Lokesh Kanagaraj Reveals Why Fahadh Faasil Didn't Join Rajinikanth's Coolie
Rajinikanth's Coolie has been grabbing attention for a long time. Many actors, including Aamir Khan, are part of this action drama. However, in a recent revelation that has taken fans by surprise, director Lokesh Kanagaraj confirmed that acclaimed actor Fahadh Faasil was almost roped in for a key role in Coolie. However, despite initial discussions, the collaboration couldn't materialize.
In a recent conversation with The Hollywood Reporter India, Lokesh revealed that Soubin's character was originally written for Fahadh Faasil, and also approached him. However, due to Fahadh's prior commitments, the collaboration couldn't happen. Lokesh mentioned that he had developed the character over six months before eventually casting Soubin in the role. Although Fahadh couldn't be part of Coolie, he previously worked with Rajinikanth in Vettaiyan.
The action thriller is already being called one of the most anticipated Indian films of 2025. This marks the first-ever collaboration between Rajinikanth and Lokesh, and the cast is packed with big names—Nagarjuna, Upendra, Soubin Shahir, Sathyaraj, and Shruti Haasan all feature, while Bollywood icon Aamir Khan makes a cameo.
As Lokesh wraps up the final stages of post-production, he shared an emotional moment that followed a recent screening of the film with Rajinikanth.
'After watching the film in the dubbing studio, he (Rajinikanth) hugged me and said, 'It looked like Thalapathi for me!' That made my day, and that was the night I slept very peacefully after many months. That is what I was telling my friends, too. If at all, I am doing a film with Rajini sir, it has to be somewhere close to Thalapathi. I cannot write a film on par with Mani sir's quality, as his film and writing is unmatched… But I get a little satisfaction when we compare that film with this one. Listening to the same words from Rajini sir was an achievement," she shared during a chat with The Hollywood Reporter India.
Lokesh said Thalapathi has always been his favourite Rajinikanth film, and he wanted Coolie to carry a similar balance of style and substance. He also spoke about the original idea he had pitched to Rajinikanth before Coolie took shape.

Karan Johar Alarmed After IndiGo Flight Fails To Land In Nagpur: ‘Na Le Koi Flight?'
Last Updated: Karan Johar reacts to an IndiGo flight's failed landing attempt in Nagpur, echoing growing public concern over recent flight scares in India. As flight-related mishaps continue to rattle passengers across the country, filmmaker Karan Johar has joined the growing chorus of concern. The director-producer, known for his candid social media presence, recently reacted to yet another aviation scare involving an IndiGo flight that failed to land on its first attempt due to low visibility. On Saturday morning, an IndiGo flight from Mumbai to Nagpur faced a tense moment as it was unable to touch down at the Nagpur airport during its initial landing approach. Fortunately, after a nerve-wracking 15-minute delay midair, the flight made a successful landing on its second attempt. Lokmat Times Nagpur shared the news on Instagram, prompting Karan Johar to share the post on his Instagram Stories with an exasperated caption that read, 'He Bhagwan!!! Na le koi flight????" — a mix of frustration and anxiety that many flyers seem to be resonating with lately. Karan's reaction comes at a time when Indian skies have been experiencing a spate of worrying aviation incidents. Just days earlier, an Air India Express flight enroute from Hyderabad to Phuket had to turn back due to technical issues shortly after takeoff. On Thursday, an IndiGo aircraft bound for Imphal returned to Delhi following a snag that surfaced after an hour in the air. The week also saw an IndiGo flight from Delhi to Goa making an emergency landing in Mumbai due to a mid-air engine failure. Another IndiGo flight from Delhi to Patna took off again after landing because of an 'unstabilised approach" during touchdown, adding to the growing list of near-miss stories that are leaving passengers nervous and weary. On the work front, Karan Johar is currently gearing up for Dhadak 2, which stars Siddhant Chaturvedi and Triptii Dimri in lead roles. The film is being produced by Dharma Productions in association with Zee Studios and Cloud 9 Pictures, and will be directed by Shazia Iqbal. Karan is also lending his voice to the podcast world with Live Your Best Life with Karan Johar, a new Audible series featuring intimate conversations with guests like Konkona Sen Sharma, Richa Chadha, Ali Fazal, and Zakir Khan.
