sponsored terrorists in Pahalgam in which 26 people were killed. The culture ministry official declined comment on whether there was a link.
A primary task involves sourcing and safely integrating genuine historical weaponry, the official added. Descendants of families who crafted arms for figures such as Maharana Pratap possess preserved prototypes that could be utilized. 'We maintain access to a repository of such families who still safeguard these historical artefacts. Following approval of the design, we will engage them to provide appropriate pieces matching the final requirements,' the official said.
As the nodal ministry, the defence ministry manages the Republic Day tableau selection. States, union territories, and central ministries submit proposals aligned with the theme. An expert committee evaluates submissions based on criteria including creativity, conceptual clarity, visual impact, and theme adherence through multiple stages. Proposals typically require submission by November, with phased reviews of sketches and 3D models.

Ranchi: The state school education and literacy department has asked all districts to work towards phasing out intermediate education in colleges. It added that Class XII students of these institutes should be enrolled in govt +2 high schools, intermediate colleges, and other approved affiliated colleges. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The department also stated that the enrolment of all students passing class X in 2026 should be in govt, upgraded +2 high schools, intermediate colleges, and other approved colleges. In a letter issued to all deputy commissioners (DC), joint directors of education, and district education officers, the department's secretary Uma Shankar Singh said the order was issued to implement the National Education Policy. "The governor's secretariat has directed that conducting intermediate classes in constituent colleges is against NEP and has instructed for taking necessary steps in this regard," he said. Notably, students who cleared matriculation examinations are jostling for admissions after many constituent colleges in Ranchi have scrapped intermediate courses this year. Singh further said that class XII students should be shifted to schools located within a five-kilometre radius, keeping their convenience in mind, adding that their 100% enrolment must be ensured. "In case of problems, the authorities should contact the Jharkhand Academic Council and tackle them in a time-bound manner. The DC have been directed to supervise the implementation of the order," Singh added. The order came days after chief minister Hemant Soren formed a three-member committee comprising Ministers Ramdas Soren, Sudivya Kumar, and Dipika Pandey to discuss issues related to the enrolment of students and the future of teachers and staff in constituent colleges. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The committee was asked to also meet governor Santosh Gangwar on the issue if needed. Meanwhile, Jharkhand Angibhoot Mahavidyalaya Intermediate Anubandh Sikshak Sangh Secretary Ramanuj Pandey said, "The decision has come when the matter in this regard is pending before Jharkhand High Court. Moreover, the three-member committee has not made any recommendation so far. The decision would create uncertainty in the minds of students for a short period as they would not be sure where they would be enrolled. " Pandey added, "The secretary's letter has not mentioned anything about the absorption of teachers and staff engaged in the intermediate section of constituent colleges."

"We need thorough inquiry": KC Venugopal on Air India plane crash

Thiruvananthapuram (Kerala) [India], June 13 (ANI): Congress leader KC Venugopal on Friday said that the inquiry into the Air India flight plane crash near the Ahmedabad airport should be expedited and that there should be a clear-cut answer to why this accident happened. 'What happened in Ahmedabad yesterday was one of the most shocking incidents. There are no words to explain need a thorough inquiry about that. I think there is an established convention to inquire about flight accidents. I think that should be expedited, there should be clear-cut answer why this accident happened. Only an inquiry can reveal this,' KC Venugopal said. On Thursday, the Air India Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, which was bound for London from Ahmedabad, crashed shortly after takeoff. There were 242 people on board, including 230 passengers and 12 crew members. Among the victims was former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani. Of the passengers, 241 died in the crash. The lone survivor, identified as Vishwashkumar Ramesh, a British national of Indian origin, sustained injuries and is undergoing treatment. The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) on Friday confirmed the recovery of the Digital Flight Data Recorder (DFDR), commonly referred to as the black box, from the rooftop of a building at the site of the Air India Flight AI-171 crash in Ahmedabad. The AAIB has launched a full-scale investigation into the crash, with over 40 staff from the Gujarat State Government joining efforts to support the Ministry of Civil Aviation teams on the ground. The black box, a critical piece of evidence, will be analysed to determine the cause of the tragic crash. Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the Ahmedabad Civil Hospital and met the survivor and other injured people. Aircraft manufacturer Boeing also released a statement on X, saying, 'We are in contact with Air India regarding Flight 171 and stand ready to support them.
